This is a tuffy, without being off more than likely, but I am gonna say "Se7en", the old flipper (FS, WS) snap case version. That was the first dvd I owned, however I sold it and upgraded to the book version of the film eventually. Now I wish I had held onto it, because of it's historical value for me, lol!

Easy one. I carried an Onkyo 6 disc changer home from Circuit City (it was in a giant box) on the subway. It was a spur of the moment purchase (read: not discussed with the wife), and it was $449. To ease the level of my wife's anger, I purchased her favorite movie: The Shawshank Redemption (also purchased Three Kings--a blind buy) and we watched it that night. It helped a little, but she became annoyed when all through the movie I kept asking her, "you see how much better it looks, right?" (We viewed it on a then top-of-the line Hitachi 50" SD projection TV that was among the first to have component inputs).

The Matrix for me. Watched it at a friends house which persuaded me into buying a DVD player. And the rest is history.
I'm pretty sure it was Braveheart.
It was Cutthroat Island for me......owned the laserdisc back then and when the dvd came I bought it together with a player.
It was either the Matrix or Silence of the Lambs criterion collection back in 1999
I had ordered a few different titles from different places, but Blade came in the same day I got my player. Watched Blade the first day and The Matrix the next day.
Austin Powers 2
Either the first DVD I ever bought (<b>The Right Stuff</b>), or the first I ever rented (<b>The Ninth Gate</b>)
I *think* the first DVD I ever saw was Predator, on a friend's system in college in the spring of '99. I'm only mostly sure that was a DVD though; there were a lot of margaritas involved. He was the first person I knew to have a player, I'm pretty certain that was the point of us watching a movie. To this day, all I remember about Predator is that it was VERY green.
On my own player, Varsity Blues. :) I'm proud to admit that not being able to buy the VHS the day it was released finally pushed me to make the switch. The rest is history... |
Mine was The Music Man. Followed by the Matrix.
The Fifth Element. It was like seeing God.
I bought my player in June 1999 so that I could own the Alien Legacy box set, and the player came with a copy of Event Horizon for free. So that was actually the first DVD I ever watched, followed by the Alien movies. Once I saw the visual quality on Aliens, I was hooked.
The first DVD I ever saw playing was Space Jam. It was the official DVD demo disc at the local Wal-Mart. The handful of other DVD releases were all literally bolted to the display.
The first DVD I purchased was The Nightmare Before Christmas/James and the Giant Peach 2-pack. I bought them before I even owned a DVD player. |
Criterion Robocop. Had the dvd quite a while before I even got my first player but it was my first dvd experience when I finally got a deck.
Natural Born Killers was second. |
Tomorrow Never Dies...the original all SILVER special edition. My very first DVD from December 1998.
Star Wars Episode 1-The Phantom Menace
I don't remember for certain, but I think it was either Halloween or The Terminator. I bought a handful of DVD's when they first came out in 1997 before I even had a player. I was working at Tower Records while I was in college and decided to buy some with my 30% employee discount since I figured I'd probably buy a player over the X-Mas break. Well that never happened, so I sat on a pile of DVD's for over a year before I finally ended up buying a player in 1999. I'm almost certain it was one of those two movies that I threw in there when I fired that baby up for the first time.

First one I saw was Jumanji back at the Sony Store in Chicago in '97 (which i thought looked terrible, far too noisy, on the $1000 player). The first one I played in my Creative DxR2 dvd rom drive with tv output card was Wild America, which was terrible. At the time, Best Buy had like 2 racks of dvds and that was it. They were at the front of the store.
I'm quite sure that the first DVD I watched was Blade. My brother let me borrow it along with his player. The first DVD that I bought and watched on my own player was End of Days. I still have it too, 500 DVD's later.

First DVD I actually watched (as in witnessed) was Twister back in 1997.
First DVD I watched (as in bought and watched at home) was The Matrix in 1999. |

"A Soldier's Story" in my film class in high school. Fine underrated film.
My first two dvd purchases (purchased at the same time I got my first player) were the first releases of Barry Lyndon and Raging Bull. I am not 100% sure, but I think I watched Barry Lyndon first. I had never seen one before buying my own.

I bought a new computer with a DVD-ROM in the early Spring of '99. First flick I ever bought/watched was Carpenter's The Thing, paid full price ($22.99) at Circuit City. I was amazed at the extras (awesome documentary) and clarity of the picture. I was hooked like a ho on crack.
I bought a Toshiba 3109 soon after that....and still have it. |
