As "fire sales" go, this one is a dud . . . so far.
They killed off the format so I don't know why the studios/stores are dragging their feet in liquidating the remaining stock. It's not like the ranks of HD DVD ownership is sharply rising. So, just sell off the remaining merchandise already and we can all move on.

So then the ad was a mis-print?

Where did you get this info from?

sbelli 03-30-08 09:36 AM

^^ Then why does the physical ad not say "in store only" but in fact says select titles available online.

DVD Polizei 03-30-08 09:47 AM

Because Circuit City is retarded. Even with 50% off, I think you can beat their prices at Amazon and DeepDiscount.

Still, I got a chuckle from going to their website and viewing their "sale", so once again, CC brings teh funeez to my crib.

New-AgeOutlaw 03-30-08 09:59 AM

Just got back from Circuit City. I bought 7 HD DVDs @ 12.50 each. 50% of original price of 24.99. I asked if I could price match CC online. They would not let me because these movies are marked down in the stores system to 12.50 which is less that what the price is online. If these would have rung up at full price, then at the end of the transaction they had to scan a code or enter a coupon number, then I could have price matched before the 50% off.
I obviously wanted to price match online, then get the 50% off.
I didn't expect that and I didn't get it.

Can you tell us what you got? Also, were there other original prices of $19.99 or $29.99, $34.99, etc?

Luck #Slevin was marked 24.99 in-store and their website has it for 9.99. Everything in the store was 24.99, 29.99 or 34.99 before the discount, so the website does have a few titles that are at or below 50% off MSRP. Pitiful selection, though.

vballboy51 03-30-08 10:26 AM

i just got back too. didn't buy anything, but yes, prices are at their normal, stickered price for CC. also, there were signs that said "regularly priced 24.99-34.99" - and 24.99 was the cheapest i saw.

nothing stood out to me as a good enough deal to pick up, but thats because i'm cheap :)

i went to CC this morning. didn't see any $19.99 titles. the selection of around 100 movies they had were either $24.99, $29.99, or $34.99. here's some instore prices i can remember before the 50%. i walked out with nothing although a couple were decent enough deals.

Borne Ult - $29.99
Borne Sup - $24.99
Transformers - $29.99
V for Vendetta - $24.99
Batman Begins - $24.99
Half Baked - $24.99
Terminator 3 - $24.99
Fearless - $34.99
Breach - $29.99
Matrix Trilogy marked $79.99 but rang up $89.99

E Unit 03-30-08 10:36 AM

I picked up Grand Prix for $12.50 and Smokin' Aces for $15.00. No Miami Vice, Dammit.

postalpez 03-30-08 10:39 AM

didnt buy a thing. some prices are still over the msrp (mall rats is stickered at $24.99) msrp is 19.99)

I do not know if the ad was a misprint but the person I talked to at CC told me the website was going to keep lower prices after this week since HD DVD will be available there for a while longer than in store. This sale was to liquidate all store inventory to prevent having to send them back.

This was the reason I got for not getting a price match on the titles I got today. Also that they ring in discounted already so they cannot be overridden.

I did make a purchase though:
Casablanca $12.50
Casino $12.50
Deer Hunter $12.50
The Kingdom $15.00
MI 2 $12.50
Unforgiven $12.50

For those of you that want a fire sale, who wants to buy my Casablanca, Unforgiven and Deer Hunter SD DVD 2 disc editions sealed for $5 each? -wink-

Pizza 03-30-08 10:50 AM

Selection was small so I couldn't figure why folks looking at the bin hung around forever. I took a quick glance and grabbed "Enter the Dragon" and "Dawn of the Dead." I walked off for awhile, came back and the same people were still staring at the same stuff. I noticed "Casablanca" and grabbed that too and went to make my purchase. I double checked the return policy -- 30 days with receipt unopened -- in case I change my mind or find a better deal. So, three more titles than I thought I'd buy. Not a super duper deal but OK enough for titles that I've been eyeing for a long time.

JimRochester 03-30-08 10:59 AM

Went back today to get my 50% price match from yesterday. While I was there my son asked me to pick up Smokin Aces which I did for $15. Not a great deal but I didn't have a good copy of SA. I don't mind upgrading any of my first generation DVDs or any DVD-Rs. If I already have an anamorphic 5.1 sound factory DVD I am going to be very particular about upgrades or I'll spend another bazillion dollars on movies I watch once every year or two.

Are there any Hollywood Video stores neary you? Not sure if their HD DVD sale is still valid or what the current thing is, but you might try there for Miami Vice. It's where I picked up my copy.

E Unit 03-30-08 11:25 AM

No, the HV's in the Central Texas area folded at the end of last year, so I missed on that boat. Aggrivating part was the fact that I was in Calif last month and made it to the HV in Westood Village near Hollywood, CA and they didn't have any either.

sbelli 03-30-08 11:32 AM

Yeah, I was looking for Miami Vice as well. No go in Greenville, SC. I picked up quite a few for $12.50-$15. But may take some back if I can find better deals.

Got Casablanca, MI:II, MI:III, V for Vendetta, Lethal Weapon (also had wanted LW2 but wasn't there), and Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift (mainly for reference material)

Mercury&Solace 03-30-08 11:49 AM

IMO these "deals" are still not good enough. HD DVD is a DEAD format. I don't get why stores and studios are still dragging there feet on this.

I am sticking to my guns and not buying any movies that aren't sub $10, this is ridiculous. There are still a couple titles I want and Hero's S1, but I am not going to continue buying into a dead format unless the price is right.

Good luck to the rest of you.

edstein 03-30-08 11:51 AM

I went to CC and picked up classics.

Casablanca
Bullit
Robin Hood

$12.50 each.

jpb07 03-30-08 11:56 AM

Horrible CC deals in Champaign, IL. Best Buys here and in Orlando have completely sent back their stock....no 70% off sale. I still find the raising of prices to MSRP on bb.com highly suspicious of a good online sale soon.

darkside 03-30-08 12:17 PM

After paying $5-$7.50 for a bunch of titles at HV this deal just doesn't interest me. I agree that paying more than $10 a title at this point just doesn't seem worth it.

Gizmo 03-30-08 12:43 PM

Unless its $10 or less...pass. C'mon Amazon!

LivingINClip 03-30-08 12:53 PM

I just go to Amazon - sort by price and then buy from third party merchants. I've got plenty of DVD's for $10 bucks after shipping.

Just ordered Mystery Men for $10 bucks.

I'm with you fellers.

This really is ridiculous, and I can't understand why these things aren't being blown out yet. I'm not paying more than $10 per title either, and these incremental price drops and fluctuations to even higher prices is really burning my ass. Even DDD hasn't gotten the memo that this is a dead format.
