Black Christmas (1974) - New DVD Likely This December
It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas. A Black Christmas, that is.
A couple of days ago I emailed Dan Duffin, webmaster of the awesome Black Christmas website itsmebilly.com. I asked him if Critical Mass has any plans of rereleasing the 1974 original Black Christmas on DVD sometime around December to coincide with the release of the remake in theaters. I also asked him about Lacey Chabert's role in the remake. Here is his reply.
So it seems 1974's Black Christmas will finally be getting that 16x9 enhanced transfer so many of us have been waiting for. December seems like such a long way off. It's cool that they're also going to be releasing it on HD DVD or Blu Ray in addition to SD DVD. I wonder if all of the extras from the 2002 Collector's Edition DVD will be carried over or if there will be any new extras? Hopefully they'll include the original 1974 cover art again. I also can't wait to see the remake in theaters (although I know it won't be as good as the excellent original) and will certainly be buying it on DVD too, probably in late Spring/Early Summer 2007.

Its highly likely that Black CHristmas will get a simulataneous true
16x9 new DVD in the follwing formats.
Blu Ray - or - HD DVD (my preference is Blu Ray)
and also a new single disc normal res DVD.
Yest to be confirmed in anyway - but I did some work for the next
release sometime ago.....
No Lacey is not playing the Jess role.... and the characters are brand
new, - hope that helps
regards
Dan

Good for you! How about an even exchange...my unique box set for your ordinary box set? LOL.
Is there anyone who bought this box set from DVD Planet/Digital Eyes or Deep Discount DVD experiencing the same issue?

The original Black Christmas is my favourite horror movie, so it pains me that they felt the need to remake it (especially since they plan to add a backstory in, for one of the major characters.) I just recently bought it on DVD, but I'd buy it again. Thanks for the news.

It's bad enough they're remaking what is IMO a classic, but
Apparently the Studios feel that everyone that goes to the movies needs everything spelled out for them.

But I'm glad that the disc release of the original will finally be widely available soon.

9 times out of 10 it's scarier when the killer is just a big mystery. You start backstorying the killer and you end up demystifying him. What's scarier: "There's a strange maniac with an axe trying to break down my door"...or "John Smith the tragic loser who loves cats is trying to kill me"?

But since there was no clear motive given in the original film (Which resulted in the creepiness that many us experienced) the remake will have to spell out things (For those who need an explanantion)

I will definitely double-dip on this film, if it's re-released on DVD this winter. It's my favourite horror movie. It was also filmed about an hour from my house, which I find really cool.
The remake pisses me off to no end.

I saw this movie for the FIRST time last night, I had heard it was a cool movie so I put it in my queue, and about 8:30 last night I decided to pop it in and take a looksey. It was quite scary.
Funny thing, I find out today, there is a remake on the way, starring Michelle Trachtenberg. If I see that movie, I am probably going to wonder when is Buffy going to come save her ass.

Dan Duffin, webmaster of itsmebilly.com, has broken the news:
It doesn't look like any of the extras (or the reversible cover featuring the original 1974 art) from the 2002 Collector's Edition are being carried over, so I wouldn't sell that disc.

heres the news.
Here is the USA cover for the upcoming Special Editon available in stores on December 5th. The Canadian cover will be different, but the content will be the same.
The disc has a new 25 min Documentary.
Olvia Hussey Interview
Art Hindle Interview
Margot Kidder Interview
2 Brand New Audio scenes
New HD transfer, very clean image. and 5.1 Digital Audio.
The DVD cover was designed to a brief from Critical Mass and Itsmebilly.com and we are Over the moon with it. Personally I think its the best cover yet. Modern yet classy..... You may have your own opinions....but I hope you all find it agreeable.
