it is a Blue Underground 'thing' to use yellow subtitles? - I really can't stand it, wish they would use white with light black outlining.

I hate yellow subtitles as well - horribly ugly. They're especially distracting in B & W films, as they introduce a foreign color palette. One of the things I appreciate about Criterion and MoC's releases is that they always use white subtitles. Watching foreign films on Blu-ray is a major treat, as the subtitles always look extra sharp in Hi-Def!

Not overly bothered by yellow subs but I definitely prefer white.

I know that one point Sony Classics was using yellow lettering on their DVD editions, while the bluray editions used the typical white subtitling. The worst offender was 'Das Boot' where the already dark scenes were ruined beyond belief with yellow subtitles - ugh... for @#$%'s sake!...

I wrote and sent an upset-toned email over to Blue Underground over this, I really really hope this isn't a trend from BU

does Arrow Video's release of 'Deep Red' have yellow or white subtitles on the Italian cut??

White subtitles can be so hard to see though. Some subtitles are completely ruined by them. For example, I'd say it's only possible to clearly see the subtitles about 20% of the time on blu-rays like FLCL (certain scenes in this release the subtitles are downright impossible to see) and Gomorrah. At least yellow subtitles contrast nicely.

Good white subs (like Criterion does) always have a slight black outline around the letters so you can still see them against white backgrounds.

But not ever company is criterion and most subtitled DVDs dont get that kind of care. The white subtitle discs I have are all pretty hard to read, I find that unless it's a absolutely stunning transfer, yellow is the way to go.

Maybe on most of them, but Gomorroah had some that were extremely difficult to see.

I thought this was an old review and they just updated it with the new European release.

Is this OOP? Amazon doesn't have a listing for it anymore.

Amazon removed a bunch of titles that I guess they felt weren't appropriate? It is in other spots though.

I could understand Amazon removing it except the DVD is still there and a search for it brings up that I might also be interested in Clichy, Caligula, etc.

From Land of Whimsy, re Cat:
I'm at a loss to describe the picture quality of this release. It's like nothing I've ever seen, and I don't mean in a good way. "Wet newsprint" is the most accurate description I can currently come up with. This is looking to me like Blue Underground's first serious misstep for an Argento film.
He also posts three ugly-looking screencaps.

Well shit. "Wet newsprint" actually does describe it quite well.

Never trust caps. I'm sure Cat looks fine in motion.

There have already been reviews saying it looks damn good. I'll judge for myself when it arrives.

So, 1 website says it looks bad and about 4 others say it looks great. I trust it will look good despite what 1 website claims.

Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

from those sceencaps, it looks to me like the image was filtered quite a bit (DNR) and then noise was added digitally to simulate grain.

this was the same criticism that I've seen leveled at other BU titles like Django and one of the Fulcis (iirc).

Can't say anything conclusive going by just a cap- but that's what it looks like to me. The 'grain' in the image doesn't look like natural, analog grain and the image under it looks smeared.

Django looked excellent as did City of the Living Dead. If Cat looks like those 2 I'll be extremely satisfied.

All the other reviews I've read say Cat looks great, not to mention BU has a good track record. I've already got it ordered, so I'll determine for myself whether it looks good or not...
