I like how you can get the new Star Wars discs with the real versions in 4x3 letterbox and the bastardized versions in pan & scan. I should have bought those versions, since if you're gonna bastardize the movie you might as well go all out. (And I don't care if Lucas prefers the new versions, he's simply nuts!)

Me neither. I'd just wait til I had more money to get the WS.
Although, I can probably let it slide if someone buys FS cheap to preview a movie and intend to buy WS later if they like it.

I've bought a lot of FS's of some classic movies. The Universal Monster Legacy sets and other classics, because that is all that is available for them.
Are the majority of the classics only available in FS and not in WS. Is there a reason for this? Were most older movies only shot in FS?

(fullscreen/widescreen are horrible terms these days, we need to get people talking in OAR terms!!)

I'm thoroughly ashamed to admit I own a FS copy of the worst possible title one could own in FS - House of Flying Daggers. It was cheap... but that's no excuse, I know. And apart from being FS, it only has the dubbed English soundtrack.

That becomes more difficult when you consider that some DVD movies are in multiple modes. They may show opening credits in widescreen and then jump to fullscreen for the body of the movie.
I once watched Ben Hur on Cinemax in fullscreen. As the chariot race scene came up, the picture gradually "shrank" until it was the correct aspect ratio, then went back to fullscreen afterwards in the same manner. I later read that Cinemax had more complaints about that than about anything else they had done in their history. I don't think I've seen that done anywhere since.

Someone mentioned watching movies on TV in fullscreen... I hate doing that, too. Hardly ever watch TV anyway, but I never watch movies on TV, even if there are no commercials. Fullscreen is just too much to bear.

There are a lot of movies I love that were only released in FS, and I doubt they will ever be seen in WS.
Sure we want WS for everything, but if I can't get it I'll take FS. I can still enjoy the film.

Have to comment again. I've enjoyed the humor in this thread & read some of the best ones aloud to my wife, but I hope most of them are tongue-in-cheek responses. We prefer widescreen, too, but will watch fullscreen if that's what's available (we just finished watching the 'widescreen' Racing Stripes DVD...the "letterboxing" amounted to about half a centimeter at top & bottom of screen...it was so little difference that at first we thought we were watching a fullscreen copy!). I still think that at least half of contemporary movies are filmed so that FS doesn't drastically alter the content. And one additional observation...after growing up seeing Ben Hur both in theaters & on television, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed the first time I saw the chariot race in WS (on videotape). I was so used to the dramatic closeups...but when the chariots enter the arena, the image shrank so severely that the image was reduced to approximately 1/2 of the screen size. Even on a 32-inch television, tiny size was distracting...kind of like watching Ben Hur played by miniature toy soldiers. Hopefully, a widescreen televison will rectify this when we finally purchase one).
Anyway, I'm wondering if this is a generational thing (for those who are truly serious about never watching FS, even on TV). For over-50 folks such as us, we can still remember when color tv was a rarity & the idea of owning movies at home was only a dream. Maybe that is why we can "stand" to watch FS versions...we grew up when the only choice to even VIEW movies was at the theater (and so many good movies never came to town) or on television in severely edited form w/ commercial interruptions on 13-inch tv sets using rabbit ears.
We ALWAYS buy, rent, or watch WS when we have a choice. However, we would hate to pass up a classic movie/performance simply because it's not in the version we prefer. Of course, these days it's usually possible to get the preferred version if one has enough patience or money.
P.S. You know you're getting old when you start sounding like your grandparents...talking about the "spoiled" younger generation who doesn't appreciate how primitive things used to be! LOL

i wouldn't buy full screen because of the price. i can see how people would though. that's just their choice.
and the only full screen titles i have are for dvds that only were available in fs. like batman and batman returns. also tv sets and "along came polly," which was a gift. i didn't realize it was fs until i opened it. but i wasn't going to throw it away. it was a gift and figured it's just one of those movies i'd just watch to get a laugh or two.
