search still sucks a huge one

go to tv and search thread titles for atlantis
the season 5 thread is no where to be found even though it's been less than 2 weeks since it was last posted to

Numes 08-16-08 05:22 PM

I just received 5 e-mail notifications from the last message. I've received 2 e-mails before (rarely), but never 5.

i would assume the search indexing starts from oldest to newest

Hey, that seems like it worked. Thanks!

it's the same problems this site has had with search for pretty much the entire time I've been coming here

On a side note, there seems to be a glitch with the Scorpion King 2 review:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/34287...a-warrior-the/

As previously noted, the search function was screwy because the search indexes were being rebuilt. Since the forum is so large, it's got to index 5 million posts.... that takes a lot of time. It should be good now though, although I won't be able to verify that it completed until I get back to my desk on Friday.

Do you know if the issue of incomplete search results is one of the bugs being worked on? As of post #30 DVD Talk Admin didn't seem to think there was a problem with the returns.

It was one of the things being worked on, and it SHOULD be fixed. However, since we switched from a fulltext search to vB search, it will undoubtedly be different. It should be faster and produce better results.

That is correct, so people should have had more problems when searching for current stuff.

Love the multi-quotes!

Yeah, but the machocist in me liked doing it manually.

Yeah, it's pretty much worthless. There were a couple of threads I was looking to update, and just gave up after a few fruitless searches.

IB-Dick 08-18-08 10:34 AM

I just got into the office from the weekend, and am now able to check how the search index is doing. It looks like it stalled at the 95% mark, which means that the last 5% of all posts aren't in the index. I'll try to schedule a time to re-do the process.

Breakfast with Girls 08-18-08 06:23 PM

Why can I see X's obnoxious avatar (and, seemingly, just his) even though I have avatars turned off? I just verified that they're off.

Might be some sort of glitch, or maybe some sort of feature (maybe there's some sort of setting where you see admin avatars even if they're off.) Can you see mine?

WallyOPD 08-18-08 07:09 PM

I just turned mine off and can't see either X's or pilot's, so it doesn't seem to be standard behavior.

inserting links?

before the changes, you had two boxes pop up when you went to insert a link. the first let you custom name the link and the 2nd was for the link itself. only the 2nd comes up now. is there no way to customize the link names anymore?

There used to be a button for guided mode and expert mode. I'm not seeing that. What I would do now is this....

Highlight the text that you want to be the anchor (or the name as you put it) and then hit that button and type in the link. Does that work for you?

DVD Polizei 08-19-08 08:21 PM

IB-Dick,

FYI, this is probably the most bandwidth-consuming time of the day, and the forum is acting a little slow. Just to let you know. Might want to watch a few things and see how the forum handles the queries. :D

Also, love the new features. The edited link is also helpful and quick reply posting without reloading the entire page.

OldBoy 08-19-08 09:35 PM

let's see...

yup, that worked. kinda like the old way, but such is life :)

I did a bit of a tutorial on this, might help someone a little.

It was answering a question on how I posted mu links with a little silver 'link' button. But it covers the of making links in general pretty thoroughly.

You can embed any IMG call into a URL call. I'm embedding an IMG call I like.

I used to type out "Link". I found that little image and I liked it better, it's more readable, and started using that.

Just post any url with the button - http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/editor/createlink.gif - then sub in an IMG ref in the appropriate place.

[ URL="http://www.google.com/"]http://www.google.com/[/URL] (I inserted the space after the first bracket to break the call, so you can see it here.)

The part in red can be anything, of course, just delete that portion and insert anything you like between the URL brackets, including an IMG ref.

Such as - [ URL="http://www.google.com/"][ IMG]http://www.dvdtalk.com/images/newbutton2003.gif[/IMG][/URL] (spaces inserted to break it so you can see what I'm doing)

Here it is with spaces removed - http://www.dvdtalk.com/images/newbutton2003.gif(Click it)

Like this:

Anything You Like

http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/editor/createlink.gif(click it)

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...ylerdurden.jpg(click it)

Or the one I'm using. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...ments/link.gif

Too much info? There's the answer anyway.

So basically if you simply post a link to google with the Link button. Type anything you want in between the brackets in the URL 'call' or BBCode, highlighted in red above and below.

You will notice when you post a link with the 'link' button the section you can edit is ALREADY highlighted, so literally when you post the link, simply hit the 'delete' key once, and type anything you like. Even if you don't see the cursor just type what custom word you want for the link and it will work every time.

[ URL="http://www.google.com/"]http://www.google.com/[/URL]

The part highlighted in red can be anything, including an image call as covered above.

The forum, and other parts of the site, were down for a couple hours late last night. All we got was a "database error" message when we tried to click into the forum.

pinata242 08-20-08 10:24 AM

Yeah, there's a whole Drink-Man strip devoted to it, NoirFan. Keep up!

We've been having network wide firewall problems. I've checked reports from the new database server we're on at every hour of the day, and we put the server under a load to see how it would effect the forum. The database is doing great.

I'll keep my eyes open for that button that lets you change between the modes.

I knew the site was slow last night, but I didn't know there were database errors. I know a db server crashed last night, but not this one. Maybe they did some work on it. How long was it like that?

I'd say at least an hour or two, and perhaps longer. I don't know specifically since I gave up trying to access the forum.

fumanstan 08-20-08 11:26 AM

I'd like to guess it was down from about 8 to 10:30 ish PST that I was getting database errors.

pilot 08-20-08 11:51 AM

It was down from at about least midnight to after 1:30ish am EST.

IB-Dick 08-20-08 02:59 PM

Thanks guys, that is the same time the other sites were having DB issues. The problem should be fixed, and hopefully this won't happen for a while.

fumanstan 08-20-08 03:34 PM

Site's going a little slow though :(

Forum is still way, way slow in loading pages.

Music 08-20-08 05:46 PM

Yeah, the site is choking hard...

Matthew Ackerly 08-20-08 05:54 PM

Yep, ridiculously slow..

Rockmjd23 08-20-08 06:56 PM

Database error again for awhile.

fumanstan 08-20-08 07:11 PM

Yup, had the database error for about 30-45 minutes.

IB-Dick 08-20-08 07:25 PM

It's once again fixed. I just had a meeting with the serve guys and they say that the problem should be fixed for good.

twikoff 08-20-08 07:31 PM

yesh

what.. did you 'upgrade' us from oracle to ms sql?
;)
