Will I not receiver lossless audio with this receiver? Has anyone had any opinions on this Panasonic?
You will receive lossless audio. However, the lack of processing means you can't play a 5.1 source as 7.1 with DPLIIX. Also, the audio is amplified as is, and any adjustments made to the speakers, like their volume levels, bass management, time delay, equalization, etc. won't take effect with multichannel PCM.

It may be worth looking at if all your speakers are full range and the same distance from the listening position.

Thanks Drexl,
For future reference, will I receive lossless PCM in 7.1 on future 7.1 sources (possible 7.1 HD-DVDs)?

Why are they teasing us with only 2 HDMI inputs on these new receivers? A minimum of 3 is needed for most people would be considering these receivers. 1 for your Cable/DVR, 1 for your DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player, and 1 for your XBOX 360 or Sony PS3.

Yeah, after recieving my PS3 today, I really wish I had a 3rd HDMI input on my 604 now. I didnt realize the difference between the cable/dvr box through component vs. HDMI.

Wouldn't an HDMI switcher (i.e. monoprice) work well in that situation? Or do you lose something in the connection?

Well the manual 2x1 HDMI switch from MP is only $30 shipped, hardly a bank breaker (but maybe in your case, ball breaker???)

True the 2x1 HDMI Switch is cheap but still would it kill them to put in 3 HDMI inputs on a receiver. They did the same sh!t when optical inputs first came out. The only thing different here is HDMI is already more popular and I think there just trying to ensure future sales when the 2008 models come out with 3 and 4 HDMI inputs.

That Onkyo 605 sounds great, but I'll wait until I know exactly what it can and can't do before buying.

I think it's time for me to buy my first receiver ... that thing looks kick-ass. I'll start saving up for it. Can anyone recommend me some (reasonably priced) speakers to go with this thing?

Norh Marble 4.0's are great for HT. www.norh.com
Not everybody's cup of tea but excellent bang for the buck. You may also want to check out their Prism line.

Although this looks sweet, I noticed that it doesn't mention if it upconverts.

edit: nevermind, found on another forum where it says it does upconvert.

Through HDMI or component? What I read, I thought it said only through component, but I only read the specs on J&R's site.

be careful with that Onkyo. It's got the Faroudja scaling chip which can cause macro-blocking in plasmas (and LCDs I think).

From what I can tell, HDMI and component inputs will be displayed at their input resolution. All others will be upconverted.
