Got mine today and I am very impressed. Just watched MI:3 using the enhanced video commentary. Very cool.
Just got a newbie question.
I am using a VGA cable and have the resolution set at 1280x1024 (my TV cannot do 1080), am I right in thinking that the 720p and all that doesn't matter because I'm using the VGa cable and the player just puts out at that?
If I was using componant, I could then choose 720p and all that, right?

I've seen post on hardforums and teamxbox that the it will upconvert over component but I don't have anything official about it. I assume if it does upconvert over component then Microsoft might update it to disable the feature because of copyright issues. I know I played a regular DVD in the HD-DVD drive and the picture looked alot better than it does in my regular Toshiba DVD player. I'm going on posts in other forums so please don't buy one based on what I said! ;)

Not sure if this has been posted. New 40 dollar circuit city coupon. My wife used it tonight without any problems. She even printed it in the store.

well i tried a couple different DVDs that i had two of in the house, one in the HD-DVD and one in my panasonic xp30 player. both hooked to my Hitachi 51" via component inputs one and two. for me there was no difference at all. doesn't look like any upconversion was taking place.

What were the settings? What was the actual output of the TV? There has to be upconversion, or at least de-interlacing. Because DVD is 480i and an Hitachi 51" doesn't have that as an option for output. The question you are trying to answer is whether the TV converts better than your players.

I apologize if this has already been said, but did MS update the 360 to do 1080p over component? My 1080p was accessible last night...or is it still 1080i?

well, when i play an HD-DVD in the 360HD the tv reads the input as 1080i. when i put a regular dvd into the 360HD the tv reads the signal as 480p. the tv reads my regular dvd player signal as, of course, 480p.

then whatever the signal my tv displays at 1080i which is its native res. does that answer you question?

HD DVDs over VGA and Component are 1080i maximum. Same for HD DVDs over VGA but DVDs can also be upconverted to 1080i

GAMING is 1080p, if I am not mistaken.

^^^^^^

My Westy's (native 1080P) display shows 1080P (1920 x 1080) on HD-DVDs and upscaled SDs thru my 360 add-on using VGA... 360 set to 1080P output.

I haven't read the more recent pages of this thread, but I believe this table is still correct.
1080i/p summary:

1080p over component
Games - yes
1080p HD DVD movies - no
480p HD DVD extras - no
DVD - no

1080i over component
Games - yes

480p HD DVD extras - yes
DVD - no

1080p over VGA
Games - yes
1080p HD DVD movies - yes
480p HD DVD extras - yes
DVD - yes

1080i over VGA

Awesome....I dont watch movies on my 360....except the occasional PAL disc.

Kocheese99 12-23-06 12:27 PM

so if i read that list right if you have a 1080p tv then you should definately use VGA right?? I mean if you want to get the best signal for games, dvds, and HD-dvd's right?? Any info would be great, i'll be picking up the addon after x-mas.
