It wouldn't kill me if "The Best" series didn't get released, but I really hope/wish they release the decade documentary.

Is there a listing of Pride releases and what DVD's they can be found on anywhere? I know thats kind've vague but I remember those Legacy sets and didn't know the breakdown on them.

Re: The Official MMA DVD Discussion Thread (UFC/Pride & Other)

For some odd reason, Most major online outlets have removed the release date for the next UFC release, which is supposed to be UFC 94-St. Pierre vs. Penn. Amazon has it as a "not yet released" instead of the date, which it once had and Best Buy/Walmart & UFC.COM don't even have it listed

*update*
Walmart.com has a release date for 12/31/09....WTF? that can't be right....can it.

Apparently there was some deal about BJ & GSP getting paid extra royalties from the Primetime show provided it was on the DVD. It wasn't on the original pressings and thats the issue right now. Sucks, I really wanted that release today.

YMMV: The local Best Buy to me (Paramus, NJ- fashion center) broke street date for Pride 31 with an MSRP of $14.99

Re: The Official MMA DVD Discussion Thread (UFC/Pride & Other)

I traded in a ton of cd's and got over $200 in store credit at FYE-ended up with the rest of the UFC titles I needed, now I've got the complete collection of 59-93. Not to worried about the 56 and prior titles, after the Hughes/Gracie PPV, the company peaked, obviously the best stuff to watch is from 06/07/08/09.

If I find the Pride dvd's the new ones, that is, I'll be grabbing them as well.

How long have you been into the sport? From the ZUFFA buyout on, there are many fantastic events prior to UFC 56...even some solid stuff during the latter days of SEG.

For example, UFC 43 was considered to be THE quintessential UFC event for quite some time...and I'd still put that event up fight-for-fight against some of the best events of the last 4 years...lots of other excellent events from 2003 as well.

Ditto for PRIDE...much of the company's legacy was built on events such as the 2000, 2003 and 2004 Grand Prix contests and the amazing Shockwave events...not to mention their other events were top notch as well.

If you aren't familiar with PRIDE....let me put it this way: Many of the "Pride guys" of the current UFC peaked during 2003-2006...and their prime performances are must haves for MMA collectors and fans.

Re: The Official MMA DVD Discussion Thread (UFC/Pride & Other)

As the years go by and MMA moves completely from "which art is better" to a coherent whole, I wonder whether the early years, the current years, or some future period will be seen as the best era for the sport. I imagine that will depend on what you want to see.

The early years really did set up one art against another, leading to phrases like "a classic grappler vs striker match", but already we see the thirty-and-under fighters all sporting strong grappling and striking games. Guys with strong striking and black belts in jiu jitsu are increasingly common.

Take some current examples:
- GSP - known as the best wrestler in MMA, but has black belts in Karata and Jiu Jitsu
- Machida - marketed as a karate expert, but actually has sumo wrestling and jiu jitsu credentials as well

You don't hear about those guys, or any of the young up-and-comers, having a one-dimensional game. They are likely better at one aspect then another, but they are well-rounded. I have high regard for the MMA pioneers, but doubt in their prime they would have won out against the modern champions, just because they were/are too one-dimensional.

As for Pride, many of their stars aren't doing as well in the UFC, even the younger ones where age isn't a factor. Wanderlei Silva is getting knocked out regularly (I hate to see it - he's a great guy), Henderson's human blanket routine is boring, Crocop has largely served as other people's highlight reel, and so on. Anderson Silva has had a stellar UFC career, and Rampage may get back to the top, but that seems to be about it. The cage vs a boxing ring, the different rules and the drug testing seem to have reduced the once-great wildmen of Pride.

I have seen some of the UFC's early years, and a few Pride fights, and am surprised the sport lasted. The current configuration of rules and skills is far more entertaining than the early stuff, which largely seemed to amount to two guys punching each other, or the suspense of wondering if the fat guy would knock out the thin guy before the thin guy secured an arm- or knee-bar. I heard Rogan say crowds used to chant "gay" whenever a grappling match broke out. Wow.

Anyways, this was a lot longer than I meant it to be - next time, I'll just say "I agree that the current era is better than the first, except that it is good to know where the sport started".

I really got into MMA during TUF2 (let the name calling begin LOL), enjoying the show, it got me out there to actually buy and view UFC 43-56 on DVD (ended up selling, long story), had a good number of Pride DVD's (incl. 4-5 Bushidos) and even some KOTC, so I have had a taste of the good, a little bad, and some ugly, not to mention I was picking up the Classics during the time period UFC wasn't releasing any current DVD's because of the dispute with their DVD distributor or whatever it was.

I should restate myself, I didn't mean to slam pre 58 UFC, what I meant was, for my money spent, right now I would rather watch what I have, 59-93, rather than continue going back, and back, considering they really piqued during the time frame. No doubt about it, I'll have the complete UFC catalog one day and I"m sure I'll enjoy the older shows as well, but it's always great to watch the rise. Especially since this is the time of "dream matches", or so called dream matches, with UFC owning pride & wec as well.

