The artwork positively sucks. The best I've seen is still on the Criterion LD which I'm hanging on to for many reasons, including Scorsese's commentary which is one of the best I've ever heard.
This will be my triple dip on this movie, but sucker or not, I gotta have it.
It always amazes me to see how many people say they've been holding off on the first edition in case a new one is announced. It's one of the greatest films of all time, has some decent extras, and is relatively inexpensive. What have you all been waiting for? I'm happy to upgrade, but I'm also glad I've been able to watch this a number of times in the last few years.
Freaking awesome! Can't wait to see the new transfer.
Is the "Making Taxi Driver" the same doc. as the one on the original release?
Never owned but will pick up for sure.
I like the cover art and will gladly double dip on this AFI top 100 release.

Anyway the artwork looks pretty good esp. since its a sony title & def. a pick up for me. |

I'm assuming all the extras from the previous DVD are not on this new DVD?
Sweet! I'm excited for both those commentaries. Robert Kolker is an outstanding film writer (scholarly, but still very accessible). His book A Cinema of Loneliness might be the most interesting and insightful analysis of modern movies I've ever read. Highest recommendation for anyone who doesn't own it.

It appears as if the left portion of the package is a removable transparent plastic sleeve that when removed reveals the full head shot of de niro. I hope that when you remove the plastic it is a cardboard foldout with a nice insert. I like it. My favorite movie of all time gets the deluxe treatment finally. I hope to see it a little higher on AFI's top 100 list tonight.
Doesn't give me much of a reason to upgrade sadly.
I will upgrade. It's probably one of the movies I'll always upgrade. It's kinda a shame though, I caught this on one of the HD channels and it looked amazing. I doubt even this release will look that good.

This would be a great opportunity to restore the original color of the blood (instead of that pink nonsense they were forced to change it to to achieve an R rating at the time). Of course, they won't do this. My purchase will depend on how much they actually clean the print up. Needless to say, I'm not expecting much.

Another CH special.

I think the cover art looks cool. Nevertheless Im buying this.
Love the artwork. A definite double-dip for me.
if it does include the documentary on the previous version, i'm in.
I just pre-ordered a copy of this from www.familyvideo.com for $13.74 shipped using the code "NEWPGMEM" (a "$5 off for new members" code that's good until 12/31/07). I've ordered from this website twice before (albeit, a few months ago on my old credit card and I can vouch for them and their 99c shipping is rather speedy).
I'm not sure if I should post this in the DVD Bargains forum since I used that code, so I'll just post it here... |
Yeap, I just got in on that deal at familyvideo. Good price!

Sadly, I think the uncensored version of Taxi Driver is lost forever. |
This is indeed actually a TRIPLE dip!
First release was bare bones and looked pretty bad, 2nd release was loaded and had a better transfer. (There was also a Japanese SB disc had an even BETTER transfer but no extras...) The last disc's extras reviewed... " The disc is jam packed -- and none of it is junk. It's a thrilling journey into the world that the filmmakers behind Taxi Driver lived in. There's an excellent 70 minute documentary (with interviews) done by special edition guru Laurent Bouzereau. Any questions you have will be answered here (or in the photo montage commentary, where Laurent lets loose some great nuggets that didn't make it to the documentary). There's storyboards for the slaughter sequence, a filmography, production notes, and theatrical trailers as well. That's not all -- there's also the ability to pop into the screenplay at any point in the film. The screenplay is a great read, by the way, and you can read it all the way through without watching the film. In the script, there are a few things that didn't make it to the film, and after reading it, you'll learn that much of the character dialogue seems to have been improvised by the actors to be a bit fuller. Reading the script is fun, and gives you a look at the blueprint the actors and Scorsese used. This has to be one of the most fulfilling special edition discs NOT put out by Criterion. I don't think there's a thing wrong with it..." So what more does this actually have? Just the new commentaries and some fluff featurette? Sony should have bought the rights to the original Scorcese/Schrader commentary done for the Laserdisc from Criterion! Same transfer? Superbit transfer? And where the HELL is the BD already...?!?! ok, rant over.... :) |
