I own "The Lion King", but always have trouble bringing myself to watch it.
Spoiler:
I just find it so sad that Simba spends so much of the movie thinking he was the reason Mufasa died, and letting Scar take over Pride Rock.

I love all the songs, but you're right. It is a sad movie. I do feel like it's kind of fast paced, happy songs mainly, but it's such a sad subject matter... so they make you sad, then happy 2 minutes later with the next song.

Re: 5th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

While most of my viewing has been Disney (my goal this month was to focus on their animation), I've branched out a little to complete the checklist. Last night I watched "Waltz with Bashir." I had tried to watch that a couple years ago but just couldn't get into it but managed to fully watch it this year. I did enjoy it but it is such a sad topic. I think it was well done, though the animation style was different than what I'm used it-it actually worked well with the topic.

In fairness to Big Mama, I think she had hoped that if a friendship was forged early that it might overcome the training later. Things actually did play out that way in the end; Copper let Tod go when he had him dead to rights. It was only the accident with Chief that turned things. If not for that, who's to say how long they're able to sustain their friendship?

I have that entire series on DVD, waiting to be logged. I might try to make my way through it in the second half of this month.

I think if I was pressed to give an example of the potential power of animation, I would pull out that film. Like Art Spiegelman's Maus, there's something about handling such horrific real-life events through the prism of animation that somehow makes it hit differently than real life footage. Not harder, necessarily, just differently.

I have the entire series too. Watched the two part arc that featured Lobo last night. Brad Garret did a good Lobo.

As I'm watching movies with puppets, models, stop motion, etc., I'm having fun watching how their scenes are edited. You also start noticing errors, such as the Tunneler from Puppet Master drilling into a guy, then he pulls him out but Tunneler has not blood on his drill. There's also the issue with a guy that either bleeds blood or green chemicals, depending on the scene but that's a different story.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 was another perfectly acceptable film. My wife and son who saw it felt it was better than the first one. I can't say I agree with that, necessarily, but it definitely was another good entry in the series.

I was pleasantly surprised by Megamind which looked like a tired concept with Will Ferrell at his most over-the-top. But I really loved it and thought it was very funny and unexpectedly moving.

Good way to get a jump on horror month as well! I bought the set of puppet master movies last October but didn't get around to watching them. Maybe I could slip one in this month!

Re: 5th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

I watched a random episode of Pokemon: Indigo League and Batman TAS this past Friday.

On Saturday, I re-watched Kung-Fu Panda and it was as enjoyable as before. I love that movie and I usually don't like Dreamworks animation but it's absolutely beautiful on Blu-ray.

Now the double bill was Cars 2, a movie that I haven't watched before. I'm a fan of the first movie. I like it but I'm also aware that it does not compare to the other Pixar greats but it has it charms. However, the sequel on the other hand...
The good thing is the animation. The PQ and AQ of the Blu-ray is phenomenal. The movie itself however, I didn't like. First of all, there was too much Mater (way too much), something that kids probably liked but man, as an adult, that was painful. Second of all, I thought the shooting and killing of "cars" was inappropriate for a movie that's marketed to younger kids. I know for a fact that parents show the movie to kids ages 4 and up. Also, I felt that Michael Caine was replaying his role of Nigel Powers in this movie along with the bathroom humour. This may be the worst Pixar movie IMHO! I hope is not just me becoming a grumpy old man...

watched The Snowman the other night on my new DLP projector - oh the bluray looked absolutely lovely, albeit some cropping of the image from it's original 4:3 AR to 1.78

RIP Robin Williams. One of my favorite comedians. I watched Robots to start out this challenge. His voice was always so expressive and you always knew who he was. I was going to watch Ponyo tonight, but I think I' going to watch Aladdin instead.

There's also Happy, Happy Feet 2, Aladdin King of Thieves, Fern Gully, A Wish for Wings that Work, and an episode of Faerie Tale Theatre if you're looking for something that'd qualify to watch.

Had no idea what I was going to watch till I saw the news. So Aladdin it is. RIP Robin Williams.

