This isn't particularly related to the exclusives, but since I wasn't able to get this in at the time, I picked up ESB at WAL-MART Monday night (9/11) and was very impressed with the graphic novel. I was thinking that it was gonna be this tiny stapled comic the size of a DVD, but to get a full-sized graphic novel with a glue binding was a really nice surprise. Unfortunately the other surprise wasn't as nice -- the cover had crept up and wedged itself under the security sticker, something that to me is like something getting wedged under my fingernail. You just know the damn sticker is gonna rip the artwork, and unbeknownst to me at the time, these covers are reeeaally thin. Luckily, the DVD case inside is also shrinkwrapped so I could take it back and get the "naked" version, but I had hoped to remind folks that when you buy a DVD that's inside another box (BEST BUY's tin, for example), you don't really know what kind of shape the DVDs inside are in.

Speaking of the covers, which was the original point of my post, I'm surprised nobody's posted about how incredibly thin these suckers really are! I kept the case for ESB from the 2004 set, so I just transferred the "bonus disc" into a single-disc case, and WOW, those are the thinnest covers I've ever seen! I don't really mind, except that most of the places I went (Circuit City for the beautiful SW lithograph and TARGET for the so-so concept art postcard) had such bad cover creep on their DVDs it was ridiculous. I can usually be nonchalant enough about checking the covers so as not to look like a raving DVD geek, but these were so messed up that I had to go through just about every single copy on the shelves to find a good one (or perhaps I should say, one that met my exacting specifications).

Too little too late probably, but hopefully someone enjoyed that story. I'm also surprised nobody (to my knowledge) mentioned the exclusive figure collections at WAL-MART. The quality of the graphic novel notwithstanding, those figures looked pretty damn sad. Still, the more cool exclusives the better!

Lastly, I seem to recall that spine crap (see the thread so titled) was more of a problem on the Circuit City and TARGET ones than at WAL-MART, at least I think that's how it went. Cover creep wasn't so much of an issue though, because I'm pretty sure at least the CC ones didn't have a security sticker on the bottom. That way covers pushed to the bottom were okay, but at WAL-MART it really had to be pretty well centered or you ran the risk of ripping the insert with one of the security stickers.

Okay, I feel better now. No fun being a geek if you can't geek out about stuff with fellow geeks.

Well, they have sprung up all over the place here in Miami. I saw a whole bunch of tins in three Best Buy stores I visited yesterday.

I realize this thread is pretty much dead because most of the exclusives are probably gone by now, but I wanted to point something out for the benefit of those who haven't bought these yet, and I dare not go into the general threads on these releases because all the whining would be REALLY bad for my blood pressure.

If anyone still has the 2004 or 2005 boxed set and is thinking about buying the new 2-disc sets, you may not want to sell or trade off your current DVDs just yet. It seems the contents of Disc One of the new sets are identical to the 2004 set, but it's worth mentioning that they not only say "Disc One" on them, but they also have a big ugly FBI anti-piracy logo on them. Nothing major, but I much prefer the original 2004 discs that have nothing blocking the great artwork. Can't say for sure whether the 2005 set is the same way, but since the "Disc One" had to have been added for this new release, I'd imagine the anti-piracy logo wasn't added until now either. I'm all for fighting piracy, but I don't like having that big logo on the disc, and thought I'd warn my fellow OCD fanboys about the subtle difference before they sold off their original sets.

I was just in our local Best Buy over the weekend and they had an absolute TON of the Star Wars Trilogy tins. I stopped counting at 35 and that was just on the dislay at the front of the store. Of course, the price is now $69.99, but if you want one, they are still out there...

Not in Hollywood. Three days ago, they had big stacks of lithographs for all three movies.

2 weeks ago i went to walmart & grabbed the star wars exclusives,
while there i also grabbed some $5 dvds, & desperate housewives s2..
(luckily they still had a few with the exclusive promo dvd)

most of the star wars sets were a bit dented,
since the boxes are made of paper..
but i managed to find some in decent condition

there was also a black sticker on the plastic wrap of each,
covering part of the front image, where the comic upc is displayed..

i doubt vintage comics are in walmarts computers,
but maybe they just didnt want to risk the chance
that you might walk away with a new dvd set for 30¢..

on the way out, i spotted family guy - freakin sweet collection for $15,
(to my knowledge its out of print, & ive been meaning to find a copy)
but i already left the register, & im trying to stick to a limited budget,
so i figured id just come back later after i found an extra $15..

but then last week, circuit city had the same family guy dvd for $7.50,
& they were giving away xmen promo dvds too (includes $3 coupon for xmen 3)..

while there, i took a chance & asked if they had any
star wars lithographs left, & they did.. so they let me take some! ^-^
(my local circuit city is kinda small,
but they seem to get the same amount of promos as larger stores,
as a result theres sometimes leftovers the next week)
if you couldnt find all 3 lithos, ask around, you might get lucky..

so thats an oop dvd, a promo dvd, & all 3 lithos.. not bad for $8

now, as for the tpbs..
the actuall covers differ slightly from the images used on the box..
personally, i prefer the vintage marvel banner,
but these are owned by dark horse now, so of course they had to change that..

info from the inside covers..

