I wonder if 150 was some sort of contractual magic number and that's why their release slate has dropped down to near-nothing.
DVD Aficionado has a pretty slick search engine. It lists 154 USA Universal titles (248 world-wide). It gives Sony 148 USA Blu-Rays, Warner 128, Fox 91, Buena Vista 71, and Lionsgate 39.

Ah. I was using www.blu-raystats.com for the Blu-ray numbers and Universal's home video website for their count.

Universal: HD DVD Plans in Flux

I thought American Gangster was probably their last release. I would certainly take Charlie Wilson's War and Atonement BD versions.

I hope they don't cancel Fletch. Who knows how long it might be before they put this out on BD.

Makes sense, with Walmart, BestBuy, Netflix, etc stating the will no longer stock HD DVD who would sell these? Without orders just from those stores alone how many would they actually press?

To my knowledge, Best Buy didn't say they wouldn't stock them. And since Netflix doesn't sell them and walmart seems to do very little HD business, there's still plenty of outlets. OF course how many people are looking to buy? If the number is low enough, then places like Amazon and so forth should be sufficient.

Here's some info regarding Paramount and BD today from The Digital Bits:

"For those of you wondering when Paramount is going to be announcing more details about their Blu-ray plans, the answer is soon. We've heard from a few replication and retail sources now that the studio has a number of new and catalog BD titles already in the works. We would expect to start seeing announcements in the next couple of weeks. On a related note, the studio has just pulled the HD-DVD listings off their press website (though the already announced titles are still in the database). So again we expect Blu-ray listings to be added soon, and we'll bring you all the official details as they come in."

Interesting story in which analyst says Blu-ray's victory had nothing to do with consumers' choice - and how it may end up hurting studios in the end.

He also echoes a point I and others have made on this forum, that it was WB's decision - and ONLY WB's decision - that led to HD DVD's defeat. Worthwhile read, even if the analyst does sound like he's working off outdated information from time to time.

I thought it was obvious to everyone that the WB decision was essentially a lethal gut-shot that just took a while to bleed out.

WB also obviously had the sales figures for hd-dvd players and saw that nowhere near enough sold during the holidays. Really, there were less than a million players (including the add-on) sold??? The ps3 accomplished those numbers in the opening weekend.

I completely agree that WB was the end of it all...However, this article uses data and information from over a year ago to help make its case. So many things have changed in that amount of time for both formats.

Also, are we sure that HD DVD players cost less to manufacture than BD players? I've heard that discs cost less, but nothing about players. We all know HD DVD players sold for less, but this doesn't mean they cost less to manufacture.

Reading the comments below was kind of depressing. Some people really want to see BD fail even though they were once really into HD media. I'm sure we would have some BD fans that would be the same way if things were switched around. How did people get so attached to a movie format? I guess dollars spent is one reason...but we're all early adopters and should be prepared for the eventual failure of one format.

But once again, the PS3 is a gaming machine first, Blu-ray player second (excluding 360 sales as well). HD DVD was certainly gaining momentum in Q4. WB knew this. WB knew their decision would help or kill HD DVD. They struck a lucrative deal with Sony while Toshiba and Microsoft we're jerking off in the next room to HD DVD porn.

Fact is, Toshiba killed HD DVD just as certain as WB did. Simply look at Toshiba's deal with Sony on supplying the PS3 with chips. HD DVD wasn't Toshiba's central interest like Sony had with Blu-ray. And that's unfortunate.

Paramount will be releasing a lot faster than you think.

Why do you say that? I see Blu-ray overtaking HD DVD in standalone sales in December (not even counting all the PS3s) and a slightly higher sales ratio in Q4 than in Q3 (63.25% vs 62.5%). While that may have been your perception, the numbers don't bear it out.

Surely not an assumption, I'll just leave it at that.

Well we all know Paramount will make Blu-ray movies. Unless jiggawhat is an "insider" its all just speculation right now they they are going to release a ton of movies right away.

I'll make the assumption that tomorrow the Sun will come up.

It happens with tons of Universal/Paramount releases. Sometimes they mention HD DVD, sometimes now. Sometimes there is even several different commercials with HD DVD and without. I wouldn't read to much into it, especially since Beowulf is in stores right now in the back room.

Is "LOTS" the same as "LOTS" that they said for HD DVD? When they released all of 15 movies in 6 months? Even when Paramount was neutral they released movies at a fraction of what nearly every other studio was doing. Hopefully they are working on "LOTS" of titles, but I'll believe it when I see them.

Why don't you email Bill Hunt that question?

Are you skeptical of every single glimmer of positive BD news?
