Seriously, that could pretty much (and has) shoot down any argument over an "alternate" translation or as Andrew mentioned a more "literal" translation.

Also the film was well loved during it's release and I still feel that many would've picked up on the subtitle differences immediately.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

Here's a fake letter I wrote a few days ago for another site. Reading a similar one a few pages back encouraged me to post it here. I haven't even bought the movie but it was fun to write. I will purchase the updated one, however. Feel free to send it haha.

Gentlemen and Scholars,

I would like to thank you on your recent release of "Let The Right One In". As I understand, there are disgruntled idiots out there that are dissatisfied with the subtitles that you used for your release. I, for one, am glad that you put these anal retentive aficionados in their place. If they want to watch the movie with the "original" subtitles, they can easily find the movie on a bit torrent site for free. Myself, on the other hand, enjoyed the newer subtitles because reading them didn't make my brain hurt. As an added plus, it was like watching a whole new movie! Why would I want to spend $20 on a movie that I already saw? The new subtitles really bring an American flair that makes the movie seem more original than ever before. It's too bad others are too stubborn to see this and I'm glad to see that their foreign-loving cries are falling on deaf ears. The only complaint I have is that the title of the movie should have also reflected the newer, much improved, subtitles. What the heck does "Let The Right One In" mean anyway? Better titles would have been "Come On In" "Welcome, If You're The Right One" or simply "Hey".

Anyways, good luck in your future endeavors. I'm really hoping you can grab the rights to some other foreign films and make them easier to understand for people like me. Thanks!

Wow. Just wow. That letter from Magnolia is seriously jacked. Those "bloggers" are most of the people who bought this title on Day One, and without us they wouldn't have gotten most of their sales. I'm planning to burn my copy and send it to Magnolia in a box filled with feces.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

I was thinking of sending an email that said something like:

"Thank you for doing the exchange program, I'm so happy. This is the correct address to mail the disk too, right? [insert magnolia's address here] I hope so, because I mailed it out earlier today."

I think it is customary for retailers to return products returned to them as defective to the vendor for credit. This would stick it to Magnolia directly, which is why I went that route instead of selling it off. My guess is Magnolia won't refuse crediting Amazon given how big they are - they can't risk alienating that outlet for their product.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

I don't know if you guys saw this, but Andrew Frank of Mongrel already responded to the person that received the e-mail I posted.

First the person replied to him.

Thank-you for your quick response. However, I must say that Magnolia's reply is quite disconcerting with it's name-calling and odd rationalizing. As for me, I simply just want to own the film I saw in the theater. For example the line where Eli says she lives here, "in the jungle gym", is priceless, and to omit it seems inconceivable. And there are many more examples. So, my final question to you is: will Mongrel, too, be making the theatrical subtitles available in future? Until then, I will not be purchasing the dvd.
And then, Mr. Frank replied with

Hi, John - I too, was pretty surprised by Magnolia's reaction. I didn't know that they were planning to issue a different version of subtitles on the DVD; they never disclosed that to us. In any event, we will release the new version in Canada as soon as it is available with the theatrical subtitles. I can certainly appreciate your desire to delay your purchase until that time
So at this time, it is unsure, maybe Mongrel will be nice enough to offer exchanges (Doubtful), but at least he recognizes that is not how someone should speak to their customers.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

Andrew may have not been aware of Magnolia's decision to release another DVD down the road, but Mongrel Media was.

I contacted Mary Harmer, Manager of Production, Home Entertainment about this on March 24 and updated her with what Magnolia is doing about it.

Her initial reply:

Hi Christian.

I share your frustration but unfortunately the subtitles arrived to us already burned into the Master provided by Magnolia and the price would have been prohibitive to have them replaced. I do not know what motivated Magnolia’s decision but we were not a part of it. Hopefully someone at Magnolia will get back to you to explain.

Thank you,

Mary
At least she knew about Magnolia's plans as of last week.

Wow, I am responding alot in this thread.

It's funny that they didn't let the Andrew know that...

I just decided to fire off another email to magnolia...I have it saved as a draft though, I'm debating if I should send it or not.

Yes the bloggers are having a field day on this one. Normally they like to pick on the English Dub tracks, but in this case it’s the subtitles. Obviously online tend to get rowdy and bandwagon mentality without knowing all the details. The current subtitle track is not altering the context of the film at all, in fact it’s a more literal translation than any prior version of subtitles. It’s not a defective or faulty subtitle file. Just more literal and larger in size for the small screen. Both English and Spanish subtitle files were produced for this dvd release. Frankly it’s not all that uncommon to have the subs vary from prior releases, typically go unnoticed as subs are purely a translation of film dialogue. This wouldn’t have been a blip had it not been for one particular horror blog doing a side by side and claiming that they are wrong. They are not. We are not doing a recall or anything of that nature, again, these are not defective. Title came out two weeks ago and general public don’t notice and don’t care – bloggers are well known for jumping on something, making an issue of it and moving on. We have decided that based on the feedback that we will be making a running change, so that going forward (once inventories deplete), we will be making that subtitle version available. Options in set up will be; English Subtitles / English (theatrical) Subtitles / Spanish Subtitles”
I think your PR person is asleep at the wheel.

P.S. I would be picking on the dub track if it was the only option on the DVD...its atrocious.

hmm, has anyone actually seen the dvd? It looks interlaced and has pixellation issues (see start of chapter 5 for instance). Take it none of those are going to be addressed in the reissue?

powerdvd shows combing, looks ok on hdtv though. pixellation is definitely there every now and then. chap 5 start is a good example, screen breaks up for less than a second but you can see it.

"Title came out two weeks ago and general public don’t notice and don’t care – bloggers are well known for jumping on something, making an issue of it and moving on."

If they really felt that so few people cared about it why not just exchange those couple of peoples disks to make them shut up?

I haven't bought this yet but now I am going to wait for it to be released in another region.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

I'm sorry if I give a damn about what the director brought up to the screen not being translated well. Their issue with the subtitles totally make the film a much different creature. Yeah, the general meaning is there..but there was a lot of stuff that was small with great detail that totally created a great world for the film. The current subs totally made the film like a vampire flick that tried to be artsy but just was weak in it's depth.

It's sad that Magnolia hasn't responded to our e-mails or the numerous comments on the tons of blogs and websites that picked them up.

Good to know that Magnolia won't see another dollar from me; but at least a thank you for The Signal on Blu-ray.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

Well, I'm just glad I caught this film in a movie theater. One more reason why it's not always worth waiting for a movie to come out on DVD to see it.

So now we have to wait for the Criterion release with "improved subtitle translation" a decade from now, give or take... if they're still even making DVDs or Blu-Ray discs then.

Well, magnolia IS fixing the subtitle issue, but they're NOT offering a replacement if you already purchased it. As I said somewhere, either in the BD thread or in here, once the subtitles are corrected I'll probably import it from Canada instead of giving magnolia more money.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

Just received this response from Magnolia. No surprise, really...

Thank you for your inquiry regarding Let the Right One In. In preparing the disc, we incorporated a more literal translation of the Swedish dialogue than the one contained on the theatrical version. Several fans have informed us that they would like to see a future manufacturing run containing the original theatrical subtitle file as an additional English language subtitle option on the disc, which we have agreed to do. As the current disc contains a completely accurate, literal English translation of the film’s dialogue, we are not offering exchanges for the original discs.

Best regards,

Magnolia Home Entertainment

Why do they insist on describing their subtitle translation as "literal"? How can completely leaving some sentences untranslated be considered literal? It's insult upon insult with these assheads.
