Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
I also don't care for American Horror Story. I thought the first season was fine, although it didn't scare me personally, but it had some nice atmosphere and mystery. Season 2 was promising but there was just so much going on and there were too many scenes of mental/physical torment, it was just too much for me. Interesting that a group of people who binge horror for an entire month can't seem to stomach a show specifically trying to cater to horror fans. Watching some of the more difficult/violent films in previous challenges, such as Inside, were fine for me because they were well executed and it's only 90 minutes or two hours long. AHS felt like 10 hour long episodes of misery.
Though I admit I am intrigued at a season dedicated to the 80s slasher style.

As much as I love 80s horror when modern shows/films start getting that transparent with homages it's usually a sign of the end times and creative bankruptcy. Make a modern slasher instead of some awkward nostalgia raping "throwback." I cannot think of a lot of stuff that's successfully executed flashback slasher vibes, other than maybe Summer of 1984 (which I haven't seen but is on the pile in 34 day).

You people are falling for their trap. Watch some actual 80s slashers instead.

Now, Summer of 1984 was pretty nice!

I’m a witch in real life, so Coven intrigued me. When I saw it was on Netflix, I decided to try it out. I didn’t make it through the first episode before turning it off.

Watching television episodically is 'so' 1990s. American Horror Story needs to get with the times if that's what their problem is, but I suspect there's more to the shows' problems than that.

Subset update!
This is one of those rare years I've been able to fill all spots up to this point without asking for more picks. That means we can jettison the next round and go right to the final phase.
In other words...
The final 10 will pick one of the unused themes (or I can assign you one, whatever you prefer) and give subset picks for it. It's really that easy.
I just need to quadruple check the current list and should have the final round up tomorrow. Hopefully we can knock this out and get right to the checklist ASAP.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Here are some subset suggestions, mainly based on recent acquisitions or things I plan to watch during the month:
Family Friendly
Wallace and Gromit in Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Frankenweenie
(Technically, neither of these has a horror tag on IMDB, but I think the plots make them qualifying titles)

I'm not much of a binge-watcher. I don't think I was watching more than two episodes at a time. It's been a few years but I remember finding the 2nd season less entertaining and more of a chore as it went on.

I would suggest Gremlins for Family Friendly Horror. Available on Netflix.

If some feel that Gremlins doesn't fit this please let me know. I have no kids at home now but as I remember Gremlins it seems to fit very well.

To give a choice, Vault of Horror for Anthologies is on Shudder.

Gremlins is horror enough in my opinion. The swimming pool scene is a thing of beauty and the Gremlins can be nasty. I re-watched it was my kids one of the challenges and remember being surprised how much things have changed because a lot of what Gremlins has in it would not fly in today's PG rating; apparently this was before PG13 was a thing and it shows - but I'd rather have kids traumatized by seeing Gremlins than kids who have never seen Gremlins.

Chad, can we see the movies that have made the cut so far so we can start looking for them?

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Gremlins would be a fitting choice considering it's the 35th anniversary of the PG-13 rating, and that's one of the films that was responsible for its creation.
Sorry, but I can't reveal the list until complete. The reason being is nothing is truly finalized until I post it. I just want people to pick what they truly want and not be influenced by other choices. That said, feel free to use other suggestions from post 9. Of course, if you do so, it's always a good idea to give more than one subset pick for the theme you choose in case it's already on the list.

And speaking of One Cut of the Dead, it's supposed to be up on Shudder sometime this year. That's according to Rob Galluzzo of the Shock Waves podcast. Of course it's already on Blu-ray in a few countries.
