Still up to reserve at EB Games/Gamestop.

Dvdlovr24 10-22-06 08:57 PM

I ordered one from Amazon. I already have a HD-A1, but I wanted to show my support for the format.

This is what I don't get. Support a format over the content?

wewantflair 10-22-06 09:50 PM

The format that has been delivering content consistently for about 7 months now, yes.

But spending $200 just to "support the format" seems a bit daft. You could spend the $200 on actual HD DVDs instead. You'd still be supporting the format, plus you'd have $200 worth of HD DVDs to watch, instead of a $200 video game system accessory you don't need.

wewantflair 10-22-06 10:26 PM

You added the "just" qualifier to his statement.

Perhaps he plays his 360 on a second smaller HDTV that doesn't have an HD DVD player yet.

It's inferred, since he offers no other reasons why he's purchasing it, and in fact eliminates the main reason to for buying one, i.e. not already having an HD DVD player.

That's speculation and not supported by his statement.

If one is buying the drive for a secondary TV, even if it's not HD, that may be a sound reason for purchasing it. If, however, one is buying the drive just to "support the format," as is heavily implied by Dvdlovr24's, then I don't view that as sensible.

Supermallet 10-22-06 11:44 PM

Thankfully, he's not spending your money. So you don't need to worry about it. :)

Well, if he is buying players just to support the format, I wouldn't mind him sending one my way, ;)

Sorry, but nothing was inferred or implied, one way or the other, by Dvdlovr24's statement. You simply chose to read something into it to support your argument. You do not have enough data to back up your claim that Dvdlovr24 will not use the drive on a second TV, any more than Suprmallet can prove that he will do so.

So take it as a hypothetical then.

Since when do we have to be sensible? That's it, I'm buying 20 of the add-ons, all of the available XA1 refurbs, and pre-ordering 20 A2's and XA2's. Why? To support Blu-ray. Talk about truly not being sensible. :p

DthRdrX 10-23-06 02:26 AM

I'm going to buy the add-on for my bedroom. I won't buy for a few months though because if MS gets low on supplies I'd rather see it go to someone just getting into HD-dvd. The more newbies coming into the format the better off all the supporters will be.

Sales sound like they are going to be real strong for this thing so far ....

If, by your second scenario, you mean that one would purchase the add-on, with no intention of actually using it, but solely for the purpose of inflating sales figures, then I agree, that would not be sensible.

However, I find it equally questionable to assume that anyone would opt for that second scenario.

You know, I was going to post the same thing, almost word for word. I am also planning to purchase the add-on (for a second TV, and to show my support for the format ;)), but I don't want my purchase to take away the chance for someone new to the format to be able to get one, so I think I will wait a bit.

I'm still very curious as to how many units Microsoft has ready for the launch date. My hunch is that it will be a significant number.

Eric D. 10-23-06 02:52 AM

Wow. You guys just spent 13 posts arguing over Dvdlovr24's comment. Why not just wait for him to post again with a more detailed reason as to his intentions before getting all worked up about it? Then you can continue your debate seeing as how you will have more info to back you up.

Supermallet 10-23-06 03:28 AM

Dth and Robo:

Everything we've heard from MS suggests they will have a ton of add-ons available, so I don't think that you two each buying one would deprive some young lad or lady of an HD add on.

True, wishful thinking on my part I guess. Reports are around 400-500K units which would be around 4-5% of the overall 360 market over the next few months. I'm thinking you should be able to get one easily, but instead I'm hoping people buy every single one of them.

I'm still taking a wait and see approach though. Worse thing that happens is I can walk in a store and pick it up a few weeks later right? You never know if they will have a part shortage or production problem.

DJ_Longfellow 10-23-06 06:41 AM

I really hope they are available easily at launch. I wonder how many of the 360 people REALLY want the HD-DVD? I know I do....I'm hoping to get one at launch though.

darkside 10-23-06 06:45 AM

I don't know, I really don't think many people want an HD disc player at this point which is why I don't like the fact that Sony is forcing BD on gamers that don't want it or need it and charging them for it. I will be shocked if MS sells more than 10K of those HD DVD add on drives this Christmas.

Coral 10-23-06 07:17 AM

The 360 lineup is a great thing and not-so-great thing for MS this Christmas.

With so many top-notch games coming out (and already out) many 360 owners probably won't have enough money left over to purchase the HD-DVD add-on. I think the add-on will do OK in sales, but I dont think it'll be an item that people scramble to get... at least not at this point.

 Well, that is the nature of this thread/forum.

Anyway, last night, I went to visit my friend who recently opened up a new restaurant. I had already eaten dinner, but I ate again to support my friend's business.

Do you normally play your 360 in your bedroom, or are you moving the system in there when you get the accessory?

Dvdlovr24 10-23-06 09:50 AM

Wow! I didn't expect my post to draw so much attention. So let me explain my reasoning. The add on will be hooked up to the same TV that my HD-A1 is hooked up to. I did just purchase the VGA cable for my 360. I am interested in how good the picture quality on the add on is, especially after the fall update comes out. I had already preordered Kong, so I canceled Kong and put the credit towards the add on. Which means that I am only spending around $170 bucks on the add on. To some this might seem crazy, but I am sure that I could describe some of the things they purchase as crazy. :)
