Why is that? If that were the case, they wouldnt even have mentioned it.

They've been building these things for weeks, of course they aren't going to be up-to-date by the time they hit store shelves. And why would Pioneer release a player that couldn't play all the discs out there? They mention it because (like I just fucking said), retailers are breaking street dates. Instead of getting a flood of calls and bad press, they put out a statement.

Some people just see doom and gloom everywhere they look.

I expect their WONT be another firmware upgrade before next week. Like you just fucking said, someone already picked one up. I dont see how they could implement this change before the release day next week.

You don't see how they could upload a DVD image to a website on December 4th? That would take them - oh - a whole minute to do. And what exactly am I not believing? Did Sony say they won't provide an upgrade or was that your assumption riddled with bias?

First off, You didnt clarify online. It sounded like you meant the actual players would have the firmware upgrade already. Secondly, I even doubt it will be available on their site. I guess we will see who is right next week, wont we.

It took Samsung how long to have a firmware upgrade? You give Sony waaaay too much credit.

So, yeah, I just ordered Enemy of the State on Blu-ray.

Really, I don't see what the big deal is. Sony already issued a firmware update for the PS3 if anyone is concerned. I'm looking to get a second player already, and if I can't get a PS3 soon, I will look at this one.

Im just tired of the spin. I simply post information from hddigest and he tries to spin it to make it sound like its gonna be fixed by next week (or already fixed).

I'm going to hold out for the PS3 as a backup. By the time I start looking for one (Spring '07), maybe they will have some of the bugs worked out, especially the HDMI handshake/flickering issues. And I think I'd rather have a backup player around $500 as opposed to $1000.

I just hooked up my PS3 and am looking for some Blu-Ray purchase opinions. I should be heading to Best Buy in the morning for some component cables and I wouldn't mind picking up a disc or 2 since I have around 70.00 in Best Buy bucks.

Do you have a HDMI capable receiver? Several of these have an uncompressed PCM track that sounds incredible, especially Black Hawk Down.

The rebates that come with the PS3 are nice....$10 off a title from each studio....except they only let you pick from 3 titles

I already got X3 so ill get the rebate on that...Ill pick up The Descent as it qualifies.....Also, im gonna sell the talladega nights thta came with it and get the unrated version...it qualifies too for the rebate.

Well, Ive had my first experiences with Bluray with my setup last night and this morning. I am using the PS3 connected to my Sammy DLP via component and optical cable (my hd tivo and a1 take up the 2 hdmi slots).

First impressions of the PS3...

1. Blue tooth communication only, so my universal remote doesnt control the dvd/bd player. Bleh. I hate this, but can live with it for now.
2. DVD play looks TERRIBLE. This is NOT an option for DVD. It also does not pillarbox 4:3 material (unless someone knows of a setting that I dont know). Obviously the A1 does a much better job with DVD. Even the 360 looks better IMO.
3. BD picture looks good. Very similar in picture to HD-DVD (Ive watched a couple minutes of both Black Hawk Down and Xmen 3).
4. BD sound is good, but again, im using optical, so it could be better with a standalone.

All in all, id MUCH prefer a standalone player, but for now, this will do. If BD takes off and becomes the dominant format, I might buy a standalone (ill have to find a place for it though because im out of room on my tv stand!!).

So, for now, my view has not changed. BD is runner up to HD-DVD and the PS3 should not really be the standard player for BD.

Like all DRM, it is defeated within days of being released. Some thoughts:

- Will this piss Fox off?
- They haven't pirated the movie, just created a dump of the data. How long until that data is playable?
- The movie is only 20GB!

Wow. I thought only the Sammy didn't pillarbox 4:3 dvd content. The firmware for it does pillarbox 4:3 content on BD, but not dvd.

As far as sound, "my" ears think PCM tracks sound the best overall. You'll notice a huge difference. Even though they are space hoggers, I really love the PCM mixes.

I still put HD DVD just above BD in terms of overall presentation. But at least the BD side is getting more consistent. Too bad Fox doesn't care about giving us all the features from their damn dvd releases.

Just got Enemy of the State today and the first thing I noticed was this is the theatrical cut and not the extended version. I guess out of that 50 gig of space, they couldn't find room for the extra 8 minutes.

Well, if this gets cracked, then HD-DVD will be the first one to have playable copies since it uses the same AACS encryption as Blu-Ray. But Blu-Ray then has two additional levels of copy-protection that need to be cracked, which is a big reason why Fox is pro-BD.

I'm not sure why exactly they'd need a BD50 for this. 131 minute film. About 45 mins of standard def supplements. No commentary or exotic audio features.

They couldn't fit that in 25 GB? I'd be curious to see how much unused space there is on that disc.

Once they get it to an mpg file, I can put it on standard double layer discs...albeit, over a couple discs though.

Cant wait til hd-dvd-r (or bd-r) discs are the norm.

It does contain an uncompressed PCM track, so that might have had something to do with it. I can't find what the video was encoded at. Disney has used both MPE2 and AVC. This may have been a MPEG2 title since they had 2 layers to work with.

My concern with the BD only studios is they are not using the full 50gig of space. One of BD's biggest bragging points was the fact that they had 50 gig of space to use, but as of right now, much of that space is wasted. That's what pisses me off.

My question is why are people so suprised by this? Since when has any format ever been utilized to its full potential within a year of release?

I see all these debate threads everywhere and it drives me nuts. DVD wasn't fully utilized early on in its existence. So why the suprise now with Blu Ray?

Fact is no matter how much people claim to know... NO ONE knows what is going to happen, which is going to win, which is going to perfom better in two or three years... etc... so why debate it now?
