oh boy...good point...I can see it declining throughout the 2008 and beyond since they have invested so much into it.

I'm hoping so. The technically have yet to even make a dent in DVD sales so hopefully the sales continue.

I hope they do and soon. I was starting to get all excited by the somehwat more affordable prices, both hard/software. To the point I might postpone an HDTV purchase until this years models are released.

I won't be purchasing at PS3 at $300+ just to get a BD player, even if that is the cheapest option and still considered the way to go. Which means I might sit on the sidelines even longer with no HDM/DVD purchases until the time a ~$100-$150 player is available (with a few free movies). Same with media, if everything being released is going to be ~$20 for the next year or so.

Rationalizations aside, less competition means higher prices. And Blu-ray discs are more expensive to replicate, something that will start to weigh in if volumes rise.

Perhaps it's time to consider HDM a niche format, and leave a future technology like downloads for the mass market?

I'd like to see my local video store move closer to 50/50 on their carrying of Blu-Rays vs Standard Dvds. Hopefully with this announcement more Blu-Ray players will be sold and more titles will be available for rental.

Seriously, I think we all knew this was gonna happen eventually. There's no way in hell I would ever re-buy a Blu-ray movie that I owned on HD-DVD. There's no upgrade there. I own both formats and financially speaking I've supported both formats nearly evenly. I like to think this announcement could fuel Paramount/Dreamworks to release a ton of movies same goes for Universal.

And yes I will still buy HD-DVDs. If my player ever breaks down I will buy another one (with this new fangled thing called the internet you can buy stuff if they stop manufacturing them.)

HD-DVDs won't be obsolete until a new format with better PQ and AQ comes along. At least that how's I look at it.
Yeah, there's no fucking way I'm re-buying my HD DVD collection on Blu-ray, not to mention my XA2 does an excellent job at upsampling SD DVDs. No point in selling anything.

Warner Brothers just sucks as a company. So, I welcome Blu-ray owners to take a good downwind sniff of what a lot of us have been experiencing. I hope WB shuts down their website for sales and only distributes the discs to places like Amazon DeepDiscount, etc.

This is going to be an excellent time to buy some movies. Maybe now we'll see a B1G1 Free from Amazon. Probably more like B1G5 Free! And all the other websites selling HD DVDs, this is probably the best time EVER for HD DVD owners.

Due to a shitty economy, I'm surprised WB decided to go this route.

I'm not as angry as I once was, because I think while I don't like Sony as a company, this will finally put them on the spot to perform and make them entirely responsible for the success of the HD format.

An increase in volume equals cheaper costs. Anyone who has done business or has studied business can tell you that.

Do you honestly think that the BD consortium will grant a license to Toshiba?

Why do you say that WB sucks as a company? Is it because they chose Blu-Ray? Their online store which has been very incompetent over the last several months? Would they suck as a company had they chose HD-Dvd?

Microsoft had the chance to make a huge difference in this, when they released the Elite and premiums with HDMI. The Elite should have been future-proof (HDMI 1.3) and had an internal HD-DVD, this could be a very different format war if they had pushed 360s with internal HD-DVD this holiday season.

I tend to agree. Sony has never been kind to the consumer and now they can start charging higher prices. Which is why WB probably got on board. They needed more profits.

Very true. This is the main reason I never considered buying a 360 in the first place. If I'm paying next gen. prices I wanted next gen. hardware as well. They didn't deliver and it might have blown the whole damn thing.

***INSIDER DAVID VAUGHN, FROM ANOTHER FORUM***

"Anyway, here is what I know. Warner and Toshiba had a deal last week with another "unnamed studio" (if you have read my posts, you should be able to figure it out and they would be considered a "major")...anyway, at the last minute, the unnamed studio got cold feet and walked out on the deal. Warner was NOT going to go to HD DVD alone because it would cause more of a stalemate and Toshiba needed to get another "player" in the group. When this other studio left the table, Warner had one choice to end the format war and that was to go to Blu-ray.

I've known about these negotiations for a while and there are others on here that can confirm because I confided in them in PM's on the condition that they kept the information tightly held. I knew a decision was going to be made today for the past couple of weeks and told people to expect a decision on the 4th. I didn't know which way Warner would go until just before the press release hit the wires...I was contacted by two sources within 1 minute of each other and I thank those sources for providing me information. I had sent an email to both my editor at Home Theater as well as Home Theater Spot informing them of Warner's decision just before Reuters reported the news.

I don't know what Toshiba will do, but for all intent and purpose, the format war is over as far as I am concerned."

Very interesting. Sounds like Toshiba had a deal with....Disney? Once they backed out, that forced WB to go Blu only. WOW.

Dude. I've been posting anti-WB stuff for months. They suck ass. HD DVD or Blu-ray. Why the wanted to go with only one format is interesting considering the current economy. But hey, they can knock themselves out.

Speaking of their store, today, i got item number 3 of 4 from my order placed in JULY 2007. The ONE BD disc came in a box the size of a case of canned vegetables.

My ship date for my last disc is in February. EIGHT MONTHS after my order.

Why wouldn't they? That is even more of a victory for them. Combo players will be important to get more of the people with HD DVD collections to switch over easily to Blu-ray.

The ONLY logical studio is Disney. It wasn't going to be Sony or Fox.

This whole war has been pretty crazy. Not surprised it came down to something like this.

I got my copy of Blade Runner in a box big enough to fit a guitar inside. I wonder who choose the boxes for shipping? They need to be re-trained.

Well after 2150 DVD titles and 12 HD-DVD titles (including Zodiac: DC and the 5-disk Blade Runner) it looks like my love for movies is coming to an end. The major studios over the past 2 years have obviously stated to care less and less about the quality of supplements and the way they treat the fan. No inserts, cover art, commentaries, exclusive supplements on HD-DVD disks (which is the only reason I bought an HD-DVD player 2 months ago; that's right they played dirty and they got me ...) really make me lose enthusiasm for all forms of DVD...We had a few good years though didnt we my love....

This article suggests it was FOX who turned down Toshiba's offer, which then forced WB to leave.

People are really getting too bothered by this. I love movies not formats. If BD wins so be it, but I'm in this for the best quality home video and both HD DVD and BD have delivered that. Cover art, inserts? Who cares, I want HD Video and audio. If packaging is important standard DVD has plenty of steelbooks and lenticular covers to buy.
