Instead of some of the more rare Special FX people... perhaps "Watch a movie with effects from someone who is a judge of Faceoff"

I like that show, but don't watch it enough to know who the judges are. Are they famous in their field?

I like this one. I've done this several times in the past, based on trailers or posters. I hate it when I see a trailer for a double feature later in the month after I've already watched one of the films.

I had to look up Face Off myself; but it seems like the rooster has a nice collection of people. Technically, since TV content and documentaries are allowed just watching Face Off itself should count too.

Main judges include:
Glenn Hetrick - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0381761/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t2
Ve Neil - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0624763/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t3
Neville Page - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2342403/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t5
Patrick Tatopoulos - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0851281/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t6

Some/relevent guest judges [not sure if intended in suggestion]:
Lois Burwell (2 episodes) - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006627/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t71
Greg Cannom (2 episodes) - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0134148/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t73
Greg Nicotero - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0630524/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t75
Tom Savini - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0767741/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t86
Steve LaPorte - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0478867/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t80

Re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2014 Horror Challenge

Not much on the suggestion front but I wanted to share that I watched Frankenstein- the original and The Oculus 32 minute short film in the features part of the disc this past weekend. It just got me pumped up a bit for the upcoming horror challenge. Got me thinking about it, even though it's a little more than a month away.

I think sometimes it would count... but there are plenty of times when it isn't horror related. (i.e Alice in Wonderland, Sci-FI, and Angelic competitions).

Re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2014 Horror Challenge

How about "Man's Best Fiends: Canine Horror Flicks"? Cujo, Man's Best Friend, Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell, Dracula's Dog, White Dog, The Pack, The Breed, etc.

Or if dogs aren't anyone's thing, how about "Things with Wings: Flying Horror"? Lots there, including The Giant Claw, The Swarm, Q: The Winged Serpent, The Birds, The Deadly Bees, and approximately 700 gazillion more.

Or Aussie horror? Have we done that one before? Filipino horror?

Pet Death is one of the horror movie tropes/clichés I'm going to keep track of this year. I saw a movie last year where the pet didn't get killed. I think it was The Lords of Salem.

Sorry for the lack of communication as of late. I've been working tirelessly to get the thread ready to go, and now there's a very distracting Simpsons marathon working against me.

Theme Day: "Vestron Video Classics in HD" or releases put out on vhs by another specific big or small video company back in the 1980s that are available on Blu (or DVD).
Or maybe watch a movie on the same day it was first released (in October) years ago (for example "The Sender" October 22, 1982 ==> watch it October 22, 2014).
Also fun: double features based on old newspaper drive-in/movie ads.

Anyone find a link for this one?

doesthedogdie.com

Unfortunately there's not much in the way of more obscure horror. Not even Cannibal Holocaust.

And I have this new theme id ...never mind.

Re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2014 Horror Challenge

Also, somebody brought up the idea last year of having a few "best of" themes where we'd vote on our favorites since this is the 10th anniversary. So if there's any particular ones you wanna see return name them and we'll go with however many. Of course it's all dependent on how many of the new ones we use. And the same goes for the checklist.

Re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2014 Horror Challenge

I've been away from challenges this past year, but I'm getting excited for this one. I have several ideas on the brain (most of which I will probably abandon once life gets too busy as it ways does). I have a few Halloween/Horror "events" going on as well... Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare and Midnight Syndicate Live at Cedar Point. I'm also working in Pasadena, CA for 4 days in mid-October. I'm hoping I'll have the money and time to head to Universal Studios and/or Disneyland to join in on their Halloween events. At the very least, I hope to visit the Halloween shooting locations again at that time.

This got an option to search by VHS company
http://www.vhscollector.com/

or by clicking IMDb's Distributor option
http://www.imdb.com/company/co0030983/?ref_=ttco_co_24

For watching movies on the same day it was released back then (click month/October, then click year)
http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/

As for newspaper movie ads, there doesn't seem to be a definitive good website. Best option is to google.

Re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2014 Horror Challenge

Chad, any chance of doing the 50th anniversary thing for a theme night again?

Here's a list of some of the horror movies released in 1964:

Spoiler:
At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul
Black Torment
Blood and Black Lace
The Blood Drinkers (Kulay Dugo Ang Gabi)
Castle of Blood
Castle of the Living Dead
Cave of the Living Dead
Children of the Damned
The Creeping Terror
Crypt of the Vampire (aka Terror in the Crypt)
The Curse of the Living Corpse
The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb
Curse of the Stone Hand
Devil Doll
Dr. Orloff's Monster
The Earth Dies Screaming
The Evil of Frankenstein
Face of the Screaming Werewolf
The Flesh Eaters
The Gorgon
The Horror of It All
The Horror of Party Beach
I Eat Your Skin
The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies
Kwaidon
Lady in a Cage
The Last Man on Earth
The Long Hair of Death
The Masque of the Red Death
Nightmare
Onibaba
Strait-Jacket
The Time Travelers
The Tomb of Ligeia
Two Thousand Maniacs!
Witchcraft
Wrestling Women Vs. the Aztec Mummy

I was also going to suggest films from 1939 (75th anniversary) and 1989 (25th anniversary), but there are too few of the 1939 films for even a checklist entry, and, while there are a few excellent ones, the majority of the 1989 entries suck balls.

Devil Dog: Hound of Hell isn't a bad demon flick for a television movie from the late 1970s.

I'll second that.

One could do a Criterion to Horror Challenge crossover by doing White Dog and then Devil Dog, Embryo, or some other doggy film.

We could do a Dog Days of Summer today and have the horror ones count for October.

While not dog centric, another horror film that features a demon dog is Bones.
