Sorry if this has been answered, but what happened to the link to 'Adult'?

The last post in the thread that was discussing this was Geoff saying that removing the links was breach of contract and demanding that they be immediately re-implemented.

Then the thread was closed.

Wow... that is not even close to what the last post is:

No, my statement was correct.

We're either talking about two different threads or the thread was re-opened/edited/re-closed.

Music 08-24-08 09:06 AM

This is the thread about removing the Adult link http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=534976&page=2

So either it was changed, (which i what I'm guessing; which is why I had changed my post from was the last post to is the last post), there is another thread... or you are just plain crazy! ;)

Well, I am crazy, but not in this specific case. :)

There was definitely a thread where the links removal was being discussed, the last post was Geoff demanding they be re-instated, and the thread was closed. I distinctly remember looking at the end of the thread multiple times, waiting for it to be re-opened and answered.

It may have been a different thread, and not the one you linked above. Or it was that thread, and things were edited.

Others can confirm this, no?

Cardsfan111 08-24-08 08:51 PM

^ Something was changed. I do recall a thread conversation going exactly as you described, Trevor. Geoff was very straight forward w/the need for the links to be put back immediately. I looked for a bit and I don't see a post like that anywhere.

WallyOPD 08-24-08 09:06 PM

It was that thread, and the last post was either edited or deleted and the new one posted.

matta 08-24-08 10:10 PM

A lot of people are mad at me about that thread. Apparently there are some "AdultTalk Haters" out there and I stumbled into the argument and was labeled an Anti-AdultTalk person, when that's not the case.

I would have been happy if AdultTalk was just moved in the list, or if there was a refresh screen between DVDTalk and AdultTalk, or if a "======" break was added between Sports Talk and Adult Talk, or if it was set so that you actually had to click "Go" and weren't automatically transported.

I have nothing against AdultTalk, and I wish them well. It's just that I'm not fond of accidentally being able to navigate to a page that has NSFW pictures while at W.

Above quote snipped to show my preferred option. I tried to put this edit inside the quote, but it doesn't allow that anymore.

A lot of us felt this way.

I don't understand why the forum links were removed, yet the "adult DVD reviews" links are still top center of every single page, right next to non-porn links, making it very easy to get NSFW content quickly displayed.

Add a "are you sure" button or something, please.

Trevor 08-25-08 09:25 AM

Found another issue.

When you click "edit" to edit one of your posts, its defaults to a simple edit and makes you hit "advanced" to get to all the formatting controls. There doesn't appear to be a user option to change this setting.

I liked it the old way, when the little advanced template was default.

Minor quibble perhaps, but I imagine this really bothers TEK.

Trevor 08-27-08 08:02 AM

So, can Jack's question from 4 days ago be answered?

Or my questions from the last two posts?

Sorry to sound impatient, but it looked like IB was monitoring and answering things in this thread and this feedback forum. Can we get something, at least an official "no comment" to the first thing?

No comment on any other issue raised - I've not read the whole thread as I consider this to be more an IB-oriented arena - but....

.... if you go here and scroll down to the bottom of the page, there seems to be an option to display the edit options the way you wanted. If it doesn't carry through to the self-edit situation described I can only imagine that this is a <s>bug</s> feature*.

Having checked with one of my own posts, I can't see any adverse change in the edit options as they display for me but I cannot know what you see when you do the selfsame thing. For information, looking at what it says at the end of the link I posted above, from my current workstation I'm only offered two editing options.

*

When posting messages to the forums or other members, there are <i>three</i> interface types available to you. The simplest of these is a simple text box, while the last is a fully-fledged WYSIWYG editor, which allows you to format your text as you want it and see the results immediately.

<font color=blue>Depending upon the capabilities of your web browser, you may not be able to use all of these options</font>. <font color=red>If you experience problems when posting messages, try switching to a different interface type.</font>

No significant comment on the forum links issue. I'd assume it was something contractual and so unlikely to elicit an "official" answer; especially given the sequence of events/posts on which you have already commented above.

