Re: Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

Another positive for the Panasonic BD60 is it's very quiet. The Sony 550 does make some noises when it's loading a disc, and mine would get louder on newer discs. So far, I haven't heard a peep out of this unit.

Great review. Thanks!
It kind of irks me that this BD80 supports DIVX, but the BD60, which I was all set to grab @ Costco, doesn't (I haven't seen the BD80 in Costco).

It appears Divx is now the DTS MA of the previous models - a "upgrade" bonus. The basic model does not include it while the upgrade does. My LG BD370 went back to Best Buy for this very reason (while the European BD370 does do Divx...WTF?). I don't need WiFi or analog outs yet if I want Divx I have to buy the upgraded, bigger model. I love my BD370 except for that damn reason.

Re: Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

It strikes me as odd that Best Buy is content to sell their players at MSRP. If the difference were something small like $10 I wouldn't really care, but when Amazon (and other retailers) are consistently 10-15% less (free shipping and no tax) I cannot bring myself to buy something like this any longer at Best Buy. I guess the "average" consumer keeps them going.

I missed out on buying the Panasonic BD55 before it was discontinued (and prices shot up) so I would like to get the BD80 if I can.

Today's price at Amazon is $351 and they also have it from an outfit called "ANTOnline" for $338 including shipping. If anyone sees any better deals for this player, I'd appreciate knowing about them.

Can someone summarize this thread and tell me what the best (decently priced) player is right now?

As far as new players, these are all $299, though you can find them cheaper online:

Panasonic DMP-BD60, LG BD370, Samsung BDP1600 all have received very good ratings and all stream something.

Bestbuy.com has a promo going on where you get a free BD with any BD player purchase.

The Sony BDP-S350 is also a good option. Personally, I would recommend any Sony or Panasonic.

Re: Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

Ok, so I bought the Samsung 1600 model at Best buy last night. I noticed this in their description of this player on bestbuy.com:
Wi-Fi-ready
For wirelessly streaming videos, songs and photos from your PC directly to your TV (requires wireless dongle, not included). Ethernet port for connection to your local network.
But I don't see anything about this in the instruction manual. I couldn't find anything about this from the samsung site either. Would like to know if this works with a Mac, if it does in fact work at all.

BestBuy didn't seem to have the wireless dongle, either. Are those available yet?

Re: Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

The Panasonic BD-60 (BD-605K @ Costco) has an issue with a Monoprice 1.3 hdmi switch. My player and this switch combo will not pass a signal to my projector. This is the only hdmi device I own with this problem with this switch.

Re: Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

Don't know if this was covered earlier, but what happens when you connect a BluRay player to a standard def TV? Can you watch just standard DVDs? Do BluRay discs get downconverted? Or nothing at all?

You can play everything, but the output can be in SD only. Blu-Ray will just look like a top quality DVD.

Re: Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

Saw the new Pannys and they look slick. I'm still waiting for a player that can do Divx via USB/SD and have some sort of streaming I'd actually use (Netflix is nice, but the selection of films and TV Shows suck).

Re: Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

Apologies if this has already been covered in this thread, but are there any differences between the Samsung 3600 and the 4600, other than the slim design of the latter?

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but it looks like Logitech came up with a solution for PS3 owners who use a Harmony remote. $60 though...

To answer my own question: no. I plan on ordering the 3600 next week.

BestBuy.com has the 4600 for $449. Last week it was $499 with a $100 giftcard. I think the 3600 is onsale as well - online only.

Re: Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

If you're waiting to get a player that's $500, the Oppo Blu-ray player will be available to the general public pretty soon. You would be best off waiting for that. They're saying prolly mid-June.
