You basically suggest a few films that coincide with the themes. There is a list earlier in the thread with movies that have already been selected in previous years.

Subset volunteers should just post film suggestions to match with the theme days on for whatever themes/films seem interesting. Chad will fit one from each subset volunteer's list into the official list of 31 subset films to encourage everyone watch the film you chose on the theme day it's scheduled for, coordinating viewing to encourage discussion.

It might be good for you to be sure to comment on the film in the eventual subset thread if it's one you suggested, but that's not strictly necessary.

Theme list is on post #7: https://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/6...l#post13573263
Subset suggestions so far are on post #9: https://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/6...l#post13573266

I'm trying to find a night to make Brightburn (2019) fit into one of the themes.

And let me just add there's usual a few volunteers left over that I couldn't use their picks due to not having enough themes to sync up with. For those I ask to pick one of the remaining themes left and give additional subset picks for it.

I'll add you to the volunteer list. Thanks, BTW.

That brings us to 6 volunteer spots left.

I highly recommend the three Hammer sets. They're region free and they're limited, which means they may not be around by the time the next sale rolls around.

EDIT: Looks like the international shipping policy has changed and now requires a minimum purchase of £200 for free shipping. Ouch.

I've been watching America Horror Story; into season 3 so far and it does not live up to the hype - I though this show was suppose to be awesome?

That's what everyone says, but I'm on season 4 and haven't enjoyed it at all. I don't see how this show is so popular.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Here are some subset suggestions, mainly based on recent acquisitions or things I plan to watch during the month:

Family Friendly
Wallace and Gromit in Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Frankenweenie
(Technically, neither of these has a horror tag on IMDB, but I think the plots make them qualifying titles)

50 Best or Slasher
Black Christmas

Supernatural/Quiet
Us (haven't seen it yet so don't know which other themes, if any, it might qualify for)
Domnique

Slasher or Halloween
Halloween (2018)

Slasher
Mountaintop Motel Massacre
The Corruption of Chris Miller
Darkroom

Anthology
The Illustrated Man

Heavy Metal
Baba Yaga
Black Christmas
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage

Satanic
Satan's Slave

You guys made it farther than me; the last episode of Season 1 infuriated me so that I swore off watching any additional seasons.

Maybe I need to work on my anger issues....

For me, it's been a little bit of discipline. Someone at my job challenged me to watch all seasons because I was always left out of their conversations. They are apparently huge fans of the show and would discuss it ad nauseum. I've found that one episode a day is about all I can handle. So, I try to watch one a day before I reward myself with something I actually want to watch. I feel like I'm on some kind of rite of passage. I mildly liked the first season, but even it had its problems. Seasons 2 & 3 were mind-numbingly boring to me. To me, there's a difference between "horror" and "weird for the sake of being weird".

This was my problem with America Horror Story, instead of tension or atmosphere the show jumps the shark with some distractingly odd deus ex machina introducing elements then dropping them to rotate to some other jarringly out of place element leaving one wondering why suddenly there are demons and mad scientists in the alien plot which started as a slasher, which maybe sounds awesome but not all in the same episode without really developing any of it.

I've never seen an episode of America Horror Story, but the new season being a slasher at a camp has me interested. I'm tempering my expectations now.

I agree. For me, that's just the first part of it. The second part is that I don't like any of the characters and spend most of my time hoping a comet crashes out of the sky and kills them all. No one is likeable. Everyone is a scheming or murdering douchebag. Connie Britton's character was the closest thing we got to someone to root for and she checked out after Season 1. So, far, I'm on the Freakshow season on episode 4 and still haven't found a character to latch onto.... Jessica Lange is a great actress. People heap praise on all of her performances. Golden Globe and Emmy nominations... and I guess she does do a good job with what she's presented. But her acting skills don't change that she's somehow able to polish a turd and rake in the rewards. Up until now, I thought I was the only one who felt this way.

[In American Horror Story] Kathy Bates in season 3 seems to be wasted in a role there solely to hurl around 'shocking' racisms. I sometimes enjoy gorey 'extreme' movies but I guess American Horror Story makes the point that there's got to be some appeal to emotions to maintain tension. It would probably be better for them to have under developer characters then for them to have tried to tack on 'bombshell' revelations about how everyone is a jerk to the extreme because the love story between the pathological witch and the serial killer isn't really pulling at anyone's heartstrings.