Too bad I don't have any eligible titles for his memory. He was a great man, and very kind. I guess he just had his own personal demons, which I can relate too, as I have been hospitalized for depression in the past.

Re: 5th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

Until late July, I had no idea that the Cartoon Network was running "Attack on Titan." So I started recording with the 12th episode. (How do you find out about these things? How do you get alerts when new anime series suddenly show up on TV?)

So I watched episode #12 last night, the first one I've seen from this series, which I've been hearing raves about for the past year. It's about a squad of young soldiers protecting their walled city from attacks by "titans," infantile giants who come in different sizes and ages and can swallow people whole (which doesn't necessarily kill the one who's swallowed) and get killed or neutralized pretty easily. It's a bit bizarre for my tastes, set in a somewhat abstract universe, and I'm not sure I want to explore it more just yet, especially when I have so many classic series I'm very enthusiastic about that I haven't finished yet, e.g. "Rose of Versailles" and "Armored Trooper Votoms."

Streamed some of the original Transformers late last night. The action is pretty rote, but the humor at times is sharp. I still dig the Dinobots. For instance:
"Slag, Sludge, go away! Me, Grimlock, demonstrating finesse. Whatever that mean."
—Grimlock, "Dinobot Island, Part 1"
I could have an entire thread about the differences between the original cartoon and the Marvel Comics, especially their respective portrayals of Grimlock.

I hated how in Season 3, Grimlock was reduced to a comic relief character.

That's pretty much all he was all along, really, especially when contrasted with his comic book counterpart. Comic Grimlock was a no-nonsense, ruthless hardass.

Re: 5th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

Watching Frozen right now. I enjoy the movie, love the music. I like the twist at the end-I admit the first time I saw it, Disney did get me with the twist. I was expecting something but not that. The rest in spoilers just in case someone hasn't watched it yet.

Spoiler:
I am glad they are finally moving away from the princess always needing the Prince to succeed. But there is one thing I've thought the 3 times I've watched this movie, the parents brought this upon themselves by making Elsa terrified of her power. Rather than have her learn how to use it responsibly, they shut her up in her room, have her spend absolutely no time with other people, including her sister, and make her so fearful that she can't control her emotions/power. Elsa is never allowed to practice it, so when she needs to, she has no idea on how to do it and has to learn the hard way. Also, by excluding her from people, and not allowing her to go out anyway, she has to be overwhelmed and feeling really nervous about big spaces and being in public-which when her emotions are connected to her powers is a bad thing. And, what about the trolls. They seem very helpful. They knew how to fix Anna, so why wouldn't you ask them for advice on how to teach Elsa how to use the power?

So, that part always kind of annoys me as the whole situation could have been avoided, which, I know, would make the movie a little boring, but yeah.

I see there is at least one person focusing on puppets and stop motion. Do those count? Or do they fall under wild card? I have The 7th Voyage of Sinbad that I meant to watch last month.

Well, I'm going by what is in the rules since this is my first time hosting-I know that puppets and stop motion are allowed (rules mention Harryhausen by name). So I would think that the "7th Voyage of Sinbad" would definitely count if it's the one I'm thinking of. I do hope that while watching these, the viewer is keeping in mind that this is an animation challenge so make sure the movies qualify. Also, people do have one wildcard.

I took all my stuff off the list in case it wasn't in the "spirit of the challenge" anymore. Doesn't mean I'm still not watching that stuff.

First, if you haven't already, head to YouTube and watch the "How It Should Have Ended" version of Frozen. Hilarious!

Second,
Spoiler:
most speculation and editorialising - based on what is shown to great degree, but also extrapolated - is that the parents thought they'd sequester her briefly to help her gain some level of control, training or suppression. But she, being terrified that she might hurt her sister, went that step further and locked herself in her room out of fear and worry.

What I wonder is whether Hans is always as nasty as he turns out, or whether his "change" is due to the Trolls' "that's a minor thing/her quote "engagement" is a flex arrangement.." meddling to get her with Kristoff...!
