I never said he was anti-HD DVD. I did say he was pro-BD, meaning that he clearly favored that format, and therefore had a bias toward it. And, while this review is honest, sometimes brutally so, it is still clear to me that he strongly favors BD. He even admits as much, perhaps not in so many words, but in many of his comments, such as:

It isn't so much that I think he would intentionally work to "sabotage" HD DVD, but I can't believe anyone is unable to tell from his articles on the subject that he wants and expects BD to win the war. And there's nothing at all wrong with that, unless he tries to deny it and feigns complete objectivity (which I haven't heard of him doing, BTW). No one is completely objective in this fray.

High school called, they want their crappy insult back.

What i think people are realising (even after the lackluster BR showing right now) is the future. HD-DVD is looking as good as its going to get, right now, today. Dual layer blanks and high end encoding. And ive seen plenty of HD-DVD movies and have yet to be impressed. In fact, i was super disapointed in what i saw.

BR doesnt look as good right now, but titles are similar in quality, perhaps more on the softer/not as crisp side as HD-DVD. And this is with SL discs and MPEG2. Whats going to happen once the bugs are sorted out and the BR engine is firing on all cylinders? Again, i have faith in the future of this format, not just to satisfy my needs with a weak selection of films and low quality players. Patience, baby. This format is going away anytime soon.

So, in your mind, when will Blu-Ray finally be clicking on all cylinders? Sony had promised DL discs from launch. Now little is said about their continual problems manufacturing them.

I have no doubt they will work out the bugs (and their discs will look essentially identical to HD-DVDs). But how long will it take? It could be too late. They could have destroyed HD-DVD easily, but continue to make mistake after mistake.

With it now looking like it'll be October until the Sony player is out, people are only left with the overpriced, low-quality Samsung and damaged discs to play on it. They are clearly behind the 8-ball at this point and had everything looking like a clear victory at the end of last year.

Then don't bother with HD video at all. If you weren't impressed with the PQ of titles like Goodfellas, Unforgiven, Last Samurai and Phantom of the Opera you will never be impressed with any HD video including Blu-ray. I would recommend a projector and 35mm film. That might live up to your expectations.

digitalfreaknyc 06-21-06 12:19 PM

So...by Blitz's logic....

BD is better because it will eventually possibly get better and HD DVD is bad because it can't (in his opinion) get any better, even though it looks absolutely outstandingly fantastic already.

God, I hate it when someone quotes him. Then I have to actually SEE what moronic things he's saying.

While you're busy having faith and waiting for salvation..... I'll be in my living room enjoying HD-DVD in all it's glory.

I swear I think some of the BD supporters could be sold a platter of dog crap and would slap down 1000.00 for it and think it was the best dog crap ever just because Sony says so.

and say what you will about HD-DVD but we only paid 500.00 for a much better platter. :)

Wrong....disc transfers CAN get better on BOTH formats for various reasons. Dont try and pass off this crap as fact just because your a sony fanboy.

That really surprises us. You are the most biased on this board now that Jimmy345 is gone.

This format is going away anytime soon.
Freudian slip maybe?

Thats fine. I could go out and buy a HD-DVD Player and every flick out right now if i so wanted to, but there isnt a single movie id want, and if you think that what HD-DVD is the pinacle of what we're going to see in 1-2 years from now, all i can do is disagree with you. Im not going to stoop to a level just to talk crap, i show support with my $$$, and Toshiba has nothing to deserve any of it. I wouldnt buy a Samsung either.

awmurray 06-21-06 12:39 PM

I wonder what Blitz6Speed would think if his boss thought like this:

"Blitz, I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but I'm choosing Fred for the new VP position. Your resume appears to be in order and you sure are qualified... and, frankly, I have no problem with your work. However, I like Fred. And given enough time and a lot of work, he may even eventually perform as good as you do now. But even if he doesn't, he's only asking for twice the salary you are. I'm sorry."

Not breaking down and settling.. That makes me a fanboy? If so, i am indeed a fanboy.

Edit -

awmurray

I have no boss. =)

Really?

I honestly just don't get this format zealotry. I don't consider it "settling" -- I'd call it the polar opposite, actually -- to enjoy the highest quality video format available now. If/when Blu-ray offers a compelling alternative, I'll buy into that too, but now, it's practically beyond argument that HD DVD is the superior product at present. It's not a one-format-or-nothing proposition.

Mr. Cinema 06-21-06 01:00 PM

I'm so glad we have an ingnore button.

I hate to bring his name up, but sometimes I feel like Jimmy 345 has been reincarnated.

Looks to me that a Blu-Ray purchase would be considered settling.

Well, you have no argument to stand on that it is "settling". Especially right now while BD is the inferior product of the 2.

Your a fanboy because your blindly loyal to a product that in its current state is inferior to its competitor. For some reason, you have NO doubts that BD will end up superior and win the format war.

For most of us, we care about one thing. Quality HD material on disc. I dont care if it ends up being BD or HD-DVD (or even both!).

You expect us to bow down to Sony just because of some promises that they make. We want to see proof. Which only HD-DVD has provided thus far.

Right now, I have an HD-DVD player and am enjoying it thoroughly. You, on the other hand, have numerous delays, inferior quality and promises of things to come.

Good luck with all that.

Can people PLEASE STOP quoting those posts? It literally sucks all of the fun out of reading the thread. There is no logic in them so you can't argue/debate any of the "points."

And, as has already been pointed out, it completely defeats the purpose of using the ignore list.

Any more news on a combo player. Looks like Samsung is working on one.

Well, thats not very appealing given the current situation. ;)

Supermallet 06-21-06 02:57 PM

If we see dual-players, I expect different trays for each format.

There are a lot of strange things I can understand if I really put my mind to it; however, this militant approach the Blu-Ray people seem to have is really causing some issues with the mind. I...I just don't get it.

You know what's sad? That's exactly what happened to my wife last month. :(
