Toshiba to drop HD DVD, Sources Say (Article title)

This is huge news...already reporting from engadget, Washington Post, UK, highdefdigest, etc.
I guess it makes sense for Toshiba to start producing blu-ray players now before all other manufacturers eat up the profit. I'm sure they don't want to left over crumbs from the pie. With the price of HD-DVD so low, i'm sure they're probably losing money...and not benefiting from it. I'm sure the data they're receiving is pointing to "if you can't beat them, then join them". Ouch. Oh well..i guess I can continue to use my xbox hd-dvd player to watch dvds. |
Well it isn't huge news until Universal and Paramount switch to Blue ray.

Maybe the newer Panasonics sell well, but it seems the sales on most standalones are just so minor as to not make much profit. |
Industry observers are closely watching Amazon, but there's been no movement, other than a 50% off sale for 150 HD DVD titles, including "Transformers," "Zodiac" and "Stardust."
And I suspect Blu-ray owners aren't climbing over each other for regular prices on Blu-ray titles, either. Or maybe I'm wrong. In any case, it is expected Toshiba will drop HD DVD soon. However, I hope they announce a comho line of players, because I have to say, I only like Toshiba's quality at this point. And if they made a Blu-ray player, I'd be all over it. |

But Paramount still needs to release There Will Be Blood :(

If the above article is true, kudos to Toshiba for doing the right thing. My personal opinion is the BDA reached out to Toshiba and put together some kind of deal for Toshiba to pull the plug earlier rather than later.

I'll take some HD-Dvds for 5 bucks apiece. Wouldn't you?
|
sounds good to me....to own collectible items on the shelf.
$5 with free shipping..then yes. I wouldn't mind picking some hd-dvd for that price. I would love to pick up the Matrix complete hd-dvd set for $10. I'll call $15 for the harry potter boxset because it looks cool. The news isn't so bad afterall.

I want them for 50 cents each at Goodwill, and players for 10 bucks.
Sony switching to VHS shows anything can happen. |
Toshiba could maybe give us the best Blu Ray player yet - XA2 style - that ALSO plays HD DVDs. :)

Can we sue Toshiba now or something? I feel entirely ripped off that my HD DVD player was cheaper that the regular player it replaced.
These guys say Toshiba are prepping relatively cheap Blu Ray players http://www.1080living.com/modules.ph...article&sid=30 Who knows. $250 is a pretty good price point to me IMHO. |
It shouldn't be a shock to anyone. It sucks for all the people, myself included, who spent money on HD-DVD. Hopefully some good will come out of it with Toshiba releasing a dual format player at a reasonable price. I want a player that will play DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, HD-DVD, HD-DVD-R, HD-DVD-RW, BD, BD-R, BD-RW, DVD-Audio, SACD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW and I want it all for under $200. Until then I won't buy another player for fear of no further media support.

Awesome. We will be getting high priced movies, no more BOGOs and profile issues for years. Woot!!!!!

Why do people want blu ray to win? Higher MSRPs on players, incompatibility issues until profile 2.0, Higher MSRP on movies. I was cool with the war continuing or hd-dvd winning due to cheaper players and movies.

Yay, no more competition, I would have thought you knew better where the pricing is going on.... |

No competition = high priced movies with very few sales. How many BOGOs have we had since Warner went Blu? No reason for CES to drop prices, no more 5 free, and now 2.0 is optional? Cute. Wonder how mich Disney is spenimg on interactive/online features that only PS3s can use. Thanks BDA! |
