Anyone with Profile 1.0/1.1 players chime in at the thread below if your player actually plays the films or not?

For Your Eyes Only had no problem playing on my gen 1 Panny BD-10. It would not play on my gen 1 Samsung BDP1000 with the up-to-date 1.6 FW (loaded through the commentary disclaimer screen, but then spit out the disc as unplayable).

No problems playing on the new Sony S550 or PS3.

I have never had a BD that wouldn't play on the Panny BD10.

As far as DVD players not having problems in the beginning I would disagree. My first gen RCA5200 would choke on at least half of the dual-layer DVD's when they first came out.

No problems playing the 3 Connerys on my Panny BD30 or PS3.

I can't decide if I want to sell my DVD bond sets and start picking these up. It's kind of a bummer that by selling a 5 bond movie set I would be able to afford just 1 blu-ray bond film but after reading all the reviews on how stellar the video quality is I'm really starting to be swayed.

I only have FYEO and I was ecstatic over how great it looked. From what I understand the older ones look even better.

Couldn't get Dr. No and From Russia With Love to work on my firmware updated Sony BDP-S300. They would both get to the menu screen then nothing would work. Since they were both opened and I couldn't return them, I ended up eBaying them and eating about $10. This has basically made me decide that I can't afford to chance it and buy any new Blu titles until I get a 2.0 player, which is disappointing with Dark Knight coming out.

What store did you get them at that wouldn't even allow you to exchange them for different titles?

I have the DMP-BD30. When I bought it it listed for something like $500, but I got it on sale for $400. Now I see you can get it for $258 at Amazon.com. It doesn't have Internet connectivity (BD Live, etc.), but so far none of that stuff matters to me. I just want a player that does a good job of playing the damned discs, which this one does. Outstanding picture quality, reasonably fast load times (second only to the PS3 from what I've read), and it hasn't had a problem with any disc I've put in it, including rentals from Netflix.

Panasonic's two new models, the DMP-BD35 and BD55 look like keepers, too.

I also have the BD30. Having it for almost a year, it's played over 150 discs with 0 problems. Panasonic, imo, is the most consistent manufacturer for BD standalones. I rarely see problem posts with their units. Having said that, I chose the Sony BDP-S550 over the Panasonic DMP-BD55. :) I need a little variety. I think Sony has been pretty consistent as well with their units. Both manufacturers react pretty quickly to playback issues.

I'm sure if I explain the situation and ask for an even swap they'll give it to me. And if I can't open the case inside the store, I could just shake it. If it's on the first hub the way mine was, it will rattle.

I also think if you hear a rattle, that means they have used a 2-disc case. I was buying Dr. No last night. The first one I had in my hand, I shook it and couldn't hear much of anything. I shook the copy behind it, and heard a rattling noise and it did seem as though it was sitting on the top hub. I've bought 3 steelbooks so far, and all have had 1 hub inside. I still need Die Another Day, Live and Let Die, and For Your Eyes Only. Hopefully none of those rattle when I buy them.

Gizmo 10-23-08 10:28 AM

So is it better to get a 1 Disc or 2 Disc Hub? Gonna try and buy all of these later today.

1 disc hub.. 2 disc hub looks stupid with only 1 disc.

Sweet, thanks! Hoping I can snag some of those $10 coupons today so I can buy all 6.

And this boggles the mind. There's never been a 2-disc steelbook BD set in the US. Why in the world would they include those in some of these Bond cases?

Oh well. Hopefully the theory works out. Rattle= 2 hubs, no rattle = 1 hub.

Maybe they use the same case as the Iron Man BD from Canada?

Maybe some 2-disc BD steelbooks are coming soon!

I would think the studios get the cases from the same supplier?

Problems, problems, problems.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY seems to be the one Bond Blu-Ray disc that doesn't work with most players. I have a Samsung BDP-1000 with the most current firmware, and it won't work, as some others in this thread have experienced.

Ongoing discussion on it here:

Its not playing it almost every Profile 1.0/1.1 player

Looks like the Panasonic BD30 is safe. :)

Amazingly all the Panasonics are fine since I beleive they (along with the PS3) are what most factorys use to test discs.

bunkaroo 10-23-08 02:09 PM

So since we don't usually see these kinds of issues with Sony BD's for instance, does this mean Sony may be doing more thorough testing than Fox?

Seems to me all the major "can't play" issues I've heard in the past 2 years have largely been Fox discs. While this certainly exposes the issue of having older players not be future-proof, it's still more the fault of the content providers if they are supposed to be obligated to make sure at least the feature can play on 1.0/1.1 players.

I'm still using the BD30 as my primary player until circumstances show it's been "left behind", and then I'll go with a BD55 or a 550.

Universal and Paramount have been having issues as well lately with the older players so its not just Fox (though they have be the biggest).

But does that take inflation into account?
