OK, I had CC match the web price for 7 titles on Tuesday. Made the titles $15 and $20 per title.

This morning I went back and ask for a Price Match to the 50% off. They said sure and gave me back only 50% off the in store original price of $25. Thus each title was $12.50. Not much of a very good deal, thank God I had a free $100 GC to use.

I agree with others, sub $10 titles is what is needed. My wife is getting out and will try PMing to Walmart. Good luck to everyone PMing!

vman69 03-30-08 01:38 PM

Picked up:
Jarhead 12.50
V for Vendetta 12.50

This really is ridiculous, and I can't understand why these things aren't being blown out yet. I'm not paying more than $10 per title either, and these incremental price drops and fluctuations to even higher prices is really burning my ass. Even DDD hasn't gotten the memo that this is a dead format.

Agreed. It's flat out stupid, and I am glad to see that I am not the only one here. $10 or nothing.

PopcornTreeCt 03-30-08 02:20 PM

I agree. That deals are non-existent. But the format isn't totally dead until the last release comes out.

Well, I ended up doing pretty well today. I took the CC ad into Best Buy, along with the movies I'd picked up last Tuesday. At first, they said that they wouldn't match the sale because it was obvious the 50% off was a clearance thing. I pointed out that it was an advertised special and they then offered to adjust my prices to whatever Circuit City's website showed. The first two they checked were actually higher than what I'd already paid, so I said to forget about it and just refund my money. As the woman started to process the refund, I mentioned that I was disappointed the customer service rep on Tuesday had told me they would be price matching if that wasn't the case. At that point, she excused herself and came back a couple minutes later, saying they'd go ahead and do the price match. I'm not exactly sure how she processed it, as some of the final prices are more than 50% and some are less, but here's what I ended up with.

Zodiac Director's Cut - 11.84
Willy Wonka - 8.14
Caddyshack - 12.50
The Departed - 11.84
American Gangster - 9.99
Clockwork Orange - 8.14
Mad Max - 12.50
Twilight Zone - 8.14
Unforgiven - 8.14
40-Year-Old Virgin - 7.09
Wyatt Earp - 12.50
The Shining - 8.14
V for Vendetta - 8.14
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - 7.29
The Fountain - 11.84
Anchorman - 12.50
Children of Men - 8.99

So about $150 for 17 movies. Not bad at all. It's a big YMMV, but if anyone bought any HD DVDs in the last week or two from Best Buy, it's probably worth attempting the price match.

I tried and failed. First, the girl checked CC.com to get the current prices, then excused herself to go call the store to verify stock. Came out about 5 minutes later with the manager saying "they don't normally price match out of stock items but since they had already sent all their inventory back they would do it this time." Of course, she would only PM 50% of CCs online price which saved about $2 per title. I'll probably end up just returning them since they were still about $15/title.

New-AgeOutlaw 03-30-08 03:07 PM

That has to be the most retarded domestic shipping policy i've ever seen from a major retailer. I have ten titles in my cart awaiting 70% off if it ever comes, but they want to charge me $30 to ship them?

Every time my hatred for BB subsides, they figure out a way to reignite it

Feast is $9.11 at DD w/ free shipping.

I picked up Posiedon, Lucky # Slevin and Backdraft, all $12.50.

While I agree that 12.50 is too high for what should be a firesale, I made an exception on these titles because I have yet to see any of them, and have wanted to since they were in theaters (or in the case of backdraft for a couple of years).

I figure if I was willing to take a $9 chance on them at the theater its really only a 3.50 additional investment since its still a first viewing.

I passed on several titles I saw in theaters and liked because it truly is $12.50 for a movie I've already seen on a dead format.

So if this clearance has a movie or two included you've been wanting to see for a while, then it might not be a complete disappointment ;)

Happy Hunting folks!

Finally found Miami Vice at a different Circuit City (last copy). It was priced $34.99 and it didn't ring up 50% off. At first they wouldn't budge saying it was a "combo" and didn't qualify for the sale. However, I argued that there was a combo in the advertisement (Knocked Up) so it should qualify since the only two exclusions were specified as Beowulf and Shrek the Third.

They finally agreed and dropped the price. Thankfully, they obviously couldn't do the math and priced it at the same $12.50 I had purchased a few other titles for.

I agree none of these are exactly "bargains" but I decided to pick them up because the ones I purchased were more than $12.50 on the Internet (including DDD) and I didn't have to deal with shipping. I'm hoping they drop some more before the end of the 30 days and I can just get adjustments.

eBay is my new hot spot. Just picked up new sealed copies of Babel, Firewall and Black Rain for $5 each. Can't beat that.

Lucky # Slevin is also $9.11 at DD! Can't stand seeing people pay CC for these when they are so much cheaper elsewhere.

I went to CC and picked up Robin Hood, place was swamped. No bin, just the titles on the shelf as normal, so looking through them was tough. In a 6-8 foot wide space, there were 50 people or more. I think 12.50 for a brand new HD-DVD of a great movie is a good price. I could hunt and save a few bucks, but this was a nice convenient pick-up and the last HD-DVD I'll ever purchase.

Wow, that's crazy. 50 people hunting thru the HD DVDs!?! I went to two CCs and both were busy, but I was the ONLY person looking thru the HD DVDs.

Honestly wish they were on the shelf instead of in a bin. There had to be 300 HD DVDs in one bin and it took me forever to find the one copy they had in their system of Miami Vice.

HistoryProf 03-30-08 05:07 PM

why is everyone so obsessed with finding Miami Vice? There's a million of them on ebay

DWilson 03-30-08 05:12 PM

Just to chime in, my local CC had them on a shelf, at least one copy of about 30 titles, and I was the only one looking...

Zen Peckinpah 03-30-08 05:14 PM

Bought Training Day for $12.50.

I've actually bid on a few of them. Always got too high for my tastes (was trying for $10-$11 including shipping). Still would have liked it for under $10, but $12.50 without the hassle of Ebay shippers will do. I wouldn't have paid the $17.50 price it should have been at 50% off, but stupid CSRs worked in my favor.

For me, it's more like why is Universal obsessed with not lowering the damn price, it's never been lower then $34.99 and has never been part of any BOGO sale. I love the movie and wanted the HD since it has both cuts, but I don't see the reason in paying such a high price for any HD or BD.

Besides, I'm also weary of buying any used HD since it seems the slightest blemishes can screw up the playback. I've only bought one used HD, Children of Men, and they let me see the disc before buying it, so I knew what I was getting. Worst fear is a floating disc from some dumb seller.

sbelli 03-30-08 05:45 PM

^^FYI, Miami Vice is $18.45 at DeepDiscount. That was still a bit too high for me. That's why I picked it up at CC. However, that might be low enough for you.

JimRochester 03-30-08 06:12 PM

$12.50 is not exactly a fire sale to me either which was I picked up a couple I really wanted and there were only a couple left. They wouldn't survive to the next level. I'd rather see $9 myself but obviously there is demand at that price so they sell them. We have no Hollywood Videos and our Blockbusters don't carry any HD or BD so that avenue is completely out. I did grab a used copy of Heartbreak kid used off Amazon, saved a couple bucks and it showed up in 2 days.

I assumed I'd be one of few there for HD-DVDs, but it was a madhouse. I wanted to snag a Forbidden Planet for a friend, but it wasn't worth fighting the hordes.
