December 1997 - Re-Animator (Original Elite DVD Release), still have it.
|
When I bought my DVD player - in 2003, I believe - my first movie was The Matrix, which I bought at the same time. Still have it.
|
Lethal Weapon
|
When I first bought my Philips DVD Player (around 1998/99) for $250 it came with 5 free DVD movies, the only ones I can remember are Stargate, Lost in Space and Enemy of the State. I then bought Matrix.
|
I was not a movie buff at all back in late 1998. But then I started reading about these new fangled "DVDs", and was attracted to their permanency. I rarely bought VHS due to their fragility.
I actually bought 10 or so DVDs before I bought my first player. I think a Bigstar deal was my first purchase. All I remember is it being two movies on sale for 9.99 each, possibly a Star Trek movie and maybe Lifeforce? I still have the receipt somewhere.... |
Tommy Boy
Yes, I still have it. It's one of my favorite movies |

Robocop- Criterion Collection - 1998
Yup, I still have it. Even though the newer DVD releases (which I own) look and sound better, I'm never gonna let go of this copy :) |
the first one i bought was the "Die Hard" 5-Star. it is my favorite movie of all time and i wanted to start off right. it was also the first one i ever played on my current home theater system.

First DVD? It's tough to remember, but I believe it was the Alien Quadrilogy back in (I think) 2003. Got it at an HMV for full price, and it still hasn't let me down yet.
|
Very first DVD I bought was "Luminous Visions", a computer-animated thing with music by Tangerine Dream. I didn't have a DVD player yet but it also came with a music CD so I could listen to that right away and had my first DVD in my hands. Tried playing it in my laserdisc and CD players just to see what it would do; same as putting a CD in wrong side up. Got a player a couple weeks later and bought "Daylight" from the same store since they had just a few discs there, then got "Boogie Nights" the day after that. "The Wedding Singer" came out shortly after that and I bought it just because I was amazed at being able to get a new release for under $20!
And yes, I still have all of them- I will NEVER get rid of anything!!! |
Found my old receipt. It was December of 1998.
Star Trek First Contact Good Will Hunting Still own both, although at least the first is in the ebay pile (now own upgraded 2 discer). |
XFiles Season 1 - Yes still have.
I got it when it first hit shelves...before I even had a dvd player. And it was a blind buy too. I had seen some random episodes (conspiracy eps) that didn't really make sense, but I figured if I started from season 1 I'd like the show and understand it. Well, I love show, but I can't say I totally understand the conspiracy. |
Lethal weapon 4 and LA confidental- yes I still have them both. Even when the 2-disc version comes out this year I will still hold on to the original dvd.

11/25/1998
Twas the night before Thanksgiving and I purchased Twister and Star Trek: First Contact as I purchased my first DVD player. I still have both, despite the fact that I have double-dipped on each for the special editions. I refuse to part with my first babies. |
'End of Days' and 'The World is not Enough' and yet I still have both of them, proudly displayed in my collection. I bought them both in June of 2000.
|
Ah, you never forget your first...mine was Lifeforce (mmm...anamorphic naked Mathilda May!). Still have it, and the image is virtually identical to my laserdisc copy.
|
Even though I've answered this very question roughly Se7en times in this forum over the past few years I guess I'll do so again. The first DVD I ever bought was the sleek, bold, and beautiful Silver SE of "Tomorrow Never Dies" back in December of '98...the same day I purchased my first player.
And yes, I still have it despite having the Bond SE collections that includes the colorized cover version. In fact, I'll continue to hold on to it once I finally get around to getting the Ultimate Bond sets for sentimental reasons...and because it's damn pretty. |
The original release of The Sixth Sense. May 14, 2000. Same day I joined the forum.
|
US Marshalls and I still have it, but don't watch it. Got it at CompUSA for $4 back in the day.
|
either evil dead or army of darkness bootleg, i think it was the original anchor bay ED though.
|
20th December 2000. I purchased Mackenna's Gold (Hey, I didn't sold or discard my DVDs not even a single DVD yet)
|
I bought my DVD player at Best Buy in 1998, same day I bought Dark City and Scream.
I still have both discs |
