After seeing that Jurassic World was on one of the HBO channels, it got me in the mood to watch Jurassic Park, since it's on Netflix.

I know you have a lot more knowledge than I do, so I'm sure you're right! I did check at IMDb, though, and they have him down as a writer. I know they can often be wrong. But, I hope I got my point across. I kind of (admittedly incorrectly) group Studio Ghibli as being made by one person and they are a lot more diversified than that.

Thanks for the feedback! I think this may be the way to go myself.

It seems that no matter what type of list there's always *something* that forces me to watch a film I'd not planned on, or repeat one of the few qualifying titles I own when I'd rather watch something else. For those reasons I purposely avoided them in all of the challenges this year and enjoyed my viewings, as well as the challenges, more as I wasn't obsessing over what to watch next that would also fulfill a checklist item. I *may* add a few back next year but am undecided at this point.
I started off that way, but after a few challenges where I just didn't see anything I wanted to, I now tend to not focus on the checklist until the end, where I'm through the stuff I had planned and wanted to watch, but still want to watch something. I let the checklist guide me at that point. I've definitely found stuff I really like that I never would have watched because of it. But you're right, there a few checks where only a few things qualify and you end up watching it every year even if you don't enjoy a film.

Anyone else want to chime in? I am definitely leaning towards making the checklist all "watch x amount of y list."

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I just finished a first time viewing of Disney's Tarzan. I got a copy because it was offered recently for a fairly low redemption from the Disney Movie Rewards site. I'd never considered it simply because it's a newer Disney title and I don't like them as much as the pre 1965 output. Other than the modern pop music (which I very much disliked as it's Phil Collins, a artist I don't care for) it was a pretty good effort. At least there were only 3 songs in the film so I wasn't pulled out too much. I'd have enjoyed the animation better had they not used "modern" animation techniques (i.e. computer generated with a more "realistic" look) for many backgrounds or treatments and done them classic style as the characters were done. Story wise it's pretty much Tarzan Disneyfied and more enjoyable to me than many newer Disney animations. There are a couple of scenes I think could be somewhat scary for the under 7 crowd. Edit out the songs, which don't add anything of merit to the story, and you'd have a very good film.

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

Thanks to the discussion here, I finally opened my Disney BD set of Hunchback of Notre Dame and watched them both. I know in certain moods I probably would have hated at least the second, but I am in a "everything is awesome" mood lately and thoroughly enjoyed both. The first is obviously superior, and both would have been better with less Jason Alexander.

I have some Disney movies I bought recently I'd like to watch some time this month on Google Play. I recently bought Pocahontas, The Black Cauldron, and The Fox And The Hound. I also have some movies from the Disney Movie Club I never got around to watching.

mrcellophane -- unless I'm misunderstanding something, I don't think this is correct:

51. Kubo and the Two Strings (Theodore Reed, 1937 / United States / 2D)*

Oh dear! Theodore Reed directed Double or Nothing, a 1937 Bing Crosby film I watched yesterday morning. Note to self: don't edit list when you are tired! Thanks, coyoteblue!

On a related note, I did see Kubo and the Two Strings, a 2016 film directed by Travis Knight, yesterday evening. It was absolutely spectacular, and I appreciate that Laika infuses their stories with weirdness and complexity.

lol. Somehow I'm not surprised you feel that way about the songs! I quite like them, to be honest, but then again, I do like Phil Collins in a vague sort of way. I love that Jane is a strong character as well in this.

Still haven't seen the 2nd, but I just can't enjoy the first that much. I gave it a re-watch last year, I think, and it still does nothing for me. I appreciate that Disney tried something a little darker, especially after the fail of The Black Cauldron but I think they went a little too far, especially with the dancing in the fire scene.

The Black Cauldron isn't that bad. I was disappointed that it didn't really hold up to the books, but when does any movie? It is dark and I think that that was the main reason people didn't like it, especially since Disney isn't known for that. Pocahontas and The Fox and the Hound along with the previously mentioned Hunchback of Notre Dame, are my three least favorite movies. I have them because I couldn't NOT have a complete collection, but I doubt I'll watch these again unless someone requests them. That being said, if you haven't seen them at all, you should watch them. Just take them with a grain of salt.

I've been debating about which movie to see this week, either this one or Pete's Dragon. I was leaning towards Pete's Dragon as I am curious how badly they messed it up but the previews for Kubo look pretty good. You may have changed my mind!