TPB#1 "Originally published as Star Wars #1-6 by Marvel Comics
and then as Classic Star Wars : A New Hope #1 & #2 by Dark Horse Comics
"

TPB#2 "Originally published as Star Wars #39-44 by Marvel Comics
and then as Classic Star Wars : The Empire Strikes Back #1 & #2 by Dark Horse Comics
"

TPB#3 "Originally published as Star Wars : Return of the Jedi #1-4 by Marvel Comics
and then as Classic Star Wars : Return of the Jedi #1 & #2 by Dark Horse Comics
"

im a little confused about that though, if you look at the ep6 case,
the corner of the original comic cover says its #27..?
but that would still be after #44 right..?
well, im sure theres an easy explanation,
if i bothered to research the comics history.. eh..

at the back of TPB#2 is a list of other star wars tpbs from dark horse..
aparently theres a whole history from 25,000 years before ep4, to 25+ years after..
(if only theyd put them all out on roms like marvel has been doing with xmen)

at the back of TPB#3 is a gallery of production sketches from all 3 films..
simply due to the size of the paper, this is already a much higher resolution
than any 'dvd gallery'.. part of me is even thinking of buying another
so that i can tear apart the binding & make some quality scans..

& now for my pics..
i know, i need a better camera, but this was the best i could do..
i had to fix the brightness & color just to get the pics to look this good..
but, at least my $14 scanner did a better job..

ep4
....

ep5
.....

ep6
....
....

all 3 have the same image on back..
(see if you can quess which one i scanned!)

...

i didnt bother with pics of the lithos, since someone else
already posted pics much nicer than i can possibly take now..
but heres my scans of the ads..

.

& all(?) the other images in this thread are here..

is that all of them?
somehow, i actually missed any past post 197, till just now..
(how the hell did that happen? they were posted on the 12th..)
but ive already uploaded my pics & typed all this out,
so i might as well post it anyway..

any pics of the pins & poster?

btw.. i know the whole letterbox issue,
but whats the story with the 4:3 version?
is the 'original' disc still letterboxed there, or is it 4:3 too?
cause a 4:3 picture would actually have more detail
than the cheapo letterboxing..
(at least where the picture still existed anyway)

Rabbit,

The #27 is from the Marvel Magazine that reprinted the comic story.

The "#27" is actually the number of "Marvel Super Special."

MSS was a magazine that Marvel Comics put out in the 1970s that contained special stories. (It's possible they did this instead of releasing one-shots because, at the time, they sold all of their comics through magazine distributors.)

Other notable Marvel Super Specials were:

#1 KISS (printed with real KISS blood!)
#3 Close Encounters of the Third Kind
#5 KISS
#6 Jaws 2
#8 Battlestar Galactica
#15 Star Trek The Motion Picture
#16 The Empire Strikes Back
#17 Xanadu (!?!?)
#18 Raiders of the Lost Ark
#19 For Your Eyes Only
#20 Dragonslayer
#21 Conan the Barbarian (movie adaption)
#22 Blade Runner
#23 Annie
#24 The Dark Crystal
#26 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
#27 Return of the Jedi
#29 Tarzan the Ape Man
#31 The Last Starfighter
#32 The Muppets Take Manhattan
#33 Buckaroo Banzai
#34 Sheena
#36 Dune (Adapts the Lynch film)
#37 2010
#41 Howard the Duck (film adaption; seems to have killed the series once and for all)

Marvel also had an ongoing Star Wars series that began with the adaption of the first movie (#1-6) and then did monthly original stories (often with a big green gunslinging bunny rabbit, I shit you not) until #39-44, which adapted ESB, and then continued monthly with original stories until the series as cancelled with #107 in 1986. Dark Horse recently reprinted all or most of these in large volumes. I've been tempted to get them just for the nostalgia factor.

Yep, the boxes at WAL-MART show the original comics, but the artwork on the graphic novels has been modified slightly. Still, it's nice to at least have the original background art. Thanks for pointing out the "reprint" information -- maybe now I can get rid of my "Classic STAR WARS - The Empire Strikes Back #1" graphic novel. I'll probably keep my original MARVEL Super Special, though.

I just started buying all of them. I got 4 of them from Buy.com using that $10 coupon.

Good luck trying to find the first one. I had to pay full-price from a rare book dealer because it's already OOP. Now I just have to get the other 2 and sell off all the original comics

question, I have bunch of Star Wars promotional buttons and posters left from work and I was think of selling them on Ebay. Do you think they would have any resale value?
