Quote: Not sure if I'm going to watch anything for the Criterion crossover. I plan to watch Rosemary's Baby for movie night with friends. I know that Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein are both available through Netflix, but they look... odd. And since I'm never watching Salo, the completist in me know I'll never watch everything Criterion has to offer.
Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein are two of my favorite Criterion horror flicks. I usually watch one of them each year for the challenge. When I first watched FfF I thought it was trashy, bizarre, and low budget. It wasn't until Udo Kier came on screen and demanded to know if his Igor had cleaned his test tubes that I started to crack up and realized what the movie was going for.

The films are pretty gory, but also campy and humorous. They also have some interesting thematic elements under the surface, especially Blood for Dracula, which is essentially about class warfare. Udo Kier makes these films and his performances as Frankenstein and Dracula are extremely entertaining and memorable. Blood for Dracula is probably the better film, but they are both worth a watch.

Quote: Brinke Stevens was recently on the list too, yes?
Thought so too, but no. In fact, quite a few of those names are bringing up a feeling of deja vu.

Quote: Instead of naming a specific actor/actress maybe listing a category for them would work; i.e. "starring a musician."
Love it, although we'll have to wait until next year to implement it.

How's this for actors? The possibility exists I might have snuck in a few myself:

Spoiler:
Select 10 actors:
--- Karen Black (R.I.P.) -
--- Elisha Cook Jr. -
--- Tina Krause -
--- Elissa Dowling -
--- Jessica Cameron -
--- Angus Scrimm -
--- Dee Wallace -
--- Fay Wray -or- Edward Van Sloan -
--- Jefferey Combs -
--- Ivan Rasimov -or- Robert Quarry -
--- Brinke Stevens -
--- Ray Milland -
--- Boris Karloff -
--- Ingrid Pitt -or- Virginia Wetherell -
--- Katherine Isabelle -
--- Bradford Dillman -or- Donald Sutherland -
--- Tony Todd -
--- Asia Argento -
--- Conrad Veidt -or- Dwight Frye -
--- Bruce Campbell -

A healthy mixture of past and present, eh?

Or just view the entire checklist, which appears to be complete.

If everyone's satisfied with the results I'll plug it into a table, add some hyperlinks and announce it on the Facebook page.

Looks good

I've been on holiday the last few days but in my quiet times I was busy working through what was ready in the checklist to make a plan for next month :P

I just noticed that Elissa Dowling stars in a movie called Vaginal Holocaust, which is apparently a rape revenge movie about a man eatting vampire nether-region. I think I know what to watch on oddball theme day if I can somehow locate this in time.

...which is not to say her other films don't look awesome, like Bloody Bloody Bible Camp (streaming on Amazon).
Quote: Well I like to play video games in my spare time, so to coincide with the challenge I'm going to focus just on horror video games for the month of October, I was just curious if any others were doing the same...
Having a slower speed laptop but enjoying older games anyway, I'll probably play some I Have No Mouth and Must Scream or Zafehouse Diaries this October.

The checklist looks cool, can't wait to get this challenge started in about 4 days not that I'm counting or anything ... I plan to start with the silence of the lambs and the devil's backbone for the criterion crossover probably.

The official official checklist that's plugged into a table and with all the helpful links resides here. All optional lists are now complete ...the nightmare is over!!!

But seriously, let me know if any further changes need to be made.

And I should also mention that the majority of hyperlinks used were from the IMDB Advanced Title Search function. Apparently they only list the 'most popular' films for each artist, whatever witchcraft is used to determine that. For example, it only lists 19 entries for Tina Krause when there's actually 66 through the 'Filmography by Genre' list. I didn't realize there was such a discrepancy between them, so check the main profile pages for their full filmography.

Chad,

Some discrepancies exist between the checklist in post #652 and the checklist posted on the first page of the thread. Specifically, the differences that I found are:

Sub-genres/types: "Pick 35" on page 1; "Pick 30" in post #652
Decades: "Pick 10" on page 1; "Pick 8" in post #652
Ratings: "Watch a film for each" on page 1; "Pick 4" in post #652, which also has the GP and M ratings not on Page 1.

I'm not trying to be a pain; I'm just trying to figure out my watch list.

If I watch at least 1-2 movies a day amongst my busy class schedule, I will be ridiculously happy!

I'm retired, but even though I have family obligations, I plan to go all out. Going for 100 this year.

