Clearly that's what all the BD companies are banking on.

Does anyone think this may be a reason why Sony and Fox usually leave off dvd extras:

that they both feel since they are now producing high-def discs that they want to only give us high-def extras, ya know, the whole "beyond high definition". Including dvd extras isn't going beyond HD. As in saying, dvd extras are for dvd, we'll give you something new. I know sounds pathetic, but I'm trying to figure this out.

HOWEVER!!!!!, we haven't seen that much thinking at all. I'm just trying to figure out what kind of reason they would have for doing this. X3 matched the dvd features, all were in HD. The Descent will have identical dvd features, but all will be HD. I wonder if new release titles will follow this trend and maybe any of their old catalog titles will either have new HD extras or none at all. Clearly trying to figure out any sense or reason from Sony and Fox is a tough thing to do.

it does sound weak, but going "beyond high definition" would probably mean giving the user a new experience of extra features as opposed to that "old" technology dvd.

just a thought or two. I'm probably reaching a bit, but I hope someone else sees what I'm getting at.

I see what you're getting at, but why is it that only Warner and Universal have done so with U-Control and IME? They're not even claiming to go "beyond high definition," yet they seem to be the only ones taking advantage of what the formats have to offer in interactivity.

My real thinking of why they didn't include the extra features is they want to double dip, pure and simple. Edit: But the same holds true for Universal with Kong and Warner with Superman: The Movie.

Yeah, totally agree. I'm not defending them, just trying to figure things out. I mean, it's a lousy reason, but it sounds like something Fox would try to pass off as an answer.

I do think they're still working on the whole BD-J for their discs. From Hell was delayed and it was supposed to be the first title to use that...maybe? The Descent will have the picture-in-picture commentary. I think that's a first for BD.

does anyone have an idea of how many discs the tv sets are supposed to contain? For instance, how many discs will cover a 12-episode season of Sopranos? If the amount of discs for standard tv seasons decreases dramatically, will this change the amount charged? I don't think people will justify 60-70 bucks for a three disc set. I bring this up because of the announced release of Sopranos Season 6: Part 1, so I think it belongs in this thread.

Smallville was 5 discs. 22 episodes. Oddly all of the discs had a different amount of episodes. 4-5-3-5-3 I believe off the top of my head.

I havn't really watched my set yet but the one thing I would caution is that if you are ordering the TV sets online check them out asap upon arrival. A lot of people, myself included, got the Smallville set with a few loose discs. Thankfuly I only had one one loose disc which was undamaged. The sets are real nice however.

I don't think it'll be a dramatic drop -- maybe on the order of a disc for larger sets. Season five of Smallville went from 6 discs on DVD to 5 on HD DVD. Blu-ray could conceivably drop more if BD-50 becomes the standard.

I don't think the number of discs has as much marketing appeal for TV boxed sets as it would for a movie. "Two disc special edition" has some marquee appeal. I see "the entire _____ season" more than the number of discs in the set.

There's an interesting list of upcoming Sony Blu-ray UK releases at this link, all of which I'd bet will also be released here sooner rather than later (Casino Royale, Hellboy, Big Fish, Legends of the Fall, Bridge on the River Kwai, Snatch, Secret Window, Identity and others).

Here's even more new Blu-Ray release dates:

Running With Scissors: 02/06/07
Stranger than Fiction: 02/27/06

Let me just say that the lack of HD-DVD announcements make me want to put an axe to their skull. I'm counting roughly 16 releases so for for HD in 2007 and BR about 50. Come on HD give us something to look forward to.

I'm also showing the following titles as being on Mortorium aka.. Delayed/Cancelled:

Blu-Ray:

Glory
Grudge 2
Failure to Launch(HD-DVD as well)
Winged Migration
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hostel

I think I mentioned earlier that Beerfest is the first shoulda-been-day/date title that Warner hasn't released or at least announced on HD DVD.

Turns out they did; just not in the U.S.

Told you I would get back to you when I got the disc. Enemy of the State FINALLY arrived today and it has everything from the standard DVD. If you count the Movie Showcase it has more. Just FYI...

Ice Age, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Dodgeball coming on Blu-ray from Fox on March 13. The Dodgeball release is puzzling, since I thought that was originally released by Universal Pictures.

Commando has also been bumped back to March 13.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith will be a 50-gb disc with some extras.

Is it known yet if Ice Age will carry over all of the extras from the SD-DVD?

From the press release (It's a 25-gb MPEG disc; don't know if these are all the extras from the SD):

Ice Age boasts commentary by director Chris Wedge and co-director Carlos Saldanha, deleted scenes with optional commentary, Gone Nutty:
Scrat’s Missing Adventure animated short and three original theatrical trailers.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith (50gb, AVC) features commentary tracks by director Doug Liman and screenwriter Simon Kinberg, producers Lucas Foster and
Akiva Goldsman as well as designer Jeff Mann and visual effects supervisor Kevin Elam, in addition to deleted scenes, a featurette entitled Making a Scene and original theatrical trailers.

Dodgeball and Commando only have a theatrical trailer.

Looks like Ice Age is missing quite a bit. That is pretty disappointing. I really wish Blu-ray could get their act together and stop leaving off extras. They have plenty of movies I enjoy, but with most of them missing most/all extras plus many having poor image quality, its hard to get too thrilled about any title they announce.

Yeah, that's my attitude. I see people (especially on AVS) talking about exclusive BD studio support like it's the second coming of the baby Jesus. But, really, who gives a shit if Disney is exclusive to BD if the releases are stuff like Annapolis and Haunted Mansion?

Until the studios start to release titles that most people care about -- with the existing extras! -- they can stay exclusive for all I care.

The recent news about MGM putting out Rocky, Princess Bride, and Usual Suspects had me briefly excited. Now I see they're all bare-bones and $40. And the reviews of Rocky have me a bit wary of what to expect in terms of MGM picture quality -- I haven't been impressed with the (few) MGM titles I've seen so far on BD.

As I said on AVS, it's almost like the studios don't WANT me to care about BD. Throw me a bone to at least tempt me... Alien might do it. Or Die Hard. Or the Bond films. Or even Finding Nemo. But so far, I'm pretty comfortable saving my money.
