Taxi Driver: Two-Disc Collector's Edition - August 14th

http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/taxi-driver.html

Per DVD Active:

"Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a collector's edition of Taxi Driver which stars Robert DeNiro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, and Harvey Keitel. This two-disc limited edition will be available to own from the 14th August, and should retail at around $24.96. The disc will include a newly remastered 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. Extras will include a video introduction by Martin Scorsese, an audio commentary by Writer Paul Schrader, a second commentary by Professor Robert Kolker, a Producing Taxi Driver featurette, a Martin Scorsese on Taxi Driver featurette, a Martin Scorsese Tribute featurette, and a Making Taxi Driver, God’s Lonely Man documentary. We've attached some early package artwork below - although it is still subject to change."

Artwork's posted there as well, and it's pretty darn nice.

Glad I held off on the original version.

A masterpiece.....and I like the artwork as well. I don't have the original release, but may have to get this version.

A must have. Although I wish Scorsese's commentary made its way onto this dvd (from the Criterion laser disc).

I was just thinking that Taxi Driver is long overdue for a new release... I'm in on this double dip.

Geofferson 06-04-07 04:46 PM

Looong overdue...glad to hear of this.

Matthew Ackerly 06-04-07 04:47 PM

Awesome... Never picked up the original release. Great coverart!

Apone 06-04-07 04:55 PM

Take that Superbit!

Zen Peckinpah 06-04-07 04:57 PM

Great artwork, not what I've come to expect from $ony. Also a great candidate for an SE, and I'm glad this is not an "Extended Unrated Digitally Remastered Superbit Final Director's Cut Edition" or the "You Talkin' to Me? Edition". Definitely buying this, but if a Blu-ray gets announced I'll wait till I upgrade to HD.

MBoyd 06-04-07 06:13 PM

I would buy a Blu Ray for this.

islandclaws 06-04-07 06:16 PM

One of my favorites. I'll happily upgrade my old version. That artwork is sa-weet!

mickey65 06-04-07 07:02 PM

No deleted scenes - no sale. I'll hold on to my original one for now...

rhcp1214 06-04-07 07:03 PM

oh my god...best news i've heard all month. AWESOME ARTWORK. Classic treatment for a classic film.

TheStoicPaisano 06-04-07 07:04 PM

This will make my birthday even better. No film does a better job with NYC at night.

MetalGator311 06-04-07 07:08 PM

You guys can thank me as I finally dipped on the Superbit a couple weeks back. Knew this would happen lol

This is getting really old not being able to secure the rights to the original Criterion commentaries.

Ringmaster 06-04-07 07:17 PM

I really hope they found the orignal negatives or used digital equipment to color correct the final shootout as the cinematopgrapher intended to do when they remastered the film the first time around. I want to see red blood not pink lemonade during the final scenes.

Yeah, but luckily there is a nice Fan Preservation DVD of it.... Who knows maybe in 20 years the HD-DVD will have the Criterion Commentary and Isolated Soundtrack.

JOE29 06-04-07 09:05 PM

I also held off on the current release, and I will pick this up on release day

darqleo 06-04-07 10:33 PM

Fantastic news, been holding out on buying the "old" one for something like this.

smashthesymbols 06-04-07 11:13 PM

Awesome. Add me to the list that's glad they never bought the first version. I kept wanting to, but kept telling myself this was such an obvious candidate for a special edition.

I agree. I mean, how much could Criterion possibly want for extras that are stuck on a format that's been dead for seven years.

RagingBull80 06-05-07 01:48 AM

Absolute no brainer for me.
My favorite film of all time, I think I'll double dip.

:)

project86 06-05-07 02:10 AM

I picked up the last release for 3.99, so i will gladly pick this one up.

Muad'Dib 06-05-07 07:10 AM

This is one movie that I don't mind double dipping on. Can't wait for this release.