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

As far as the Challenge question goes, I'm fine with it the way it is. I think I am one of the few (?) that attempts to finish it for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Animation, Horror and Academy Awards challenges. For me, I find that completing it really helps me to find different things that I would never watch that I normally end up enjoy very much. I try extremely hard to only watch movies that I haven't seen also, which helps and I find it enjoyable to search for them. Having said that, I am fine with any changes that you want to make, they don't prevent me from watching movies that I want to see so it is all good. I appreciate all the hard work that is put into running these challenges and don't want to make it harder on anyone.

One of the beauties of the "X of Y" philosophy is that the OCD among us can still do all Y.

If you do see it, let me know what you think! I'm planning on seeing Pete's Dragon at some point. The original was oft watched by me and my siblings when we were kids. We would double feature it with A Goofy Movie for reasons that are beyond me!

Also, I'll warn you that if you do see Kubo, you will be compelled to listen to Regina Spektor's cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on repeat. I'm watching some Disney silent shorts, and I'm a bit tempted to mute the provided score so I can continue listening!

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

Will do! Both Kubo and Pete's Dragon are definitely on my agenda, but if I do see it tomorrow, I will share how it was.

orlmac, I don't plan on removing any of the check marks at this point! I am leaning towards combining some of them and having people complete a certain number of them to complete the list.

I would definitely be open to adding to the list as well if anyone has suggestions.

Tonight, I popped in the second season of Back to the Future. I can see why it didn't get another one. This season seems to be all about Marty and the youngest son, Verne, with little focus being on Jules, Doc and Clara. I'm not enjoying this season near as much as the first one.

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

This month, I decided that I wanted to watch all of the animated features in my unwatched pile. I'm down to five movies, so it's very doable! Before the month ends, I need to watch:
  • Paprika (only one I haven't seen before)
  • Turbo
  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
  • Akira
  • The Animatrix
I would also like to finish one more animated TV box set. At the point, TaleSpin vol. 3 or Junjo Romantica season 1 are the most likely picks.

I have Batman: Gotham Knight, Batman: Year One, Justice League: Doom, and Justice League: War animations coming... hopefully they'll be here before the challenge ends.

I watched Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 early in the challenge and thought it was cute. I'd watch again. Very easy watch and the fruitimals are adorable.

At this point, I don't know if the Criterion Collection Challenge is happening or not, but if it does, Akira would be eligible for double credit.

Thanks for the info! I'd forgotten that Criterion released it.

Went to this tonight. A bit off topic so I'm going to spoiler it.

Spoiler:
It's definitely not a remake of the original Pete's Dragon. The only similarities are there is an orphan named Pete who finds a dragon and there's a jerk who wants to use the dragon to make money. The settings are totally different, the way Pete's an orphan is totally different, the "family" that finds him is totally different. Even Elliot is not the same. Elliot is probably my least favorite part. If I had never watched the original, it'd be fine, but a furry dragon who looks more like a mix between a dog and a cat than a dragon just didn't much for me. The movie itself is very slow paced. It was almost an hour and 50 minutes long. They take a lot of time setting up Pete and Elliot, which is fine, but it's not very attention holding.

There's also some not subtle logging vs environmental jabs in the background plot.

It's a cute movie but I don't know that I'll make an effort to see it again or even add it to my collection-maybe if it's cheap enough on Black Friday. Maybe. So, I guess it's worth seeing, but wait for the cheap theater or bargain day like I did.

Everyone should listen to Regina Spektor anyway. "The Call," "All the Rowboats," "Oh Marcello," "Don't Leave Me"...

You're right, and it isn't terribly subtle, but at the same time it's kind of relevant to the plot - it loosely explains both how they've remained hidden and why they're found now. If not for people being where they ought not be...

That is true. Still, I wasn't that impressed with that plot line. It felt like something that would have been done in the 80s, like they updated it but only so far.

Since a couple of you mentioned the music of Kubo, Pete's Dragon had a pretty good score. I don't think I'll rush out to buy it, but Lindsey Stirling does at least one song (she's a violinist). Nothing too exciting but I'll probably buy at least one or two of the songs. I also have to admit I recognized the actor who played the brother-in-law, Gavin, but couldn't place him until I saw his name, Karl Urban. D'oh! Bones!

I hadn't watched Gargoyles in a while, so was just in the mood, so popped in a DVD. I just finished 'The Silver Falcon', a Dracon episode. Always enjoyed those.
