I don't think the unrated cut is being released in any region. Did a search on this forum and found no reasoning as to why the Unrated cut is not available in Blu-ray. I'm sure someone else will respond with an answer that Pro-B is refusing to give.

You'll have to ask the MPAA for their insane ideology in order for your questions to be answered. The US is the most highly censored/edited nations when compared to other "democratic" countries.

Unless you want separate cases, the 4-disc set will be cheaper on release day than getting the first three discs separately.

Or if you're the patient type, you can wait for the next BOGO sale.

I visited Fox recently and asked them why the unrated cut was not on the Blu-ray. They said that Wiseman did not get the cut to them in time for them to put it on the disc. Whether or not you want to believe them is up to you.

The UK is much more harsh on violence than the U.S. is. And they have the power to make cuts without the filmmaker's consent.

What's the one being offered in Australia? Some sort of third cut? Supervised by Alan Smithee, perhaps?

In time? Wouldn't they be working on the DVD at the same time?
Way too confusing.

The Australian one is coming out later than the U.S. one, right? That would give them more time and allow them to put the unrated cut on it.

On the other hand, as Gizmo pointed out, that doesn't explain how they were able to get the unrated cut on the regular DVD and not the U.S. Blu-ray.

Still, I'm sure they have the best interests of their consumers in mind.

which suggests that Blu-ray production has a very long lead time.

Of course, then you are left with question about why they 'suddenly' find out a week before something is supposed to street that they are actually postponing or cancelling it.

take your pick. They are being entirely disingenous in at least one or both of these circumstances.

I want to know what the real reason is as it appears Pro-B knows and its been addressed before. I don't recall a discussion on why Blu-ray gets the PG13 cut and DVD gets the Unrated.

Maybe they were up until the early or late 80's. I dunno, I seem to see and hear more f-words, boobs, and violence from UK shows and movies which are unedited versus the US. I thought the BBFC was more inclined to allow more violence and sex in "artsy" or Arthouse films (9 Songs for example) versus the "If it doesn't have references to Jesus, we're cuttin it" style of the MPAA.

Isn't it obvious? Double dipping.
Don't all studios do this all the time?

No need to. Pro-B assured me it was already addressed. I can't find an answer at any of the big Blu-ray websites so it looks like it was not addressed. I'm not going to go through hundreds of different threads to find a "fox insider" with the information. If several people here RIGHT now don't know the answer it was not properly addressed. Why can't I buy Live Free Unrated on Blu-ray on Tuesday?

But double dipping when the SD is available in Unrated on the same day? Seems stupid. They could easily just release a PG13 and an Unrated cut on the same day. Hell, make the Unrated cut available only as a separate purchase and the box set would include the PG13 one.

At this point I simply want to know the real reason. If its been addressed already it shouldn't be to tough to find out the real reason why.

I think you owe it to yourself to keep investigating... the answer is out there.

Before we all get on Fox about the likely double-dip (I don't buy the not enough time thing at all), let's not forget WB has already drawn first blood with double-dipping on HDM with Full Metal Jacket.

My money would have been on Fox to break that ground, but there you go.

True, but if there's one thing you can defend about what WB did with Full Metal Jacket, it's that the special features on the newer release weren't around when the movie first came out on HD-DVD/Blu-ray.

Fox is leaving off extras that already exist on the SD-DVD release, and in the case of Die Hard 4, they're not including the unrated cut.

The WB re-release of FMJ has a significantly improved transfer as well as a lossless audio track, which effectively makes the previous release useless. Even if it was barebones it would be a very necessary upgrade IMO.

Something else occurs to me:

Fox has had both cuts of a film on a BD before (at least with AvP - there may be others). I wonder if they wanted to do this with Die Hard 4, but didn't have time. Because otherwise, if the Unrated DVD has an HD source, I don't see why that can't have been on Blu-Ray in time.

There is a very simple reason why Die Hard 4 is not being released unrated on Blu-ray. The lead time necessary to produce a master of high quality for the unrated cut on Blu-ray would have pushed the release date much further back and Fox being a business wanted the blu-ray day and date with the dvd. It's much faster and frankly easier to create a master suitable for a dvd release, hence the reason an unrated version exists on dvd. I'm sure the unrated version will show up on blu-ray when they rerelease this set in a couple of years. If Fox had rushed out the unrated version on Blu-ray people here would be crucifying Fox for pushing a substandard release in terms of picture quality. Early reports are already indicating that Die Hard 4 is a reference transfer.
