I remember watching The Undying Monster (1942) last year. I misread the running time, thinking it was running a standard 1 hour and 30 minutes. This one clocked in at 1 hour and 2 minutes.

I wouldn’t consider them all Challenge fare, but all in all, it still looks like a good list.

Well we do have the Family Friendly theme now and most of those would qualify for that.
Plus if you're like me, sometimes you gotta mix it up and throw in some "Halloween-lite" viewings to keep things fresh.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Did we ever come up with a minimum length for a film to be counted as a full-length feature?

The Screen Actor's Guild defines a feature as running a minimum of 80 minutes, but that's certainly a newer development; if that had been the case during Bela Lugosi's career, he'd have only appeared in three or four features by that definition!

AMPAS, the AFI, and the BFI have set the minimum length of a feature at 40 minutes, while the Sundance Film Festival has set it at 50 minutes.

50 minutes sounds like the best to me, since that's slightly longer than most TV episodes that fill an hour-long slot, but is still long enough to be able to count things like Vincent Price's AN EVENING OF EDGAR ALLAN POE as a feature.

What do you think, Chad (and everybody else, for that matter)?

It might be advisable to avoid there being a 'rule' about the length of content since that might beg policing or nitpicking. Like the original post says "Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone."

As a matter of conversation I think the 40 minute target seems fair provided it was developed as a feature; I'm not sure that run time alone is the best qualification for classifying something as a 'film' because some content feels more cinematic or impactful in short run time versus other stuff that drags on and on with fluff. I'm due for a rewatch but remember enjoying the 47 minute long Call of Cthulhu and I know 'It's the Great Pumpkin Charlier Brown' is a challenge favorite at 25 minutes (but Charlie might be featured in special rules).

Personally I track and try to keep my average run time near 90 minutes for my own amusement because there have been times I've found myself gravitating towards shorter content and that keeps me from focusing on film count alone.

Apologies for not having them up when the thread went up. Dealing with the forum nonsense has resulted in not updating everything.

Let me know if anyone else has one.
Thank you for this, and I will have another one specifically for the 2018 subset list coming soon!

Woah! Did I wake up in the twilight zone? (I did have an awesome sorta Harry Potter haunted house Kaiju dream today, but that’s another story.)

The purists are going to pitch a fit, but I’m obviously on board with this idea again.

I’d make it very limited to appease the doubters. It’d only happen about every 7 years, when Friday the 13th falls in September. It’d be for that 24 hours only, no dawn and dusk bonus time. And only actual Friday the 13th films.

Does that mean the list thread will be posted on or before Friday, September 13th? Assuming so, which is nice.

Isn't this called putting the cart before the horse?

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Been mulling what animated movies I can watch for the challenge. Turns out there's enough to cover over half the month. I decided to exclude anime (made an exception for Perfect Blue). If you include anime movies, there's probably enough to cover the entire month.

Constantine: City of Demons (2018)
Coraline (2009)
Corpse Bride (2005)
Fear(s) of the Dark (2007)
Frankenweenie (2012)
Halloween Tree (1993)
Hell and Back (2015)
Hellboy: Blood and Iron (2007)
Hellboy: Sword of Storms (2006)
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Hotel Transylvania 2(2015)
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)
Igor (2008)
Justice League Dark (2017)
Mad Monster Party? (1967)
Monster House (2006)
Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Paranorman (2012)
Perfect Blue (1997)
Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost (2019)
Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost (1999)
Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)
Scooby-Doo: Return to Zombie Island (1998)
The Batman vs. Dracula (2005)
The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (2009)
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
Zombillenium (2017)

I like that... also no list. You pay your money and take your chances. Personally, I'd not bother with that restriction in place as I don't like any of the films in that series but lrend would be thrilled as she completed her collection this year.

I'm OK with it or not - whatever. I might or might not watch something if it's added. Just depends on what else is going on that day.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

I may be overthinking this, but as an alternative, peeps who are not a fan of old Jason could watch other movies that take place on a significant day or holiday (Saturday the 14th, April Fool's Day, Black Christmas, New Year's Evil, My Bloody Valentine, etc..)

I think we discussed having one of these as a theme day in the past. Maybe this could be the "thing".

Or, as a different alternative, instead of watching the exploits of the Voorhees family (or Roy), a participant could watch other movies that center around superstition or bad luck?

Just throwing it out there. I'll be watching a few of the many Friday the 13th films (or maybe some TV show episodes) on September 13 so the alternatives wouldn't apply to me anyway.

I'm going to try to check out a few of those. There's also some others, like Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, the upcoming sequel Scooby-Doo: Return to Zombie Island, and Batman Vs. Dracula.

I knew I was probably forgetting some; I'll put those in and Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost (1999), Scooby-Doo! and the Goblin King (2008), and Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost (2019) as well (you jogged my memory). I didn't realize that Return to Zombie Island had already been released (digitally). The dvd/blu will be available Sept 31.

