And thats exactly why it was a criterion release.

Just dont watch 2 or 3 and the above quotes ^ apply

Hey now Robocop 2 does have some finer moments to it.Robocop Vs Robocop2 battles are pretty cool, and the old man gets his lovin on in this one.

TheJoker 08-10-07 12:26 AM

Ok fine :) It does have its moments.

But three should never be seen except for when he has the jetpack on but even then...its near uwe boll bad

And the failed RoboCop 2s were pretty cool
I'd love to see an Unrated RoboCop 2 if such material exists

Are those Robocop Prime Directives Movies worth getting?

rebel-scum78 08-10-07 08:26 AM

If you can get them for a couple of bucks. The makers clearly loved the Robocop franchise, but at the same same tried to crowbar it their other loves, like John Woo and Westerns. Works now and again, although the guy playing RoboCop is clearly too small in stature. Robo looks tiny in some scenes. Soundtrack is also not the best score wise.

I actually still like 2. Of course, I was 15 when it came out and I loved the robot's minigun. Damn, that kicked all ass combined. Nowadays I see it as (watered-down, but still) Frank Miller satire--brutally macabre satire, but really nothing compared to his comics stuff like Hard Boiled. Kind of a guilty pleasure.

And yes, Robocop is a sci-fi classic; I remember fondly the days when sci-fi films still could be intelligent, satirical, and also kick-ass (see also: Terminator). Nowadays, sf is none of these things. Sad.
In any case, easily Verhoeven's best American film.

I agree. No way they will make a R-rate movie like Robocop 2 nowadays.

Recently watched Transformer (live-action one), remind me of the final showdown of Robocop vs Robocop-2.

uncle-frank 08-10-07 10:16 PM

its still as violent as it was 20 years ago, plus the added 3-4 minutes or so too the movie make it even more bloody/violent.

this one has definatley stood the test of time.

plus its in my top 10:)

uncle-frank 08-10-07 10:20 PM

^ number 2 is only good for the violence. (the begining seen was priceless) part 3 just plain sucked the only kool part i liked in it was: SPOILERS

the guy getting his legs burned by the jetpack

Josh Z 08-10-07 11:35 PM

Frank, the proper way to present spoilers is to put the text in between spoiler tags, like so:

[ spoiler ]Remove the spaces in these tags to hide the text.[ /spoiler ]

[sarcasm]Damn, he ruined Robocop 3 for me. I'll never forgive him.[/sarcasm]On the documentary from the Monster Squad, Fred Dekker states "Monster Squad destroyed my career... then I made Robocop 3" or something pretty close to that. It made me laugh. Sorry for being off topic.

UAIOE 08-11-07 03:33 AM

There is no reason to watch 3.

Ever. Not even a jetpack could save that movie from both sucking and blowing at the same time.

zepplin 08-11-07 05:08 AM

I bought the trilogy but if the pic has been remastered, I am going for this.

d2cheer 08-11-07 10:21 AM

I would like some reviews of picture quality, etc... Didn't they screw it up in previous releases?

FlickMan 08-11-07 03:51 PM

I'm only on board when a full transfer review is done

ChristianB 08-11-07 08:00 PM

Me too

gryffinmaster 08-12-07 12:49 AM

Generic positive Robocop / steelbook / dts / remaster purchase comment. :D:up:

Yavin 08-14-07 08:28 AM

I find it really odd that even though this comes out a week from today, there is still no listing for it on Best Buy (Canada) or Future Shop's website.

Dan Average 08-14-07 01:15 PM

Somebody on the Criterion forums has done a brief review. Sounds like MGM has finally done right by this film.

Good news about that transfer. If the picture does indeed lose the blue tint and retains the silver look, I'll buy it in a second.

DeanoBKN 08-14-07 02:39 PM

Looks like I am double dipping. Maybe even considering selling my Criterion DVD.

canaryfarmer 08-14-07 02:40 PM

Awesome. This release keeps sounding better and better.

Amazon.ca has the listing of the above as an import so I'm not sure if BB Canada or Future Shop will get this release.

Hopefully I'm wrong about this.

I think this is a comparison of the Lenticular Robocop, not the 20th anniversary.

I hope so too. If it is an import though, my guess is HMV in downtown Toronto will have it at least.

stingermck 08-15-07 08:53 AM

Hmmmmm cant decide. I love Robo, but have the trilogy set (even had the original snapper set also) but DTS would be nice. Hmmmmm

I doubt it will be an import. Amazon.ca has a listing (http://www.amazon.ca/Robocop-Paul-Ve...188427&sr=1-1), so I'd imagine it's just a matter of FutureShop/Best Buy not having their act together...

That's my review over at the Criterion Forum. The comparison at DVD Beaver is of the old R1, R2, R4 MGM editions and the Criterion. I refer to these images when talking about the 20th Anniversary transfer. Trust me, it looks great. Buy now! Just don't burn the fuckin' money you stupid, stupid assholes!

Gordon, thanks for the clarification. Looking forward to buying this set

gordon,
are both the theatrical and DC cuts remastered and both have DTS?

either way, mine is already enroute with "Serenity" (CE) and will be here before the weekend. can't wait!!

DarkEyes 08-15-07 06:50 PM

i cant wait to buy this dvd next week....

captainjoe 08-15-07 10:20 PM

When I get this next week I'll do a comparison between this and the Trilogy set. Nice to hear that this is finally being remastered!

C_Fletch 08-15-07 10:29 PM

Any idea with prices at the B&M's? I see the Best Buy thread does not list one.

Dr. Forrester 08-15-07 11:57 PM

Glad to see MGM finally came through with a decent release for Sgt. Murphy

Quick question - So if I sell off my Trilogy set and pick up the Steelbook + stand alone copy Robocop 2, I won't be losing anything?

Nick Martin 08-16-07 11:10 PM

I picked it up today at a Wal Mart. (Whitby, Ontario for $14.83 Canadian dollars)

A WEEK early, too. Glad to see that the Canadian bilingual garbage label is only an add-on paper label and not part of the steelbook case.

EDIT:

THEY ROYALLY SCREWED UP!

Both discs are EXACTLY THE SAME, even though they have different labels! Both are disc 1 of the set...Stupid canadian-made crap!