I'll definitely be aiming for 100, plus theme nights (at least one appropriate film per day), and subset films. Not sure about the checklist yet for this year but we'll see how it goes.

Can't wait for the Horror Challenge to begin. Maybe I'll try to see if I can find any horror criterions online, even though my Hulu Plus sub has run out. If Not, I'll just start dipping into some horror to whet my appetite.

Do you have Netflix? I know Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula are both streaming there. If not you should be able to find some of the older silent films on youtube such as Vampyr.

Have only been watching a couple films a month lately, but always try for 100 in October.

I'm tempted to ignore the checklist and themes and just watch things that I've been putting off for years; but I'll likely give in to my OCD and follow along as usual.

Planning on Se7en for Criterion crossover to start.

The coffee pot will be on a lot during October, as I might even be pulling some all nighters

Weeks ago I started watching unwatched(somewhere over 6,000) things on my shelves, just going in alphabetical order. I'll probably keep doing that, only skipping the non-horror items and not even touching anything in binders until I watch everything on the shelves first.

This coincides with the massive cleanup of my theater room, which still had boxes of stuff from when I moved in around 5 years ago. Putting together numerous shelves which had been purchased over a year ago, I set those up in the hallway and filled those with the kid stuff That let me take 3 shelves out of the theater room.

After getting things organized alphabetically, I spent the next couple weekends changing how I wanted to order stuff before finally being satisfied. I've mixed in my DVDs and blu-rays together. The next section is the few distributors or companies that I collect and have no problem blind buying from(Full Moon, Mill Creek, Brentwood, and Something Weird Video). After that is the TV section, including made for TV movies and season sets.

I've shifted all my seating around and raised my projector so you can move and sit more freely without worrying about a head or a cat casting shadows on the screen. I threw up some signed posters that have been sitting around and have been putting up more posters, trying to cover the walls of the A-frame. I also moved my scary dolls and toys, as my kids put it, more organized and not looking so cluttered. Basically it was a huge, late spring cleaning event.

I still have some rope lights I want to setup but I'm finally pretty happy with how it's turning out.

Like last year, with more time spent in the room, we're hearing more noises. A couple weekends ago it sounded like some cable was being played with by a cat behind a shelf and scraping along the back. My oldest daughter was in there at the time and blamed it on one of the cats but when I went to check, there was no cat there and one had only just walked into the room right before I went to check.

Now we're at a point where my wife won't go in there anymore. Nobody goes in there by themselves, including me, but it's already been that way for years. That way when stuff happens there's always someone else there as a witness.

A few weeks before that, I heard the sound of a little kid running around downstairs. Problem was that it was 5am and the little kid that runs was sleeping in bed next to me. He's the one that does that and makes that exact sound and it definitely wasn't one of the cats.

My plan is to focus on my unwatched material -- that's basically been my focus every year that I've participated. The good news is that I expect to finally complete the task. I have about 20-25 things on the DVR and around 50 BDs/DVDs which qualify. It only took 7 OHMCs to get to this point.

This year I plan to *finally* watch the Universal Horror films in release order. I've said that for several years but I'm determined to actually do it this time.

I've limited myself on horror purchases to help but there are still 50 or more unopened horror films left over from prior years plus a few new ones I couldn't resist picking up since last October. Now I just have to make it through October without caving and making any horror film purchases... I can do it... It'll be easy...

Why is it this challenge always seems to bring out the paranormal occurences?

Yeah, I remember you mentioning this last year. Maybe your Full Moon replicas are possessed?

But seriously, set up some cameras throughout the house like they do in the found footage films and try and get some solid evidence.

For me, it's all about the power of suggestion. Living in an older apartment building with two cats (one who loves to climb on stuff), odd and unexplained sounds are a part of everyday life. However, during the witching hour, October, or the night after watching a scary movie, I'm convinced something is up. I can work myself up into quite a little frenzy.

This is one of the reasons I had to stop reading true crime books. I remember one particularly bad couple of days when I was sixteen after binge reading books about the Zodiac killer; every shadow was the lurking killer, poised to gut me. It all seems silly the next day when the sun is out!

However, I'm also a fan of H.P. Lovecraft (check out awesome quote on my list) so I also know that it is quite possible evil forces are out there, but I will myself not to make those connections and comprehend the horror out there. (spooky)
