I'm not suggesting the problem shouldn't be fixed on the DVDTalk side. I'm just offering a workaround in the meantime.

I think adding nags (which is what the ad under the first post in a thread amounts to if it is structured to go away with a paid membership) does take something away... the ability to browse the forum without the feeling of being force fed advertising... and I think you underestimate the value of what that takes away

well duh ;)

I was trying to decide what type of PHP code people would actually post in threads.. that would make that option a good idea

If you were posting monospaced text, like:

PHP Code:

mysql> SELECT username FROM user WHERE type='awesome';
+----------+
| username |
+----------+
| twikoff |
+----------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

yea i understand
it just struck me as funny.. because in the tech forum.. olddude is normally one of the more vocal users against alot of the alt browsers (along with myself)

kilcher 12-05-04 08:52 AM

Well, the HTML tags are for actually posting HTML. I don't know if you could actually run PHP code in a thread. That's why I think maybe it's just for posting the actual code. Not really sure on that one.

Adam Tyner 12-05-04 08:54 AM

You're right -- vBulletin won't process user-posted PHP code 'cause that would be a security nightmare. It's just for posting code (or anything monospaced) cleanly and attractively. Basically a spiffed-up version of the <pre> HTML tag.

Well, I run a site with a similar setup so I can see Geoff's side of it. And even though members can pay to remove ads I view them. They don't bother me.

Other than saying I understand where Geoff's coming from I can't really comment any further. He'll have to address that once he's caught up.

It's possible to ignore posts? Like the post won't even show up for you? REALLY? That seems strange, never heard of such a thing. I wonder how many people ignore me??

Also, it sucks that my old password didn't work. I had to reset it, then go to profile and change it back.

You can ignore users. It's in your user cp with your buddy list (instead it's called ignore list). You just enter the person's name.

You still see where they post but instead of seeing their post you see a link that you need to click if you want to read it.

thats a step towards getting non work friendly

this HAS to be fixed

you also see the title of the adult thread (if its most recent) when youre at the main forum index

that just wont work

kilcher 12-05-04 09:07 AM

I sent Geoff a link on how to remove the adult forum from the "view new post" results. He hasn't implimented it yet but I believe he plans to. I'll look around and find out if there's a way around having the latest thread displayed.

kilcher 12-05-04 09:19 AM

Ok, I figured out how to remove the title for the last thread in the adult forum. Just have to wait until I can get it to Geoff.

Nick Danger 12-05-04 09:20 AM

Either the new font or the layout of the forum pages make it really difficult to read.

Another vote against the blue bars between the posts. I'm having more trouble reading the threads, too, but not as much as the forums.

kilcher 12-05-04 09:25 AM

I'm not sure what the deal with the font is. Looks fine to me. We can probably figure it out but Geoff would actually have to change it.

Nick Danger 12-05-04 09:26 AM

Looking again, I'm pretty sure it's the underscore of every thread title that's making it hard for me to read the forums. Maybe if you thinned or eliminated the underscore . . .

kilcher 12-05-04 09:28 AM

I don't have underlined links on my forum. I'm not sure how Geoff feels about that. Still looks fine here though. I think there's probably another issue. If you post what browser/resolution you're using that would probably help him out later.

twikoff 12-05-04 09:29 AM

is it just me.. or is everything just so damn big

<waiting for first adult reply>

well now that youre done with that..

get to work on this my idea

;)

Not a fan of the ads. The quick reply shouldn't require a button click to use. I'ms ure there will be other complaints as the day rolls along.

I sent Geoff a message and asked that he disable the extra click for quick reply ASAP. I don't know if he's still up. Staying up all night upgrading is mentally draining. He may be napping. :)

ViewAskewbian 12-05-04 09:40 AM

You know, it is like I always say: once something becomes vastly popular and more people hop onto the proverbial bandwagon said something begins to suck. I recall when this place was ad free and a very enjoyable place to visit, the other forum especially. This was before the SUB-FORUM madness. IMO, the Other Forum still isn't fun despite certain implementations to make it so. The community feel of the forum, the small town'ness that attracted me to it in 2001, has been broken down slowly and this last step of the CHANGE is a big one. It is now like a MAJOR city in here with advertising and assholes all over the place. It seems that a lot of threads now break out into some silly argument and each night I am seeing scantly clad women in ads (okay, so maybe that last one isn't such a big deal :p).

Anyway, just my two as a dude that's been here for awhile. As I said, things had been breaking down slowly but this change is like a wreaking ball to the forum and all these little pieces left reminding me how this place once ways, how it could be, are hidden by the new condo being built on the lot and all the crap that comes with it. Ebb and flow is the old line Geoff has used in the past but on viewing the site today I have to say there has been FAR TOO MUCH FLOW and the river it has created is polluted. One just needs to see the post difference in the WHAT WE LIKE and WHAT WE DON’T LIKE threads to know that.

Deftones 12-05-04 09:40 AM

Ok, another big complaint. The color of the links to click on for a thread are similar to the background color. Sure, they are underlined, but's it's too much freaking purple. That's not something I can change in IE, right?

lizard 12-05-04 09:45 AM

Another vote against the blue bars between posts. The post date in white on blue is almost impossible for me to read unless I zoom the fonts up to much larger than I need to read the posts. If the blue bars stay, the post date needs to be enlarged, put in boldface, or both.

Mole177 12-05-04 09:48 AM

this version feels weird.

GeoffK 12-05-04 09:54 AM

So guys. I was up till 3am with the upgrade on the forum. Now after 5 hrs sleep I'm back at it.

I know there are still things to address and I will address them. So be patient.

The issues which have been brought up so far:

1) The blue bars between posts are too dark. - That can be fixed
2) The last post title of adult is showing up on front page - I'll see what I can do to address that
3) Links/underlines are showing clearly - I'll see what we can do
4) Make it so quick reply does require another click - FIXED
5) Min post legnth is too long - FIXED
6) Ads under first post - It's something we're testing so bear with us
7) Search index isn't complete - Still building - has been since last night.

Please help by reporting bugs/errors as clearly as you can so we can address them.

kilcher 12-05-04 09:56 AM

Geoff - I sent you a pm on VB about how to fix #2.

DVDho78DTS 12-05-04 09:58 AM

four

kilcher 12-05-04 09:59 AM

Geoff - Actually what I sent you won't quite work. I forgot about them showing up on the main page too.

The easiest way to do it would be to follow my instructions but the Adult forum would have to be made it's own forum and not a sub-forum.

DVDho78DTS 12-05-04 09:59 AM

Ah! Make the purple go away!

twikoff 12-05-04 10:03 AM

its not as bad
but its kindof girly ;)

Groucho 12-05-04 10:12 AM

Initial reaction upon logging in this morning: too "busy."

DVDho78DTS 12-05-04 10:13 AM

Why can't the post divider be dark blue with yellow text like the links at the top of the web page, or would that look too ugly?

My biggest complaint against how things are right this moment is that the sigs are defaulting to the same font size as the rest of the post. I can't remember how it was on the older version but at least with this presentation, it makes the screen too busy and harder to read.

It wasn't a bug yesterday. And Accessibility Options override specified, fixed font sizes anyway.

FYI. I've started a bug list and am addressing many of these issues:

agreed.

the blue bars between posts need to go.

DVDho78DTS 12-05-04 10:47 AM

There is way too much purple and that bright blue bar between posts hurts my eyes. I always thought the DVDTALK theme was dark blue/grey/white and even a little yellow.
