I like how you dismiss the Schrader and Kolker commentaries and five featurettes (all of which sound interesting) as mere "fluff."

And I don't think there's much point in licensing the Criterion commentary. Granted, I've never heard it before, but I imagine most of what was said will be repeated in Schrader's commentary, plus whatever he and Scorsese discussed in the old documentary, not to mention the new "Martin Scorsese on Taxi Driver" featurette.

Anyways, I'm definitely picking this up. Not only because Scorsese's my favorite director, but also because I'm in the process of making a website about him and his movies. At this moment, I'm poring through several books, articles and commentaries for information, so any possible new info gleaned from this new set will be appreciated.

Granted that might end up being the case, but I can think of more than a few examples where information featured on one commentary doesn't appear on or is presented in an inferior manner in a later commentary that features the same (Criterion vs MGM commentaries for Robocop) or nearly the same participants (the Criterion Bond commentaries vs the MGM ones). I'll be picking up this DVD regardless, but if the LD commentary is a real gem, I'd be willing to lay down the scratch for it.

I'll double-dip for this release.

Woah, settle down! If you're gonna quote me at least quote me correctly! I did NOT say the new commentary would be "fluff", I called the "featurettes" "fluff."

See, pal..?

"Featurettes" very often are. That's why they're called "featurettes". Especially after the fab 70+ minute documentary on the previous disc!
Is that whole documentary going to be included as well? it was VERY thorough. Seems like if it is, there will probably be alot of redundancies.
Also, have you ever heard Schrader talk? Especially now that he's older? He honestly sounds like he has marbles in his mouth and is rather dull. At least with the old commentary track you would have Scorsese himself 1/2 the time and even if a tad hyper, is very easy and fun to listen to.

My point is, this is now a triple dip just for R1. I already own 2 versions.
Why can't they release this on BD already? I assume they are using a new transfer for this, yes? If so, probably made from a new HD master.
If they're not and this is simply the previous one again, it is inferior to the japanese SB version.

"This is another case of image VS extras : if you know which one you prefer, you'll know right away what version to pick. The Superbit offers a much better image quality : apparently mastered (hopefully in HD) from another source than the Collector's Edition (CE)..."

Hey, it's my opinion. Don't know why you're so challenging of it. I'm not trying to change yours. This works for you, fine, knock yourself out. No need to be snitty and foolishly quote me incorrectly.

So lemme get this straight--a commentary from Schrader but NOT from Scorsese?

Correct. Scorsese does provide a video introduction, though.

Hence the continued interest in the Criterion LD commentary which DOES feature both Schrader and Scorsese. Video intros are nice to have, but none that I've ever seen are anywhere near as comprehensive as a screen-specific commentary. Moreover, the interplay between participants often makes for a very different experience than when each is recorded alone (assisting in cases of memory lapses, correcting mistakes, and the always fun arguments over details of production).

This'll be the first time in a long while that I pick up a DVD on it's release day.

You should also stop by Barnes and Noble and pick up a grammar book because it's not it's release day , it is its release day.

*Makes a note to remove liner notes before selling/giving away old DVD to friends.*

will the new one have the complete 70+ minute doc. from the previous release I wonder? And what about the transfer? Same? The japanese SB looks better.

FYI: You can pre-order this from ch.com for $9.98 shipped. (Same price for the upcoming Dracula CE as well). You have to pay $10 to become a member, but you get 2 free DVDs instantly when you pay that membership fee. The free titles you can choose from is limited to about 100 titles, but I chose Bringing Up Baby 2-disc and Shawshank 2-disc, so it was worth it to me. After that, it's always free shipping and always 40-60% off MSRP for everything on the site. I think you have to buy 2 titles in 3 months and your commitment is filled for life. But this pre-order would count for one of them right away. There are good deals to be had. Monster Squad is $11.99 for instance.

Davy Mack 07-29-07 05:00 PM

Dane, I went there and saw a 49 cents per dvd with 5 more to buy offer. Is there a different one...?

thanks! d

IS Million Dollar Baby and Heat apart of the free 2 when you join?

Which dvds are there to choose from for your free 2?

Thanks.

Dane Marvin 07-29-07 05:57 PM

Make sure you're going to www.ch.com and not www.columbiahouse.com -- they have different front pages since the terms for joining each are different (despite being run by the same entity). ch.com always has free shipping on everything and there are no monthly director's selections to decline.

ThaGoddfather 07-29-07 06:03 PM

Is it worth it? The 2 dvds I must buy in 3 months, can they be under 10 bucks? I meant the 2 disc Million Dollar Baby and 2 disc Heat for the free 2.

Dane Marvin 07-29-07 06:24 PM

^ Yes, I fulfilled by purchasing Field of Dreams SE for $5.19 shipped and another title that escapes my mind for the same price. You can learn more in the Clubs forum thread about ch.com. For $20 and change, I got Field of Dreams SE, Shawshank SE, Bringing Up Baby SE and another 2-disc SE I can't think of right now. All shipped free and my commitment is now filled. There are no other catches, I swear!

As for the titles available, I can't remember what they are and some have changed by now I'm sure. There were a lot of new release types of things. You actually have to sign up before you can see the list of those DVDs available for free.

ThaGoddfather 07-29-07 08:29 PM

Thanks a lot!

DVDTalk review is up...Highly Recommended.

Dr. Forrester 07-29-07 11:58 PM

Well, I decided to take the CH plunge. They're offering great prices on at least two discs I'm going to pick up (Taxi Driver and Coppola's Dracula) and getting both the Bourne SEs for free certainly sweetened the deal.

alfonsosoriano 07-30-07 12:15 AM

Yeah, the CH thing is sounding tempting.

Apone 07-30-07 03:47 AM

I must say I am going to give this release a second thought. The new look is too 'warm' for the movie's atmosphere and undertone.

Johnny Zhivago 07-30-07 10:02 AM

Interesting comparisons in the review... I'm 100% still in but I may hold on to the previous release as well.
