I rarely ever write to DVD studios because, on the rare occasion that a major technical error arises, most are quick to remedy the problem and offer a replacement disc for consumers who have already purchased the title. I am one of your customers who purchased a Blu-ray copy of Let the Right One In the day it came out, March 6th.

Thank you for your time,

I'm liking everyone's emails, but I thought that maybe us dumb Americans should dumb it down for Magnolia. I'll use part of Killer's letter as an example.

Love the "I'm trapped" idea. I'll try to creatively work it into my letter a few times.

I guess people are getting upset cause they are making a new version of a disk and not offering a free replacement program. Maybe they should just cancel that plan so they wont have to deal with this...
Its not like this is the first time subtitles have been shitty on a foreign film here in the states....
One thing I must ask is why cant people who own the copy take it to the nearest store that has this dvd and exchange it for the new corrected version?

Your rationalization for things baffles me.

This doesn't bother you, a real legitmate problem with a DVD, yet you get pissed when someone doesn't do a commentary or a film is under two hours.

Friggin' bizarre

LOL!!! Great stuff.

Not sure why some folk begrudge us trying to get a corrected disc. And I certainly don't want to mess around with some hokey BD-live fix. Corrected copies of the disc itself is the goal.

If you haven't written yet, please consider doing so!

broken english drives me crazy... ugh

if you haven't yet opened the blu-ray, I advise you don't, and if you can return it, do so.

Maybe I will to see how bad it really is.
I didn't see it in theaters, so the Blu-ray was my first viewing of this and I had no problem with the subtitles conveying the story. They're not bad enough that they will make you dislike the film (good enough to get it into my all-time top 10), unlike the atrocious voice-casting on the dubbed track. I'll be getting the new disc regardless and see if it can make me like the film even more, if it's even possible.

Ha. Good one. A few people should definitely send them a "dumbed down" letter, only to note at the end that they wanted to make it easier for their reps to understand.

Well, I bought mine at Walmart and found my receipt for it yesterday. I am seriously thinking about damaging the disc (since it's opened) and returning it. Is that bad? I'll rebuy it when I find the corrected disc, but I don't want to get stuck with 2 copies of the movie.

They will only let you return it for a new copy. While I won't comment on the ethics of doing that, it would be best if you wait for the new version of the DVDs to come out and then exchange it for the one with theatrical subtitles.

What will they do if there aren't any more copies in the store? I think there was only one left when I got mine.

Your issue isn't with Walmart, it's with Magnolia.

You didn't buy a broken item, nor did you buy a traditionally defective item. The disc has incorrect subtitles - this is the way it was made. And it was made by Magnolia.

Walmart - and most stores - have a policy about returning opened movies/cds, and it's usually an exchange for the exact same item. Makes sense to me. You can't necessarily expect Walmart to accept returns because the English subtitles don't match the original Swedish language.

My guess is that you'll have better luck pulling monkeys out of your butt than convincing a retail drone that you need to return an open movie for a full refund because the subtitles are not the same as the theatrical version. Good luck with that.

It's your call whether your time is worth the aggravation that most certainly is going to come with that.

Me? The disc was $19. The movie was excellent. And as miffed as I am about the subtitle issue, I'm directing my energies toward Magnolia.

I'm hanging onto my BD, with the hope that maybe down the road Magnolia will do the right thing an offer an exchange program once the "right one" is released.

Yeah, but they already said that they weren't going to do an exchange program. I've got the impression that they don't really care about the problem.

Could a new subtitle track be released via BD Live? If so, Blu-ray owners should pursue that.

Let The Right One In is not BD-Live enabled.
So yeah, it's possible, but not on this title.

If the bad publicity keeps up, they'll likely change their tune. The amount of money it would set them back is nothing compared to the potential damage to their reputation.

The assumption is that these will make it into the retail channels anytime in the near future, if at all. It isn't like this is going to be a huge seller. While most retailers probably didn't order many copies to begin with, I still find it highly unlikely that most will run through their stock of the first pressing anytime soon. In the cases where they ordered a few copies and sold them, the replenishment will occur before corrected discs are pressed. Without this being a recall, you've got a Superman Returns with PCM audio situation on your hand. A new version of the same SKU may be floating around, but it's not gonna pop up in stores until the retailer exhausts their current inventory AND re-orders. If the current inventory isn't depleted before they decide to give up the shelf space "Let the Right One In" currently occupies, you're not gonna see the corrected copy in stores. Best Buy has a more of a shot of one day carrying a "good" coppy than some place like Wal Mart.

No matter what, it turns into a scavenger hunt.

This whole thing boggles the mind. Isn't it safest just to put the theatrical version on the disc instead of having someone retell the story in their own words?

Or they can just go with no dubbing and do the route that Pan's Labyrinth did...

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

Well, at this point I think it's not going to happen. I hate to say it.

At least the Canadian distribution company is a little more caring about their fans and sent out a copy of the "corporate" e-mail that Magnolia sent them about the issue. (Because they just used whatever elements Magnolia gave them.)

Here is the e-mail from the canadian distribution company, Mongrel Media

In response to your inquiry, Mongrel used the same source material as Magnolia for both the DVD and blu-ray versions of this film. So the same subtitle issues apply to Canada as to the US.

Here is Magnolia’s official response to this issue, which I received last Friday:

Yes the bloggers are having a field day on this one. Normally they like to pick on the English Dub tracks, but in this case it’s the subtitles. Obviously online tend to get rowdy and bandwagon mentality without knowing all the details. The current subtitle track is not altering the context of the film at all, in fact it’s a more literal translation than any prior version of subtitles. It’s not a defective or faulty subtitle file. Just more literal and larger in size for the small screen. Both English and Spanish subtitle files were produced for this dvd release. Frankly it’s not all that uncommon to have the subs vary from prior releases, typically go unnoticed as subs are purely a translation of film dialogue. This wouldn’t have been a blip had it not been for one particular horror blog doing a side by side and claiming that they are wrong. They are not. We are not doing a recall or anything of that nature, again, these are not defective. Title came out two weeks ago and general public don’t notice and don’t care – bloggers are well known for jumping on something, making an issue of it and moving on. We have decided that based on the feedback that we will be making a running change, so that going forward (once inventories deplete), we will be making that subtitle version available. Options in set up will be; English Subtitles / English (theatrical) Subtitles / Spanish Subtitles”

Thanks again for contacting us, and for your continued support of our library!

Sincerely,
Andrew Frank

That letter needs to get published on the all the blog sites as well so it can further incite people.

The cavalier attitude is bad enough, but why the hell change the subtitles at all if it's not a mistake or incorrect? Total hypocrite. And no "literal" translation makes up for the embarrassing "I'm trapped" line.

I'm glad I returned my copy to Amazon for credit. I doubt I'll ever repurchase a domestic copy now. I'll probably wait for some other import to pop up other than the Swedish release which doesn't have lossless on the Blu-ray.

Sounds like Andrew Frank is missing the point, but I guess that's just my "bandwagon mentality"....

EDITED:
My mistake - clearly Andrew Frank isn't with Magnolia. I misread it.

Well, Andrew Frank is the guy up in canada who sent this. He has no control over what Magnolia did.

Anyway, I sent a copy of this over to Bill at The Digital Bits.

Fuck Magnolia.

I might go ahead and try what you did, bunkaroo. I'd kind of feel bad about passing that on to Amazon, however.