And I know about pride very well-no one puts on a show like Pride did. It's too bad they ended up on the WCW side.

Anyways, my next pickups planned are TUF seasons, when later today I sell more of my cd collection. I really enjoyed Season 1 (on dvd), 2, 3, The comeback, Pulver/Penn, and Serra/Hughes seasons, and look forward to seeing the ones I missed as well.

So yeah let's keep this thread up'd with good discussion. If it's anything like the wrestling thread we'll have some good conversation like over there.

Welcome to the thread, the more the better....

Looks like they are more focused on trying to build their brand before they jump to home video. Some wonder if they will even be around after there 3rd event. So we'll have to wait and see. I'm more interested in seeing when Strikeforce will start pumping out dvd's, they seem to have a better business model. I know sherdog released a few earlier strikeforce events, but nothing on a national level.

Good point. I'd also love the Strikeforce events. I avoided the EliteEX releases because we all knew they weren't gonna be around with that business model. But the things I really want are some of the recent "Dream" events on DVD.

Re: The Official MMA DVD Discussion Thread (UFC/Pride & Other)

For some odd reason my local best buy has total giving up on selling new pride dvd's, So off to amazon.

And Amazon.com has a interesting release schedule for upcoming UFC ppv dvd's. UFC 94 is back on schedule with a new date of july 21st, like some one posted earlier, but...what strikes me odd is how fast they seem to be pumping out there ppv's.

UFC 94: St-Pierre v. Penn - This title will be released on July 21, 2009.

UFC 95: Sanchez vs. Stevenson - This title will be released on July 21, 2009.

Ufc 95 & 96 - This title will be released on July 28, 2009. (Price: $13.99)
**Possible Mistake, could be**

Ufc 97-Silva Vs Leites - This item will be released on Aug 4, 2009.

UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine - This item will be released on Aug 18, 2009
**?why does 97 come out before 96, unless the double pack is true**

Ufc 98-Evans Vs Machida - This item will be released on Aug 18, 2009.

Ufc 99-Franklin Vs Silva - This item will be released on Sep 8, 2009

My best buy had done that for awhile but they put out Pride 31 a week early....weird.

I really hope Amazon's dates are right.....its pretty stupid how long it takes them to get the events out at this point. 6 months is waaaay longer than they need to author, manufacture, and ship them out.

Jeez, That sucks. You think they would leave that stuff in considering they hyped the footage a few months back w/the rematch. No sense and very disappointing but I kinda knew in the back of my head that would happen.

Re: The Official MMA DVD Discussion Thread (UFC/Pride & Other)

I snagged Pride 32 & 33 at a not-so-local Best Buy, since the local one doesn't carry Pride dvd's anymore. The only other 2 this location had were Bushido 10 & Critical Countdown Absolute (Which I'll end up buying). It looks like FYE doesn't carry Pride dvd's at all anymore, I guess I'll have to do the online thing (which will probably end up cheaper in thelong run).

Right now my collection is:
UFC 59-93
UFC Best of 2008
UFC Couture vs Liddell Triology
UFC Fight Night
UFC Iceman
UFC Ultimate Comebacks
TUF Season 1-4, 6-8
Pride 31-33

*Waiting for TUF 5 to arrive in the mail.

My current wants are:
UFC 58 and before (Including Classics)
About 60+ Pride DVDs LOL.

Re: The Official MMA DVD Discussion Thread (UFC/Pride & Other)

It looks like the real reason for the UFC 94 delay had more to do with their contract with the previous distributor First Look Pictures having expired. Something I always had in the back of my mind (That's what happened to UFC57) but figured that kind of news would have been announced earlier by the UFC, but anyway, The UFC struck a deal with Anchor Bay Home Entertainment and they will be handling the distribution of their license going forward. It also looks to be the reason why Amazon has a shit load of old UFC titles being re-released (no idea if new material will be included) and why the release dates for the UFC newest ppv's are coming at a shorter time span. I assume they want a more WWE like release timetable. Anchor bay being a bigger company could probably give them that.

Re: The Official MMA DVD Discussion Thread (UFC/Pride & Other)

MMA Fans I saw a number of UFC DVDs at BIG LOTS today for $3 each.

I cannot remember all of them but I think it was

UFC 50, 51, 53, 54 and several different "Best of" and Knockout Collections.

There were also a number of "off brand" MMA DVDs in there as well for small promotion shows. Can't remember any of them and none of them appeared to be too special but figured I would mention it anyway.

You really have to dig around for them but they are there.

Re: The Official MMA DVD Discussion Thread (UFC/Pride & Other)

Best Buy still isn't listing UFC 94 for release. Yet they have cover art for a combo package that puts UFC 95 /96 in the same case. Strange.

I'm going out tomorrow if I get the chance to check my local Best Buy to check for UFC 94. Hope they have it.
