Credit goes to rkndkn in the DVD bargains forum:

A new buy B2G1 free includes a lot of new titles.

Only thing is prices are somewhat expensive.

Ahh! Thats it! I was wondering why a yogurt store would sell HDM. We don't have one of those out here where I live that I know of.

I call bullshit on this one. And if it's true, I need to see the numbers!

What I'm hoping the studios do is keep their dual release setup for new releases but instead of doing a 2 disc edition, just stop that and move them to the BD version. So in essence, you'd have your standard release with a couple of featurettes and then the BD version with all the goodies. This would help their profit margins as well as push the HD genre far faster. The only thing is it might alienate customers but I think it'll be worth it to do this.

For people to invest in catalog titles again, they'd have to bring something compelling to each release. So far we haven't seen all that much aside from the obvious visual and auditory differences to really get someone to buy an old catalog title again. Bladerunner is the best example of a catalog title done right.

Split the VOD discussion off into its own thread.

Got this from Grubert on blu-ray.com. Standalone units for the last 3 weeks. These DO NOT include PS3 or 360 add-on.

Week......Blu-ray HD DVD
1/5.........15,257 14,558
1/12........21,770 1,758
1/19........16,496 8,639

HD DVD got a bump from the price cuts, but is 7,000 units a big boost?

acubfaninmd 01-29-08 09:39 AM

Besides the PS3 which blu ray player would you all recommend to get. I know the A3 is one of the best, if not the best HD dvd player, is their one on the Blu Ray front that is considered to best on the market and if so how much does it cost. Which lower priced Blu Ray players would you say is as good or better than the PS3. I am going to get one with my tax return so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I wouldn't consider the A3 the best. Maybe best value.

For BD, the Panasonic BD-30 is the best choice right now. It is profile 1.1 and can be had for around $400. The new players announced at CES will be arriving in the next few months.

I'd think it is when people are actually buying the machines, rather than getting them free with an HDTV purchase.

This is just going to lead to another bickering match. I'd just as soon this be a Blu-ray news and discussion thread, not "bad/tepid news for HD DVD is good news for Blu-ray news and discussion thread".

tonymontana313 01-29-08 10:20 AM

For those of you that don't frequent the bargain forums, Amazon has Lost Season 3 on Bluray for 39.99. That is a freaking steal for a quality 6 disc BD set. It's already climbed up to #7 on the Amazon rankings and this is one of those while supplies last type of deal so jump on it asap.

Why are you passing on the PS3? I just got it as a player and think it is great. The auto-updating firmware alone puts it miles above any standalone player in my mind. Plus the upconverting is really top notch.

Probably so, but where are we supposed to discuss sales numbers? Standalone numbers are hugely important. Now that those are being made available, actual number of units sold, I think we definitely should know what they are and be able to discuss.

Adam Tyner 01-29-08 10:42 AM

Moved the discussion about HD DVD players to the HD DVD thread.

Discuss Blu-ray sales numbers in the Blu-ray thread and HD DVD sales numbers in the HD DVD thread.

I agree that it's kind of silly that they have to be broken up like that, but maybe that'll stave off the spinning.

What he said. Also, it is a better investment in general even if you don't like to play video games. It will have resale value down the road to someone who may not be interested in Blu-rays simply because it is also a great gaming system.

I am not passing on the PS3, I am just trying to figure out if there are any standalone players that are as good as the PS3. Right now the PS3 is my first option and the one I am going to get unless I find out about one that is at the same price point as the PS3 and better than the PS3. I need to get a Blu Ray player soon since I have around 18 Blu Ray movies that I purchased during the Amazon B1G1 free sale and other sales.

acubfaninmd 01-29-08 10:56 AM

Does the PS3 come with HDMI cables? If not I know to go to Monoprice to get them. From what I have seen on here Monoprice seems the place to go for HDMI Cables. That place or bluejeans or whatever their name is.

PS3 does not normally come with a HDMI cable. Some places have had bundles/promotions that include one though.

there is still no better overall Blu-ray player than the PS3 for $399. when the panasonic BD-50 comes out, it may be the absolute best choice in blu-ray players (pending reviews), but until then the PS3 is still tops.

to answer the quoted question, no the PS3 does not come with an HDMI cable.
