Face/Off was my first DVD I ever saw. It was also my first DVD I bought. This was way back in October 1997. Got a DVD player for my birthday.

I purchased my first player (a Tosh), at Sears in November 1998. It came with a mail-in offer for 5 free DVDs and coupons for 2 free DVDs at Suncoast. (Before you think I got a bargain, the player cost almost $400.00 and wasn't even progressive scan!)

Anywhoo, I used the Suncoast coupons to acquire Star Trek: First Contact and T2. My family and I viewed those back-to-back that very night on my 55" Pioneer Elite 16:10.7 system. (These old Pioneer Elite's were really optimized for the viewing of widescreen LD.) My audio back in those days was just analog Pro-Logic. And I'm sure that the Tosh's poor anamorphic downconversion in combination with the Pioneer's default 4:3 to 16:10.7 stretch mode introduced a ton of video artifacts. Still ... Our jaws collectively dropped to the floor at how incredibly close we were now able to get to the theatrical experience at home. From that moment on we've been hooked on DVD. In retrospect the format has probably provided the most entertainment "bang-for-the-buck" in the history of human civilization!!

I waited for the player prices to drop since I was in college and broke. In the summer of 2000 I bought my first player, a Toshiba SD-1200 for just under $200. The first disc I bought to watch on my new player was Sleepy Hollow. I watched it on a 19" RCA TV.

I registered on these forums in August 2000 and was hooked.

I believe the first DVD I ever watched was Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels. It actually arrived before the DVD player did, so I ended up watching it on a computer. Matrix was #2

Summer of 1998, I bought a computer with a DVD-ROM and watched The Usual Suspects.

To this day, I still do not own and have never owned a stand-alone DVD player.

Army of Darkness on a old RCA player I payed $300 for which would now be worth about $25 new.

I owned I believe 4 dvd's before I bought an actual dvd player, and watched them on my computer. The first one I think was John Carpenter's Vampires, I also bought Dead Presidents, Rush hour and one other. I bought my first stand alone dvd player the week 6th sense came out and I bought that movie along with my dvd player. Sony dvd player, cost me $300 at the time, came with 5 free movies, The Mask, Get shorty, Fools Rush in, The Jackal and one other(I've never watched any of those free movies, tried watching jackal and get shorty but lost interest, I have 0 interest in the other 2). Sixth sense came out in 99 or 2000. Ive accumulated 550+ dvd's since. Id say my average price per dvd has been about $10($7-8 nowadays). Double dipped probably less than 10 times. Thanks to this site, Ive probably spent $3000 more than I would have but probably saved about $3000 in the process. Also thanks to this site, I used to just buy the cheapest version of the movie, now I buy the version with the best special features even though I've only watched probably the extras on 5-10 movies. Im like a dvd whore and corrupted by industry. Im more interested in building a massive library, even though I dont really showoff my collection to anyone, Im more about enjoying them myself with my girlfriend and future children. Id say about 95% of the movies I buy are blind buys, based on reviews or actors/directors that I personally enjoy. I currently own about 100-150 movies I havent even watched yet. I buy them faster than I watch them. I was a broke kid/teenager for most of the VHS era, and probably only accumulated 10-20 movies in a decade's time(not counting porn). I dont really see me upgrading to HD-DVD at this point, Im fine with dvd and dont really need to see the caliber of the bullet flying out of that gun or count the blades of grass. There you go, more than you asked for and my complete dvd biography.

HTPCs have better picture quality when compared to regular set top player and display. Anything that is better than HTPCs costs an extra $500 or more.

I too watch my DVDs on my PCs (although I only have a small CRT monitor, the picture quality simply better than any regular TV out there), and probably I won't switch until the price of HD ready display going down, really really down.

Back to the original topics, the first DVD I watch is my own The Silence of the Lambs which is also my first DVD.

Before DVD was available commercially, Disneyworld had a demonstration in the "world of tomorrow". They were showing Twister. The first I ever watched after getting my own player was US Marshals

The first one was Rainman. On my computer with DVD drive. Ah the beginnings..........

I think it was Point Break.

Living in the UK at the time I went to some outlet and got my DVD player (Samsung) on a payment plan because I wanted one so bad. The first DVD that I bought and watched was 'Scream', so I think tyhat was probably in late '98.

Then I moved to the US and introduced my (now) wife to the wonders of DVD and picked up a Sony from KMart along with 'Three Kings' and 'Fast Times At Ridegemont High'.

The Lost in Space movie was the first I purchased and watched.

I rented Lara Croft tomb raider and watched it on my ps2.

Can't quite remember if it was Ronin or Blade... But it was one of those...

I'm pretty sure it was the matrix...got it for my 15th birthday I believe I didnt step into the dvd world till about 2001-2002

We purchased our first player in July of '99, Murder at 1600 was included, so that was our 'first'. The first I purchased to view was, The Sands of Iwo Jima, I believe she purchased, Godzilla '98.
