Also, I just emailed HDnet customer service since I had WFI and B13 on the same order, and I was told B13 is now in stock and shoudl be shipping shortly-they just haven't updated the website yet.

flashburn 02-02-07 01:21 PM

Any idea if B13 is going to be 1080i or 1080p?

bunkaroo 02-02-07 02:41 PM

Update: Their CS told me WFI is 1.78 on Blu-Ray. I guess that makes sense considering the DVD was too, but I can't understand why they would then show it scope on HDnet itself.

Hopefully I'll feel better about the opened up AR when I'm actually watching it vs. seeing screenshots.

Big news HD-DVD fans, as long as my distributor is accurate which they usually are we have one of the big titles getting a street date:

Children of Men: 03/27/07 in a combo and msrp is $39.98

definate pick up for me.

Angel Pagan 02-03-07 07:49 AM

Excellent news. Saw this recently and thought it was fantastic. Can't wait for this release.

Mr. Cinema 02-03-07 02:19 PM

Not only is Children of Men a great film, but it will make a great show-off disc with its Cinematography, which it should win at the Oscars.

$40 for a movie? Even if on HD, that price is a joke. Looks like Ebay and places like here are going to be a huge marketplace.

I've yet to get a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player, as I'm still on the fence awaiting a winner, which unfortunately will likely not happen. I'll likely pick up a dual-format player (2nd gen unit).

I am rooting for HD-DVD, but for them to strictly limit future releases to a combo, thus raising prices, will hurt dearly. Someone in management needs to make a big correction, and fast...OR DROP PRICES.

That price right there, does not entice me to jump into either format. WOW!

digitalfreaknyc 02-04-07 12:32 AM

You can find combo's for around $25. You'd be surprised how many SD-DVD's have high SRP's like that.

Bokasmo 02-04-07 03:49 AM

Uhmm...I can't remember the last time I've paid retail for a DVD, except if it was a limited edition, gift set, or foreign release.

I pay between $9-$11 per DVD, including brand new releases. You know, the usual sources, CH and/or Ebay.

Even $25 is WAY too high. I have seen HD-DVDs and BR discs for about $12-$15 on this forum and on Ebay, so that price isn't too bad...

Bcolon 02-04-07 07:38 AM

A don't remember any $40.00 standard definition DVDs for years. Anyways, I saw Children of Men in theaters yesterday. Pretty good movie. Would have liked to see a little more for the ending though.

Aren't the MSRP for BD discs $40?

Drexl 02-04-07 09:47 AM

Fox's standard definition DVDs were $40 list at first, and Disney's 1999 classic animated titles (with dated laserdisc transfers) were also $40. Early Universal and Paramount titles were $35. Again, these are MSRP, not street prices.

Part of the problem is that retailers aren't discounting these things enough. The list price on the Superman Returns 2-disc DVD was $35, the same as the BD and $5 less than the HD DVD combo, but retailers discounted the DVD more heavily. HD discs are just not high volume enough to be used as loss leaders yet.

I realize history is repeating itself, but Fox didn't become a DVD powerhouse until they started releasing feature-loaded SEs at reasonable prices. Fight Club was the turning point for that studio. They're gonna suffer the same fate with Blu-ray if they try to pull the same stunt. Who the hell is gonna pay 27-30 bucks for a bare bones title except for diehard enthusiasts?

ALOT of 2 disc sets right now are easily $20-25 for sd dvd. I think Pirates of the Carribean DMC was one recently. It looks like the studios like releasing 1 disc and 2 disc versions now. The 2 disc being at least $20.

HD-DVD and BD prices are really not that bad for what you get. Like others have said, they can easily be purchased for $20-25 at least. Some less than that.

Fight Club was $27.99 at Best Buy for a looooooooong time. Until it was on sale on a Black Friday for like $12.

Looks like Warner is planning to bring this philosophy over to BD/HD-DVD as well, so look to pay an additional premium for them. From their CES press release:

Warner Home Video will also release Ultimate Collector’s Edition HD DVDs and Blu-ray Discs to meet high definition and collector consumer needs.

dkny75 02-05-07 10:47 AM

The Ultimate Collector's Edition HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs were in regards to the Forbidden Planet HD DVD set with the tin and little robot figurine. It wasn't in regards to 1 disc versions or 2 disc versions. The movie that was included in the tin was the exact same you could have bought by itself. It's almost like those special edition releases on standard dvd that you usually see from other regions.

I think he was referring more to major Hollywood titles, released by major studios.

A popular MSRP for 2 disc sd dvd sets is $34.99. Thats not AS high as HD-DVD and BD, but not far off.

FYI - The BD MSRP of The Departed is the same as the 2 disc SE DVD at $34.99. HD-DVD being $5 more.

Kocheese99 02-05-07 06:23 PM

more HD-DVD releases:

Harsh Times: 03/27/07 msrp: $29.95
Feast: 03/27/07 msrp: $29.95

for blu-ray:

The Queen: 04/24/07 msrp: $34.99
Deja Vu: 04/24/07 msrp: $34.99
