Wow thats nice! I was never a Robo fan. Growing up, the movie always freaked me out and depressed the shit out of me. But I found the Criterion a few years back for $10 and began to really like the flick. I'll get this as soon as I see some reviews to see if its the unrated cut, the sound, transfer, etc.
I love the cover and the fact you dont see his face. Its a great pose. |
I only have the bare bones, R rated MGM version, so I'll probably double-dip on this.
|
I almost bought the trilogy just to get a decent copy of 'Robocop.' With this addition, I'll wait. Amazing cover, extras, and hopefully good transfer.
|
They shouldn't have wasted disc space with the rated version and put more extras instead. I'll stick with the Criterion.

I've heard 3 is horrible, how is 2, is it worth keeping the trilogy? Not at all, at least to me. Terrible movie compared to the original. |

I've heard 3 is horrible, how is 2, is it worth keeping the trilogy? And UNLESS you are curious to expose yourself to the "hype" and complete the RoboCop saga, RoboCop 3 is a disaster of epic proportions. Yeah, it was good when I was 6 or 7, but factor in the fact that Fred Dekker, director of Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad (both classics) was the co-writer and director and you won't believe how bad it is. OCP is going bankrupt without any evil corporate bigwig, RoboCop ain't Peter Weller, a techie kid who can deactivate an ED-209 even though her family is in poverty, robot ninjas being manufactured by OCP, flying RoboCop...it takes what was once a satirical bloodbath intended for adults and boils it down to the consistency of a bad Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles episode. One of the worst movies EVER IMO. |
I never double dip. but this is certainly making me consider it. I'd probably keep my Criterion version for its director approved aspect ratio. I'm sure this version won't retain it.
|
What is the extended cut?
I mean, is it going to be the same as the Criterion cut or a new version all together? |
I'm sure it's the same cut from the MGM discs. I can't imagine Fox would go to the trouble to create a new version.

I hate "Robocop 3" more than "Alien 3", "Alien Resurrection" and "Godzilla (1998)" combined. |
OT, but...awesome.

That was cheese

Don't think I'll be picking this one up, I also own both the criterion and trilogy

same here, I don't see a reason to triple dip on this... there doesn't seem to be anything exclusive to this version (right?) |
I don't own any of the previous versions so I'll be picking this up.

Makes me wish I was a bigger fan of the franchise. Dig the first and second films, but not in any big way. Haven't seen the third. Funny feeling to be excited about something you're not really excited about. But, of course, the steelbook plays a large role in that.
Main question I have, though: Is Paul Verhoeven's preferred aspect ratio of 1.66:1 going to be used, or will it be the same 1.85:1 transfer from the 3-disc RoboCop Trilogy set? Probably the latter, but I always wonder if a director's preferences are honored in cases like this. --THX |
There haven't been any reports about the ratio yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's exactly the same transfer (with the same 1.85:1 ratio) as the MGM Trilogy version for the unrated cut, and the barebones MGM version for the R rated cut.

the third movie is where Robocop flies - right?

It was a miniseries called "RoboCop: Prime Directives", and it was the BIGGEST PILE of dogshit to ever be associated with RoboCop. Just the worst...They weren't B-movies, they were worse than Z-movies. Just thinking of them brings back some very bad memories. |

The only good thing about RoboCop 3 was the "I'll buy that for a dollar" guy still being included.

;) I have never seen 3 and now I have absolutely no interest. I held off on getting the boxset because of the AR issue and because I didn't want either 2 or 3. I also think this will be the same 1.85:1 transfer that is in the current boxset. Not sure if I will get this yet, but it's good to know. Thanks for posting OP. |
Robocop 3 had a fantastic story, with a ton of potential for the script. The execution was all wrong.
Amazon.com has a listing for the Blu-Ray, I wonder when that'll come out? |
What they should do is completely remaster both cuts from the ground up with new color corrections and dirt removal. At least present the "Director's Cut" in 1.66:1. And for Christ's sake please do not pump up the contrast. I just rewatched it yesterday and the skies are completely whited-out in the finale and there are so many details lost.
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare3/robocop.htm Capture 3 really shows how bad it is, many of the wires and poles are completely clipped out. |

I just realized the guy in the first Robocop that gets the toxic waste all over him is Graem from 24
|
Close.
Emil is the guy that played Graem in 24. :p |

Bump. This is up for pre-order on Amazon.com, I'm sure other sites as well:
Robocop 20th Anniv. Edition 16 bucks. |
How does Robocop stand up over all these years? Hell I was 11 or so when I seen it for the first time. I know I've never seen the extended cut. So, fuck it I might just buy this. If its not too chezzy that is.
|
^Stand-up? How about it's (argueably) the greatest sci-fi/action film of all time? I know there are many others that could top that list, but Robocop stands the test of time as one of the best ever made. Every social issue it deals with is still relevant today, perhaps even moreso. It's never cheesy and the violence is still as impactful as it ever was. It's one of my favorite films of all time.
