Finally finished my collection on DVD Spot. Some interesting stuff on the statistics page - who knew Ralph Dunn and Bess Flowers would be my top second and third actors? Don't like the way box sets only count as one title though, ended up having to enter each film individually.

I take it you STILL can't add titles to DVDAF...

They don't. Each film in a box set = 1 title.

50 film sets are set as 1 release / 50 titles.

You can. Go to "site map", They'll be an option for "submit new title".

Still picky as hell when it comes to approving certain titles, but what can you do besides cough up dough and become a friend of the site to get certain privileges.

Besides all that. I'm pretty happy w/DVDAf.

How do I send someone a link so they can view my DVD Spot? I just realized that the link I have in my signature sends them to a sign in page.

EDIT: Nevermind, just figured it out by clicking on NoirFan's link, so thanks NoirFan!

Question for you DVDSPOT folk:

How do I move all of the titles under ORDERED to OWNED in one move? When I select all of the titles and go to the "group actions" drop-down, there isn't a choice to do that. Don't tell me I have to click on each individual title and move them that way. Thanks to anyone who could provide some assistance regarding this matter.

Unfortunately, yes. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to add those options to the drop down menu so perhaps if you ask Croy he will implement them.

Thanks for the response. I'm surprised that feature has not been implemented as yet. You would think people would find that an annoyance, especially those who frequent DVDTALK.

Since this thread came back up I've got a question. I assume it's ok, but is it going to annoy the editors if I submit corrections to fix cover art that's correct already, just really ugly? I've come across some where the cover art is really bad and I'd like to fix them if that's acceptable to do. Also, on box sets what's considered the correct way to show the art, as a "3D" image with some white around it (link) or a flat image of just the front artwork (link)?

Hmm, just saw this thread. Glad to see I'm not alone in despising DVDAF 2.0. Usually, whenever a site I frequent changes layout, I hate it at first. I thought it was just me being me. I've been just dealing with the awful AF2.0, but with so many endorsements for DVDSpot, I think I'll check it out.

The higher the quality of the image the better so submit away. Just use your judgement when it comes to the final result as sometimes images don't end up better than the current one even though starting the process it appears like it would (often times I've even scanned a cover thinking it has to be better than the current one but after whatever compression and the small image size DVDSpot uses, it doesn't end up being any better surprisingly).

For the vast majority of cases, the direct front on cover is preferred. I'm sure there are some exceptions of certain speciality packaging and/or box sets that might not have a quality front facing cover scan available and the like but the flat front facing quality in general.

Just make sure you don't throw in too many discs in the ON ORDER folder. Otherwise you'll find it a pain to move them one by one into the OWNED folder. Since I frequently buy in bulk, the omission of the useful 'move all' option means I will be sticking with DVDAF. As far as I am concerned, even with the inferior 2.0, it's still better than DVDSPOT.

Is there a reason dvdaf has become so lazy in posting dvd covers for new release dvds over the past month?

I think most people don't even use the "ordered" tab, and most of the ones that do don't buy in bulk like some of us, and therefore aren't bothered by a few extra clicks.

Thanks. I'll have to submit updates on a few. The ones I'm bothered by are mostly ones that are cropped or scanned way too dark or something along those lines, they have issues aside from compression. There's also the one on my list where whoever scanned it didn't even bother to crop the image down enough to remove the case so you can see the sides of the keepcase still. That one is really bad, just grabbing the image off Amazon would be better.

I, for one, have never used the "ordered" tab. I simply type in the SKU# as the new DVD comes in (via me from the store or out of the box ordered). I may start using it considering the long wait times from DDD (10-15 days for me). I couldn't see missing the "group move" option though. The only time I might order more than 10 at a time is during the DDD 20% sale. Even then I couldn't see it bothering me. It would just be one more step that would allow me to gloat over my new purchase.

Oh, IMHO, DVDSpot is beter than DVDAF. YMMV

Yeah, even quickly scanning your lists there are a number that jump out that should be improved upon.

How do I custom sort my titles within a particular filter in DVDSpot? I would like to have my Masters of Cinema titles listed in order of spine #. I selected Custom Sort in the Sort By menu, but not sure what the next step would be.

In the same field where you should be able to checkmark your filters, there is also a "title" field that lists the title of your DVD.

In that, just rename your Masters of Horror to "Masters of Horror 001" and then progress in the proper order. It will sort numerically.

I prefer DVDSpot to DVDaf. First I found it to be a lot easier to use, and second I got used to the community feel of it. Third it is easier IMO to add titles to the database, and they get added by the mods much quicker than at AF. In some cases your submission is added within just a few minutes, it depends on how large the submission cue is and how much research the mod does while approving the submission. Over at AT it takes longer. I remember over at AF I once submitted a cover picture to an existing title, and it never showed up, so I resubmitted saying it had been several months with no apparent action, the pic eventually got added like 3 months after that.

A couple of things to remember is that DVDSpot until sometime in 07 was mostly run by just one person Croy who made all the main decisions (with a few moderators to approve the submissions). It was totally selfsufficient and his helpers were/are volunteers. I think DVDAF has always been the product of a big company that has very little heart and soul put into the website. I might be wrong.
