It's just a preference. Some people like their cars to be blue. Some people prefer wheat bread to white.
A good number of people on here are collectors. Packaging is part of the collectability factor for some. Tins are different and unique. They tend to be greeted with "Oh, that's cool...where did you get that?" when shown to others. Plus they protect the contents like nothing else.
For the Superman set.... he's the "man of steel" so what better way to house the DVDs? Just makes perfect sense to me

To put this rumor to rest...here's some info from The Digital Bits (posted 2:15 PST on Thursday):
Warner Home Video has informed us that the fixed discs for the Superman: The Movie 4-disc set and the 14-disc Superman Ultimate box set are about to arrive from the replicator, which means they should START shipping out to those of you who called their 800 number (800-553-6937) over the next few days. Obviously, you'll need to be patient what with the Christmas mail slow down and the fact that TONS of people have been (and will be) calling the 800 number... but it looks like the discs are at least finally ready to ship. That also means that you should start seeing the fixed Superman 4-disc set and 14-disc Ultimate box in stores by mid-January. They'll have new SKU numbers to identify them, and we'll let you know what they are as soon as Warner informs us.

Just a guess but I would bet the next release will be the inner box only without the tin. It looks a lot like something they designed so they could do just that.

If you'd have been paying attention, it's been made clear that the problem had only just been discovered, so replacement discs hadn't been replicated yet. Just because you assumed an 800 number meant they had replacement discs ready and waiting, it doesn't mean tdb.com is foolish for reporting to those of us who actually read news posts instead of assuming we know everything that the disc are now really being replicated and should be shipping soon.
Thanks to thedigitalbits.com, and no thanks to people who just like to threadcrap.

Now, I'll agree that if it is something people need to live (like water/food in a disaster area) trying to make a huge profit is a bad thing, but DVDs? Give me a break.

Anyone who overpays for this deserves to be ripped off.
Out of curiosity, what amount do you deem "overpaying" in this case?

Even single-disc releases can start at around $100 just because sellers know some people will pay that much. I'm not saying that rare DVDs shouldn't command a premium, but many sellers take it way too far, or rely on desperate collectors to do it for them.
The worst are those who are now snapping up multiple copies of this thing, because not only are they making it more difficult for other collectors in their area to find one, but they will later take advantage of many of those same collectors when they auction it off to the highest bidder and reap untold profits from an unfortunate lack of supply due to a simple manufacturing problem.
Greed just bothers the shit out of me, and saying that people don't have to pay the high prices if they don't want to doesn't let opportunistic hoarders off the hook.

It's still the buyer that determines the general price value. Just like any other commodity. If the buyer wasn't willing to pay the high price then the seller would lower the price. You said it yourself, people are willing to pay the price. Economics 101 (or even the high school version).

I should have made that clearer the first time. Anyone who overpays (lets say 2 to 3 times MSRP) because they believe a dvd is no longer in print without taking the time to verify that it's being re-released deserves to be ripped off.
For example, two weeks ago people were paying $70 for Gandhi. Who would do such a thing when it is so easy to verify that, yes, a new edition is coming soon? Those people.
I collect rare dvds. I've bought and sold single discs for over $100 before. I just don't buy tins or other 'limited' editions.
