For VHS Classics in HD, here's a good source of what company released what back then
http://www.critcononline.com/video_c..._cover_art.htm
This got an option to search by VHS company
http://www.vhscollector.com/
or by clicking IMDb's Distributor option
http://www.imdb.com/company/co0030983/?ref_=ttco_co_24
For watching movies on the same day it was released back then (click month/October, then click year)
http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/
As for newspaper movie ads, there doesn't seem to be a definitive good website. Best option is to google.

Chad, any chance of doing the 50th anniversary thing for a theme night again?
Here's a list of some of the horror movies released in 1964:
I was also going to suggest films from 1939 (75th anniversary) and 1989 (25th anniversary), but there are too few of the 1939 films for even a checklist entry, and, while there are a few excellent ones, the majority of the 1989 entries suck balls.

And you weren't kidding about 1989! The only memorable ones that really come to mind are Society, Pet Sematary, Santa Sangre, Intruder, Pumpkinhead and maybe a handful of others. Not to mention the MPAA was pretty unforgiving in the late '80s.
I don't know, last year's extra day in September for Friday the 13th didn't exactly get a lot of support. Personally I like the idea as I'm a sucker for seasonal films. In fact, I've watched a few summer-themed titles while getting this ready and the genre ones are pretty abundant. I realize the intention is to watch them as it's actually happening, but at the very least how about having a possible summer-themed theme nights, uh, theme? Just summer camp slashers alone would provide more than enough titles.

Getting very excited for October. I've barely watched any films since last October, so I'm jonesing for some TV time. Tonight I've pulled all my Criterion Horror titles out for some cross-Challenge binging in just over one month!

The Possession of Michael King is surprisingly scary for a new Hollywood release. An actual R-rated film aimed at true horror fans. I mention it because a dog does get killed.

I hate to be that guy but I checked the FAQ and unless I overlooked it, I was curious if The Twilight Zone would be considered under this challenge? I usually stick to straight up horror movies only and try to stay away from TV shows but I got that BD set awhile back and need to crack it open.

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

I like black and white when it comes to this challenge. No gray for me.
So if anyone wants to give an opinion, please do. It has been awhile since I have watched any Twilight Zone so I honestly remember some being spooky or scary but I didn't know if they had enought episodes like that where the show would be considered as horror.

I'd consider Twilight Zone horror.

It's an episode by episode basis. The Dummy is horror, while The Whole Truth is not. I am sure most count though, as there is some element of horror.
