Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I've been busy lately, as I plan to go back to school, so the last couple days I have been researching school and filling out applications. I should be able to get back to the checklist in a day or two.

Well, decided I couldn't wait anymore to whet my sci fi appetite, so I just watched Serenity on Showtime.

This may be the exception to the Trek challenge for me. I watched the series for the first time in January for the TV on DVD challenge but didn't get to the movie. I kind of feel like I should watch it fairly soon while I still remember the details from the show.

How about Lloyd Bridges for one of the actors? I found at least 4 scifi/fantasy movies that he's in and you can find them either on Netflix or Amazon.

Sounds good, I'll add him, probably tomorrow when I work on the checklist.

I've updated some of the actors on the checklist. Thoughts anyone?

I'd suggest moving Natalie Portman to the "Joey Wang/Maggie Cheung/Gloria Talbot" line. Joey Wang & Maggie Cheung look to be primarily foreign film actresses (correct me if my research is incorrect) possibly making them difficult choices and Gloria Talbot has only 4 qualifying films. The half dozen qualifiers from Natalie Portman would make that line a bit easier for most to complete.

Off the top of my head:

Joey Wang Hong Kong fantasy films:
A CHINESE GHOST STORY 1-3
PICTURE OF A NYMPH
SWORDSMAN III: THE EAST IS RED (a must-see)
THE REINCARNATION OF GOLDEN LOTUS
THE LEGEND OF WISELY
THE EAGLE-SHOOTING HEROES
GREEN SNAKE (another must-see):

Maggie Cheung Hong Kong fantasy films:
A HEROIC TRIO
EXECUTIONERS: HEROIC TRIO II
FLYING DAGGER (she plays "Flying Cat")
MOON WARRIORS
HOLY WEAPON
THE EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES
GREEN SNAKE:

See GREEN SNAKE, where they play the snake sisters, White Snake and Green Snake, and you kill two birds with one stone.

I own twelve of the movies listed. Doesn't seem that difficult to me.

I own none and my local library, even though it has access to the whole state's system, has exactly one. And quite frankly, I'm not going to go blind buy something I probably wouldn't enjoy that much. In other words, it's difficult! I had problems with that one last year as well, if I remember correctly.

Don't worry, I was only showing off. (I'm a big fan of both of those actresses and acquired most of those films when it was much easier to find these things, first on VHS and then on HK import DVD.)

In any event, you've still got the Gloria Talbott option. If you can find I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE or THE LEECH WOMAN, you won't regret it.

Coincidentally I'm wearing my Serenity T-shirt today!

Spoilered for reveal of movie dialogue:

I'm going to bet that a lot of those are on youtube, if that helps.

A little bit, but not really. I have an old laptop and I can barely make it through 2 or 3 minute shorts much less a full movie. I'm sure I'll be fine with it-I made it last year, but I was just pointing out that not everyone has the same access to some films. I like finding new actors and actresses but for some, it is hard to find content that's accessible. That's why I am in favor of putting a bigger name with smaller ones, so that if the smaller names can't be found, you can fall back on the bigger name.

That's why I added Natalie Portman to that line as Bob O Link suggested.

I know! I thank you for that because it does help a lot.

I was more responding to coyoteblue who said they had no problem with that. Just trying to show that there were people out there who did have problems.

I have a quick question. Is there a reason the actors are presented in clumps? Would it be possible to make a list of actors and stipulate that you should watch films featuring so many, setting it up like the checklist for the March Action/Adventure challenge?

I just used the same format for the checklist as Mister Peepers used last year. However, I could do it as you suggested.

In theory, the grouping can be setup with similar actors/actresses so that people end up being pushed to watch a wider variety or films, often times, forcing you out of your comfort zone. You could have a group of asians, one for more recent performers, older ones, etc. Then if you only can find one out of the group, you've still hit that type of film that the group is setup for.

That's partly why I suggested moving Portman to the line with Talbot and the 2 Hong Kong actresses. All are women. Had Talbot been a Asian actress I'd not have made that suggestion so as to keep the theme grouping intact.

-EDIT-
I just took another look at the list and it now has only 3 names: Joey Wang/Natalie Portman/Gloria Talbot with Maggie Cheung having been dropped.
