I never said BD is dead and I definitely urge you to try and find a post where i do.

Same as how i feel. I have to side with BR even with the bad press right now just due to the fact that market share will be in their court in the long end, so its futile in my eyes to support anything else. Just my opinion.

Using the DVDTalk HD/BD release calendar at the end of July the released count will be 34 HD to 24 BD. That is assuming there are no WB, FOX, BV, or Paramount movies released in that time period, which I think is highly unlikely.

That is with a two month headstart, so as I said, in about a month BD or maybe two at the most, BD will have more titles available than HD. Very Fragile.

The initial Blu-Ray titles are all essentially damaged on arrival, so I'd think the fewer MPEG-2 releases the better...

If they don't fix the discs soon (either get DLs out or start using efficient compression), it won't matter if there are 5x more BDs than HD-DVDs available.

Alan Smithee 06-19-06 07:26 PM

Is this disc available in all Circus Cities right now? I'll make a trip tonight instead of tomorrow if anyone can say for sure.

I've got something that beats this though- a LASERDISC with DVD demos on it! It was made for The Good Guys and has parts from different DVD demo discs by Panasonic, RCA, Toshiba and Pioneer, with movie trailers in between. A few parts even say "You're watching DVD!"

Where is the Lion's Gate info confirmed? I just read through AVS and didn't see any threads about it.

It's not been "announced" but Robert George is making *wink wink* comments about it.

Why do you have to? You see how crippled they are putting out the product, but you have to because you assume market share will be theirs. That makes absolutely no sense to me. You don't rate products on their potential. You rate on what they deliver. From what I have been reading BD just doesn't rate.

Supermallet 06-19-06 09:00 PM

I actually just got the 2-disc Crash for $10.66 at work.

After hearing all this stuff about BD, I'm seriously reconsidering getting a PS3 at launch. I might just buy the two I was planning to buy and sell both for profit. At this point, my only reason for getting PS3 was for BD anyway (I wasn't even going to get any games for months), and with the Wii coming out (and already owning a 360), I may just go the pure profit route and wait till Sony drops the price.

I keep re-reading the Unforgiven HD-DVD review and drooling...

ChrisHicks 06-19-06 09:01 PM

so if BD was to self destruct by the end of the year will the supporters still hold on to the hope that it is the bestest ever High Def. format the planet has and will ever see?

I swear I think some of the BD supporters could be sold a platter of dog crap and would slap down 1000.00 for it and think it was the best dog crap ever just because Sony says so.

and say what you will about HD-DVD but we only paid 500.00 for a much better platter. :)

digitalfreaknyc 06-19-06 09:03 PM

Wait...Supr, you haven't bought HD DVD yet?

Mr. Cinema 06-19-06 09:03 PM

The Unforgiven HD DVD is one of the better looking titles I own.

Joke all you want, but I'm seriously this close to ordering the Toshiba on Amazon.

On the other hand, this will require about $200 more in HDMI switcher/cable purchases, which is the biggest reason I've held off.

you can get those later.

c'mon. it's right there waiting for you.
all the guys here are doin it.

what're you....afraid?
chicken?

*cluck cluck cluck*

A little HD DVD won't kill ya..... ;)

Supermallet 06-19-06 09:13 PM

Yeah, I can get those later but then I won't be able to play the actual machine.

Considering how new both of these formats are, a little waiting won't kill me either way.

Flash-forward 2 weeks from now: Batman Begins is announced.

The players sell out.

Who's left without one?

That would be Suprmallet.

Yeah, that's right. We'll have to change your name to "would-be-super-if-he-had-hd-Mallet"

:)

Im just going by what i beleive to be the superior format for my needs. I truely have faith in BR, i know what it can deliver, and nothing is going to happen overnight. Once the DL films are out, i think a lot of people will be very pleased with the quality. Just by CE support alone, i feel BR has many advantages. Just because the "soft" launch is sub-par right now, doesnt mean it wont be great for the prime time, this holiday season. HD-DVD isnt exactly setting the world on fire with its soft launch as well. I'd also compare the Samsung player to the tosh, as it was originally a 1080i player, but converts to 1080p in a weird way. The sony player will be a better test of actual first gen hardware.

Ill be honest and say i am underwhelmed so far, you'd have to be silly not to be, but i still have faith in it. Call me crazy, but HD-DVD offers nothing im intrested in, especially when it comes to movie selection and shoddy hardware (IMO of course). Im still on board for a PS3, and will be happy to purchase some excellent flicks in BR once that day has arrived in november. I doubt ill be buying any games for PS3 right off the bat, unless that rumor of FF7 Remake actually is true for launch.

Supermallet 06-19-06 09:31 PM

Stop taunting me! Now it's only available at amazon through another seller, so I don't think I'm getting the discount. Let me try inputting the player-specific coupon code.

wewantflair 06-19-06 09:36 PM

The discount isn't off the player on Amazon, at least according to the T&C; it states pretty explicitly that it's only on the discs.

ok it's not working.

it's value electronics. com.
u get 2 free movies.
he's VERY well known on avs.

Supermallet 06-19-06 09:39 PM

If you look at the link with the full details of the 10% offer, both the Toshiba HD-A1 and the HD-XA1 are listed as items that will receive a discount, but it must be sold by amazon, not a seller. I'm already receiving the discount on the discs.

Digital I think you're missing a part of that link. Namely everything between www. and .com.

digitalfreaknyc 06-19-06 09:41 PM

Fixed :P

I read it...twice. The players don't receive discounts; purchasing them makes you eligible for a discount.

wewantflair 06-19-06 09:42 PM

And that merchant appears to be wordfiltered.

Yeah... it should be at all locations now. Just ask for the "Adam Sandler Click Preview Disc"
