I got this in the mail from CH today. I took the discs out to check them and they looked fine, so I put them back in the case. I just went back to them to take them out again to watch a minute or two of each DVD and sure enough, I already have scratches on mine. This is absolutely inexcusable horseshit. I am extremely careful with my DVDs, and like someone mentioned before, I also removed them with surgical precision.

I should have just keep the DVDs out of the packing and stuck them somewhere else instead of putting them back into this horror of a DVD case. I tried to put them in thin plastic CD cases but they wouldn't fit back in the case, so I decided to just put them how they originally were.

Huge mistake.

I don't think it's bad enough that they wont play, but I don't see how it'll be possible for these to remain protected after being removed/replaced in the original packaging. If another DVD set of this flick is released, most people will be forced to double dip simply because the originals no longer work.

They would do this to my favorite film of 2007.

Ugh.

What if you put the disc in the slot upside down? If what's causing the scratches is what I think is causing the scratches, this should work, right? Rubbing up against a smooth surface shouldn't scratch a disc.

My Best Buy already had numerous copies with slit packaging and discs stolen. Kudos Paramount. Where is my Blu-ray release?

I was going to do a blind-buy, but didn't. At Best Buy the two-disc special edition was "on sale" for $22.99, and yet the regular price for the standard edition AND special edition was...$22.99; no difference in regular, non-advertised pricing. That and the packaging immediately turned me off from the blind-buy. I'll wait it out 'til it gets cheaper (and is actually on sale) or a better re-release hits the shelves.

I think that I've just come up with a very easy and obvious solution to the disc problems that everyone's been having. This fixes both problems: disc scratching and difficulty getting the discs out:

EDIT: I just got There Will Be Blood today, and it didn't work.

If you can't get a decent copy without scratches, complain to Paramount. Enough complaints, they might do something about it.

A double digipak tray is the solution, atleast for me. I took such a tray from a discarded case, glued it to the middle page of the TWBB foldout, and everything even fits nicely inside the outer sleeve.

Good idea, but then again, I'm not a big believer in having to buy something extra just to provide basic protection for a product I already spent money on.

I wasn't planning on buying this, but I noticed this at Best Buy and Target today and couldn't believe how shitty the packaging was. I can't think of any reason why they would use something like that. Also, I can't help but think casual movie goers who might have bought this on a whim would be confused too considering how thin and cheap it looks on the shelf.

I also didn't see 2-disc versions at both places. They seemed to be sold out.

I think a 3-Disc set makes perfect sense now; a lot of people will buy this release, then months later hear of the three disc and the doc and will want to buy it because they want insight into the film.

I'd also wouldn't be surprised for the three disc to have a directors commentary despite PT Anderson saying he wouldn't do them anymore.
If this were the case Paramount would be following the precedent they set with Babel (another critical darling albeit less deservedly so than TWBB). They released a single-disc version 2/20/07 only to re-release a "Special Edition" of the film almost exactly 7 months later on 9/25/07 that had a 2nd disc containing an extensive making-of doc. Of course I hope a) that doesn't mean it will take roughly 7 months to get TWBB on Blu-ray and b) that unlike with Babel (HD), the Blu-ray of TWBB will come with the extensive making of featurette.

Paul Thomas Anderson isn't going to sanction another release of this film. Isn't anyone wondering why the extras on the 2nd disc are so thought out and deliberately sparse? It's because PTA has final say on how the DVD is produced... just like on the Boogie Nights 2-disc, the Magnolia release, and the Punch-Drunk Love release, the latter of which had the same style of barebones film on one disc, sparse extras on the other type of release. There's not going to be another release of this film, folks need to get over that now.

I just want to know that this is for sure the only edition. I imagine it is, but want confirmation.

When has a company ever confirmed something like that?

At least with Sin City I knew to wait. Zodiac too.

Blu-ray aside, I seriously doubt TWBB will get another release.

The idea is not new though. I posted the same thing last year with the Futurama: Bender's Big Score cardboard case (which can be "fixed" with equally great result).

I picked up the 2 disc today. The packaging isn't the best, but I don't think I'll have a problem keeping this scratch-free. I don't think this is the kind of film I'll be pulling in and out to watch a zillion times.
