The first dvd I ever bought was LOTR:fellowship of the ring, a few weeks before getting my dvd player and I still have it now!

Scott27 03-21-07 10:46 AM

Jan. '99, a couple weeks before I got my first player - "Weird Al Yankovic: The Videos". I have since upgraded to the "Ultimate Video Collection," but I still have the first one. I got it at FYE (back when it was still Saturday Matinee), and it remains the only disc that I ever paid full MSRP for.

shtfilter 03-21-07 10:57 AM

Christmas 1998
(1st DVD Player) Panasonic A105. Paid WAY too much money for it. Still works.
(1st DVD) Sliding Doors. Got along with the above mentioned DVD player. Still have it.

I think Goldeneye was my first dvd in Dec 1997. I sold that dvd. I have bought the Special Edition and Ultimate Edition in Volume 3 since then.

Josh H 03-21-07 01:00 PM

Se7en. Got rid of it when the SE came out since it was a flipper.

james2025a 03-21-07 03:15 PM

I haggled with the guy in the store where i was buying my multi region player and i managed to snag copies of Payback and Blade in for free. I still have both. That was going back some time now, back in 1999.

jjcool 03-21-07 03:37 PM

First dvd's were Matrix, the original flipper Seven and The Fugitive. Think this was fall of 98. I could be mistaken. These were followed by 5 free movies i got for buying my Toshiba online. They were Six Days seven nights, Lethal Weapon 4, Stargate, Stepmom and one other I cant remember. Still Have all of them, but Seven and The Fugitive are in the stack to give away as they have been upgraded.

bunkaroo 03-21-07 04:18 PM

I bought 9 DVD's with my first player the week of Thanksgiving in 2000.

They were:

Shawshank Redemption
Gladiator
Goodfellas
X-Men
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: First Contact
Star Trek: Insurrection
Braveheart
The Matrix

The only ones I still have are Gladiator and Braveheart. All the others have been replaced with newer editions. I have the Extended Edition of Gladiator but decided to keep the original 2 DVD set for the DTS.

candyrocket786 03-21-07 04:36 PM

X-men (original release/still own it/never upgraded)

I then bought my first DVD player a few days later (PS2).

ResIpsa 03-21-07 05:10 PM

The original non-DTS "Last of the Mohicans" (Michael Mann) for $35, later eBayed for $10 to get the DTS version. It was mostly a ploy to get the wife on board with all the fancy HT gear I planned to purchase. It worked, but now my wife insists on laughing at me everytime she sees the DVD on sale for $5. :grunt:

Absolutely Fabulous Complete Series 4 in January 2002. Yes I still have it and would never part with it.

ScottsdaleSaint 03-21-07 11:43 PM

My first DVD was "Bring It On".
At the time I didn't have a DVD player but I quickly got an AudioVox Portable Player.
Still have the DVD. Kirsten and Eliza :hump:

The absolutely atrocious and cheap Madacy release of Metropolis. I replaced it with the Kino (which was my 500th disc) and then replaced that with the Eureka! MoC version (1000th disc)

DVDMagic 03-22-07 07:03 AM

My first player was a Sony, but can't remember the model and it's long gone now. To accompany that I purchased 'Scream' and 'Three Kings', and I still have both of those too, but havne't watched them in a while

fliggil 03-22-07 07:16 AM

I had a DVD player for about a year (I won it in a raffle) before I ever bought any movies, but my first purchase was Boiler Room and Meet the Parents in early 2001. Still have them. Haven't watched the DVDs in a while, but they seem to be on TV every so often and I still enjoy them.

That's pretty cool if you're not estimating and you really are "celebrating anniversaries" with your favorite? film. Or even if you are actually.

PixyJunket 03-22-07 08:18 AM

Mine was either Blade or Revolutionary Girl Utena vol. 1. I still have both.

madcougar 03-22-07 08:30 AM

The Matrix purchased in the fall of 1999 about three months before I bought a DVD player. And yes I still have that DVD.

daniel18 03-22-07 09:25 AM

The one that started it all for me was The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition in 2002, to try out with my new X-Box that I had bought after it's first price drop (my first DVD player). LOTR was also my first double dip when the box set of the Theatrical Editions came out 2004.

Wow...thinking about this brings back some memories. My first DVDs were purchased the day I bought my first HT system with the exception of the front speakers (had a pair of 15" KLHs from my college days. Ha! :) ) All one shot at the local Best Buy. Didn't know any better than to go to Best Buy for audio equipment back then...still thought they had the best stuff. Must have been the summer of 2000? Here was the shopping list that day:

27" Sony Trinitron TV - was the biggest TV I could fit in my Jeep. Upgraded twice, first to 40" Toshiba HDTD, then my Hitachi 65", parents still have the Sony...great SD TV, a buddy of mine has the Toshiba.

Sony 5.1 Receiver - One of the first with DTS if I remember. Thought it was awesome at the time...looking back now that's pretty funny. Loved the glowing blue light when it was decoding DD/DTS though. Upgraded twice, first to a Denon 2802, then to Emotiva seperates. I'm pretty sure an old co-worker is still using the Sony.

Sony DVD Player - no progressive scan in those days. Upgraded twice, first to a Sony progressive scan, then to a Denon 2200. Still can't believe I bought into the Sony hype so much back then. Both Sony players are with friends of mine. :)

Sony VCR - needed a stereo VCR to replace the old mono one. Afterall, Star Wars was still only on VHS back then! :) Still have it, although it isn't used much anymore.

Cerwin Vega center speaker - already had KLH fronts, didn't have a clue about timbre matching, and thought CV was the best speaker around! :) Upgraded twice, first to a Paradigm CC-170, then to my Onix Rocket RSC200. Parents are still using the CV, best friend using the Paradigm.

Some ultra cheap tiny KLH indoor outdoor surrounds - they were only $20 and worked at the time. Upgraded twice, first to Paradigm Atoms, then to Onix RSS300s.

Also eventually upgraded those KLH fronts three times, first to Paradigm Titans, then to Paradigm Monitor 3s (moved the Titans back for 7.1), then to Onix Rockets RS1ks. The Atoms got moved to the rear for 7.1, and they were replaced by Onix Rockets RS760s. My best friend has all the Paradigms now and loves them. Went without a sub for quite a while until I moved into a house and added a Paradigm PW2200. Added a Onix UFW12 with the rest of the Rockets. Soon they will both be replaced by a Onix BMF, which should "complete" the theater for a while.

Crazy looking back on how my little theater evolved over the years, and how my upgrades led to a nice little system for both my parents and my best friend. Good stuff.

Sorry to get so off topic...just thinking about it brought back a lot of memories! :)

To get back to the topic, that fateful day at Best Buy also resulted in the first of 500-some DVDs in my collection, The Star Trek:TNG movie collection (at the time just Generations, First Contact, and Insurrection), and the Nightmare on Elm Street Collection. The Trek collection is gone, replaced by the nice 2 disk editions. The NoES set isn't going anywhere, although I have picked up the new DVD of the first movie, which is awesome. Keeping the old one to keep the collection together though.

Sorry for writing a book here. Fun thread though! :)

Jediturtle 03-22-07 10:40 AM

Almost forgot, I also got in on the 5 free DVDs from way back when. Stepmom (long gone), Six Days Seven Nights (gone), Lethal Weapon 4 (still have it along with the trilogy box), Lost in Space (still have, but haven't watched in years and years), Stargate (the old flipper gone - upgraded to the UE).