With regard to the display of "adult DVD review links", methinks that this was already discussed ad infinitum, ad nauseam here in Feedback. A software upgrade and/or an unconnected change with regard to dropdown link boxes doesn't mean that the answer/position has changed. Why would it?

Just my two pennies and sorry if I've missed the point.

Something for IB to consider.

Trevor 08-27-08 09:54 AM

Thanks Benedict.

Yep, I had already checked that editing option in my settings. I use Firefox and I only get two options, neither of which leaves the buttons there as default. Tried it in both versions 2 and 3. Oh well, not worth going back to IE for this one little tweak.

I am monitoring things and answering things I feel require an answer. I'm sorry if it appears that you're being ignored. I'm reading this for "New Forum Issues", not "General Question and Answer Time" and from what I've read the Mods have done a decent job keeping everyone informed.

Jack's question was answered. What happened to the adult link? It was deleted. He was also told why it was removed.

Why was that removed and other links kept? It was part of the deal when the site was sold that certain links would stay. There are still a few that need to go (not sure it that's one of them to be honest), however link auditing isn't a high priority at this point. That specific link was investigated and removed because there was a request to have it removed. There is a lot of though put into links on this site. Where they're located, what anchor text to display, what pages to have them on, what pages to keep them off. There isn't time to explain every decision. This is not an active campaign to keep you uninformed.

Finally, about your "Edit" question... That is a change that vB made over the years. Since this forum version was so old and we upgraded through so many versions, I have no idea when and what version it was changed in. I don't know why it was changed, although it's been clear over the last couple of versions that they have moved away from the "enhanced" and "standard" versions of the "advanced" and "plain text" modes, presumably because "advanced" and "standard" was simpler-- but that's speculation. What I do know is that changing it would take a huge amount of development time and by your own admission, it's probably not that big of an issue.

I'm sorry I treated your edit question as a "state bugs here" list and didn't acknowledge it. It was duly noted.

Trevor 08-27-08 01:16 PM

Thanks!

I think many of us, especially long term members who post/contribute much to the forum part of your site, like to know what is happening with the site and why things are done. Do we need to know or deserve to know? Not at all. But for many of us, this is like home, and it is natural to want to keep informed and have input on decisions.

Unless I'm blind, the adult link issue wasn't answered by an official IB person until your post just now.

I hope my posts don't come off as complaining. I obviously love the site. But it is always difficult to not know what is going on. A fairly big change happened (the links being removed), with the site founder demanding action, and no full answer has been given. I understand that we don't need or deserve a full explanation, but you can't blame us for being damn curious.

I am of the school that this is your community and I am here to serve it. However, while I think you have every right to ask why changes are made, I don't necessarily have the time to answer them all. I am in charge of technical improvements of the site. I don't set policy, and I don't know all the answers regarding it. When I feel that an important issue has been asked that needs to be addressed by IB, I forward it to JuCo, the Community Manager. Some questions I feel are appropriately answered by the Mods, some I don't know the answer to, and some I feel are too trivial for me to give a long winded explanation of.

I didn't believe that an official IB answer was needed. It was answered by Benedict, who is an Administrator, and who's answer I though was acceptable.

I have no problem with your posts, and you have every right to be curious. I believe the reason why there wasn't a reply there is that the discussion was moved from the public forum. Since I wasn't involved with that, I don't have a finite answer.

Woah, totally missed the promotion(?) from mod to admin. Congrats Benedict!

Same here. I mentioned this issue earlier in this thread. It's a minor hassle having to manually bold all films, italicize all magazines and underline all books, but a hassle all the same.

A 500 internal server error is happening a lot.

This is happening when you try to open a forum area, reply to a thread, open the main forum page.

I had to retry clicking 'reply' 3 times to post this here. I wonder if it will actually post.

I can confirm...that was definitely there before. The one in its place makes me laugh.

Ths thread has become rather long and, so far as I can see, the queries raised have been addressed.

If a September version of this thread is required, please feel free to start a new one.

If a "Part Two" is started, I would ask that members reserve it for "new forum issues".

Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation and consideration.