With the new additions almost the whole month is covered.

Just remembered Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005).

Countering with suggestion of no limits - Friday the 13th is a fun day and the corresponding film series is legendary but it would seem too limited to go Voorhees only... as a former "doubter" myself I think if we're going to break the "rules" we might as well have fun and see what all we can get away with instead of being restrictive about it. Personally I'm going to watch whatever I want and list it (but probably won't start 'counting' until October 1 because still a doubter).

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

I have no idea if this will help anyone else, but the talk of short films got me to run a list on the IMDB of short horror features, then I went looking to see where I could find them streaming for free. All of the following films are either on Archive.org or YouTube. Many of them run shorter than the listed run time, which was taken from the IMDB, so that's just a bonus in my book. I got tired of linking at fifty films, but here are some links if anyone can use 'em:

Maniac (1934) – 51 mins.
Disco Beaver from Outer Space (1979) – 51 mins.
The Devil’s Daughter (1939) – 52 mins.
The Ghost of Rashmon Hall (1948) – 52 mins.
The Rawhide Terror (1934) – 52 mins.
If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? (1971) – 52 mins.
An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe (1970) – 53 mins.
The Beast of Yucca Flats (1961) – 54 mins.
Invasion of the Animal People (1959) – 55 mins.
Blood Shack (1971) – 55 mins.
Ouanga (1936) – 56 mins.
Valley of the Zombies (1946) – 56 mins.
Dementia (aka Daughter of Horror) (1955) – 56 mins.
Torture Ship (1939) – 57 mins.
Man Made Monster (1941) – 59 mins.
Strangler of the Swamp (1946) – 59 mins.
The Vampire’s Ghost (1945) – 59 mins.
The Flying Serpent (1946) – 59 mins.
The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946) – 59 mins.
Garden of the Dead (1972) – 59 mins.
The Last Performance (1929) – 60 mins.
Return of the Ape Man (1944) – 60 mins.
Face of the Screaming Werewolf (1964) – 60 mins.
Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) – 61 mins.
The Raven (1935) – 61 mins.
The Living Ghost (1942) – 61 mins.
The Mad Doctor of Market Street (1942) – 61 mins.
The Mummy’s Tomb (1942) – 61 mins.
Captive Wild Woman (1943) – 61 mins.
Revenge of the Zombies (1943) – 61 mins.
Jungle Woman (1944) – 61 mins.
The Mummy’s Ghost (1944) – 61 mins.
The Soul of a Monster (1944) – 61 mins.
She-Wolf of London (1946) – 61 mins.
The Brain Eaters (1958) – 61 mins.
Criminally Insane (aka Crazy Fat Ethel)(1975) – 61 mins.
Corpse Eaters (1974) – 61 mins.
House of Mystery (1934) – 62 mins.
Chloe, Love Is Calling You (1934) – 62 mins.
The Ape (1940) – 62 mins.
The Monster Maker (1944) – 62 mins.
Voodoo Man (1944) – 62 mins.
Inner Sanctum (1948) – 62 mins.
Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957) – 62 mins.
Spook Chasers (1957) – 62 mins.
Night of the Blood Beast (1958) – 62 mins.
Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959) – 62 mins.
The Headless Ghost (1959) – 62 mins.
Blood Bath (1966) – 62 mins.
Guru, the Mad Monk (1970) – 62 mins.

I haven't seen most of these, so I can't vouch for quality, and I also can't promise that they'll still be available in October. If any of them interest you, you may want to download them now to watch later.

Now that's an extensive list. Can't believe I forgot to use IMDB Advanced Search considering I've used it 10,000 times.

Thanks. I'll put that on the first post when I get the TCM schedule up.

I honestly have no problem with the 40 or 50 minute rule. That said, I'll echo Undeadcow's comment and say we should just stick to the "leave it up to your own discretion" rule from the first post.

The 80 minute SAG ruling is laughable, IMO. That would take a considerable chunk out the 20's - 60's.

Well, my stance it's our 15th anniversary and we've earned the right to do whatever the hell we want.

Although I don't think we should limit it to just F13 films. But if we do, at least don't limit it to just the Voorhees movies, and allow anything F13-related like we had from the previous OHMC13 theme:

Black Cats / Broken Mirrors / Ladders

Definitely. Quite a bit sooner, in fact.

I'm probably a bit too excited for the Zombie Island sequel. I actually yelled out loud in excitement when seeing a clip from the original for the first time in Trick 'r Treat.

Just my 2 cents. We did this once before with Ft13th. I say do 1 bonus film. So people arent logging 11 films prior to the challenge even starying starting. Watch as many as you want.. but count 1.

Picked up The Howling and Humanoids from the Deep steelboxes the other day.
Both of them are a vast improvement over the original DVD's that I bought
years ago. So I'm pretty happy with that pick up right there. They'll be primed
and ready for October.
