Sad to see this happen, I love HD-DVD and still perfer it. But since I own both. I dont mind that much, does suck that for Chrismas we bought my brother an HD-DVD player. But am looking for all the sales

Just imagine if WB didnt go Blu, there were reports that they were going to go HD-DVD if FOX did. From what I read it was close but rumors are at the last minute Sony gave them a pretty big offer. Imagine if it went that way. The tables would of been turned right now.

Exactly. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, in a way it's our "job" as early adopters to champion the format, if we want to see it succeed. That's how the hurdle of transitioning to mainstream is achieved.

There is only maybe 20-30 members that actually really post in this forum, thats hardly any evidence of "chipping away at DVD". Take a look at the DVD part of, well, DVDTalk. Many members are simply not interested in anything HD at the moment for various reasons (price, lack of titles, etc).

WE would simply rather wait for a title to be on HD/BR then buying the SD. Trust me, its killing me that I have to buy The Darjeeling Limited on DVD in a few weeks. Why can't this be on Blu-ray? The last SD new release I bought was Halloween (Zombie) and before that...can't even remember. The only DVDs I now buy are $5 or less ones, or TV on DVD (with the occasional odd release like Zapped! and such that will take years, if ever, to be any HDM format).

My experience in the DVD forum here has been many users saying they were "waiting the war" out. I expect to start seeing more and more DVDTalkers frequenting te HD subforum in the coming months.

A site like HighDefDigest will give you more of an idea about how many people out there who really support HDM. There are tons of people over there.

I think that $100 would go farther buying up HD-DVD's if they are put on clearance considering you already own several HD-DVD players.

I don't know how much truth there was to those rumors, but it does leave a bit of a sour taste to see a one format medium forced on the customers. Everyone throws out the tagline that the "consumers chose a format", but it's really six people or whatever that bought stuff from that store. It just seems like we as a society want answers and results now, and if there's any uncertainty it has to end this instant. I would have liked to have seen this played out a bit more naturally that to have one format picked after 10 seconds and everyone falling behind it. I get the same vibe from the presidential nominations, how everyone wants to annoint someone this second, even though we just started primaries and such.

Still, I can't complain too much. I like Blu-Ray, I figured Blu-Ray would prevail so I bought most of my Paramount/WB titles on that format initially, and I do like the added capacity of the discs. And I have two players to play them in. But I just wish things would be allowed to play out a little more rather than forcing an answer after a short period when so few people did anything about the formats.

Do you honestly think Toshiba would admit to dropping the format until there was an official press conference? What would you expect her to say?

Maybe so - but this, right now, is pure speculation.

Perhaps a few of the people you have in mind have a different opinion but for the majority of those who do not frequent online forums to get the news until there is one-colored HD case on display the shift towards mass presence will not be obvious.

As I have noted earlier when all major distribs unite behind one format and the retailers begin following their recently announced plans you could start speculating that perhaps people aren't noticing. Until then for many the status quo will be unchanged.

The rest of the talk about indifference, consumers satisfaction with SDVD, and perpetual gloom will be taken care of once campaigning by all retailers begins.

I don't think that what has happened in UK and the rest of Europe in terms of sales recently isn't applicable to our market. It is and I believe will have a much more visible effect.

Many folks are still within their return period (90 days is the max at some stores). I'm sure Toshiba doesn't want to deal with a mountain of post-Christmas returns. Wait until late March for a definitive response.

You could be right, but that is kind of an unfortunate position for them to take (for us, anyway). Until Toshiba officially throws in the towel, their contract with Paramount remains in force, basically preventing Paramount from announcing Blu-ray support (which I do believe they would like to do right now). And I don't think Universal will make even consider making the jump until both Toshiba and Paramount have done so. That means we'll still have another month of "uncertainty" to deal with.

I'm not sure how you can see it that way. Our discussion of it may be speculation, but if the article is based on "insider" sources, then it is more than just speculation. It has at least a small amount of credibility that mere speculation doesn't have.

I bought a HD player at Christmas for $120. I could have returned it but saw no reason to. I needed a DVD player. I already had a PS3. But I knew there would be deal on HD DVD's so taking advantage of those. Plus the A3 is an excellent up converting DVD player.
