Is anyone else surprised at the basic lack of major clearance deals on HD-DVDs? I thought for sure, by now, We'd have sub $10 amazon titles, especially with the announcements of the Matrix and Transformers and such on Blu...I've been being very patient trying to not pick up a few things I'm waiting for...hopefully a month from now we'll see the big drops.

I was checking out Buy.com yesterday looking for some bargains, and they still have a bunch of $27 titles...... :hscratch: |
Just something I noticed from a few of the titles I saw at WM. It seems like the ones that were not dual format releases are getting marked down to $17...the others are still up near their Blu brotheren. It's been discussed over and over around here and I've seen one theme that makes the most sense. As a retailer do you want to mark down your product to $17 and see people buy it or do you wait for the person to buy that movie at full price on Blu? As for the HD-DVD market as a whole... I have a hunch Toshiba shut down production on their players to HELP out retailers who were patient. While BB was clearancing out the players at bargain prices, many retailers held firm and in the end, they are seeing selling prices way above MSRP. While this has gotten players into homes while keeping retailers happy, this also increased the likelihood of so-called "purple" households. Most of them will pick the lower priced HD-DVD over the MSRP BLU-Ray and the companies know that. I think that's why Amazon is probably the lowest prices we'll see with any surpluses ending up as new roomies for those 80s ET games out in NM. Using this logic, announcements of BLU releases of previous HD exclusives is almost a guarantee that we'll never see the bargain prices we were expecting on that title. Personally I'm grabbing all of the HD-DVDs I can. Not just for the prices but because I really don't want to pay the jacked up BLU price on something that likely was just ported over from the HD release.

dvd.co.uk has a 2 dvds for 12 pounds promotion at the moment, includes American Gangster and Atonement. Shipping is 1 pound per dvd :)
Pretty good deal, perhaps not the best for US customers but definitely great value for internationals eg Europe, Australasia etc. https://www.dvd.co.uk/landingpage_691.asp |
Well, I think we won't get any more deals from retailers, not from B&M, and most probably not for online ones.
Our only hope now is ebay, craigslist and that kind of places. (But I still have a little hope for a major markdown in Amazon) |

Probably by studio and/or B1G1. But it's only mid-April. We have a lot of HD DVD titles out there, just sitting in warehouses. If nobody bought any HD DVDs, then we'd see the B1G1 sales by now. But HD DVDs have been selling quite well, retailers know it, and are taking advantage of the "scarcity" thing. In some cases it's justified, but mostly with non-US releases. |

I haven't heard of any announcements regarding Transformers on Blu-ray. It would be kind of a big deal I'd imagine. |

Quite a few changes since Monday. Some prices have changed (both up and down), some previously OOS titles are back, but now Battlestar Galactica S1 is gone. Exchange rate has declined slightly again (making things fractionally more expensive in US$)

yeah...
I pretty much looked at all that stuff and thought it was an embeding for a picture .gif or something. |
Heh. I will say that dvd.co.uk has excellent service. I got T2 shipped to me in about 5 days for $19 and change. Price has gone up a little since then, unfortunately.

DVD Pacific has about 5 pages of HD DVDs that are priced at $11.50. They don't have free shipping but you can choose Media Mail and the shipping is pretty cheap.

Heh, just be thankful I didn't include a factor to account for the time value of money (since shipping from the UK or Australia can delay your enjoyment of the DVD moreso than just picking a title up from a local B&M or waiting 1-2 weeks for a domestic e-tailer to ship via Media Mail). When in doubt, just think "lump sum" and all will work out just fine.

Deepdiscount prices are back to $20+ on most titles... the future looks bleak.
